Seriously, this is way out in left field, but I had this idea because I like to take long "bathroom breaks" at work and **** around on my phone.

What if FFXIV has some sort of mobile component? I know not everyone has a phone capable of this sort of thing, but I'd wager that at least 70% of FFXIV players will have a smart phone (Android, iPhone, Palm, BlackBerry, etc) and there could be some simple tie-in game that allowed you to, I dunno, earn a few gil, or maybe some other little item, while away from the game.

Sure, it's totally obsessive, and the fact that I want to be playing the game even when I'm not playing the game is a little concerning. But I think this would be cool!

Good idea but still very far off for an MMO.

It would require so much dev and the amount people would use it would be incredibly limited.

In the future perhaps i could see some games doing this for things like auction housing items.

you base this on what ?

also, i dont think this would really work. they all are running different operating systems and it would be just too much to make this work. I think its also quite bott'able.

sorry, cool idea but unrealistic.

I was thinking sort of like a Puzzle Quest style game, or maybe even tetra-master, but have a tie-in to the game. I'm not saying it has to be part of the MMO. Not like controlling your character or anything.

The 70% stat was totally just an assumption. Most people who play videogames at least have some affection for technology, and it's not to hard to get a smartphone these days.

If you guys think it's not feasible, what would it take to make it so?

Taking care of your chocobo, would be the awesomez.
Virtual pet thingamagiegger.

But it wont happen. Only thing I could see in a phone, or maybe not any phone, but iPhone, is a type of Vana-Clock app but for Eorzea, and probably not even made by SE.

Holy crap, I can't believe how pessimistic most of you are!!

This idea is both wild AND crazy, so maybe try and work past your normal boundaries and think about what COULD happen.

Being able to interact with your chocobo (assuming you can have your own chocobo) would be pretty cool. Auction house apps are nice, but I think they've spoken about an alternative method of exchanging goods, so who knows what would happen there.

I just sort of assumed the usual maps, timers, and other little things that are already there for FFXI (through third parties) would come about. But I want more!

They've done it for Eve Online, I don't see why FFXIV can't do it. But I doubt it will happen.

I don't see it as that far-fetched. SE has been working rather actively with iPhone development (they are very active with mobile development in Japan), so I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of FFXIV tie-in app. I don't think it would necessarily tie into the actual gameplay, but we'd maybe get some mini-games or at least a sort of Eorzea Clock. I'm not clamoring for an FFXIV app, but it would be cool to have, and SE has already set a precedent for mobile development.

Perhaps a chocobo minigame. You dig up items and you can use them in game.

actually, taking care of a chocobo pet, or a way to interact with friends/linkshell sounds like a good use with a smartphone.

it will never go further than that tho. i don't see us griding gil or getting items by playing minigames on a phone lol. that would be kinda ridiculous, now wouldn't it ?

anyway, i did hear that windows 7 mobile should be a great platform for phones to game on. i didnt look up the details, but if SE were planning something which includes the usage of a phone, we should prolly already know about it by now.

Being addicted to a game to such a degree that you feel compelled to check on your chocobo while at work is, imo, a very bad thing.

It's a game, it's not the stock market. I think they should focus their effort on making the actual gaming experience as good as possible.

I think it would be one thing to have apps available like map viewers or FFXIVAH lookup, etc...

But anything that actually interacted with the game (chocobo breeding, skill advancement, money making, etc) would be unfair to anyone who doesn't have such a device. And I'm not sure where you got that 70% figure from either.

I'm sure they could have something on PSP that you could plug into PS3 or PC when you get home.
I don't see how it's unfair to people that couldn't use it.....you could still do the same in game.

The Dev team talked about how phones are used with games in an earlier interview ( maybe about 2 months ago), but they didn't say or hint they were going to incorporate them into the game. Just that they see a trend in games on cell phones.

lol i remember that on the FFVIII on the pc, a little black and white choco game where you battled enemies in the square map and found little bags of items you could use ingame, oh the memories

isn't that usually why companies do stuff like what the OP is saying though, its opening a market for the smartphones etc, plus selling the app too? i'm pretty sure thats how we come to have most of the stuff we have today. IE who bought a PS3 soley because FFXIV was meant to be a PS3 exclusive (unsure if 360 and SE have resolved their issues) i mean prior to that when it was announced over the net and on the Ps3 store. back to the point someone basically spent top dollar on something they didn't give a thought about before they heared that news.

but i do agree an outside app to the game would probbably be a bit too much, ffxiv people would probbably end up loosing their jobs because their talking the MMO around with them

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

OS makes very little difference these days... they all have web browsers.

I couldn't see them doing anything with 3D-accelerated graphics anytime soon* but if I could have pulled out my phone and gotten a list of my AH inventory along with mine and my mules inventories and played the AH or even something basic like crafting making money could have been much easier and I wouldn't have felt like I had to sit in front of the to get things done.

*FYI: Microsoft has demonstrated that they can seamlessly play a game on the windows 7 phone, switch to play it on the 360, and then pick it up on the PC.

I think this would be a bit challenging to create for an MMO right now anyway. Also, I don't want them developing and worring about small mini-games when they should be worrying about finishing the final product!

While the idea is nice and certainly at some points it can be implented in the game you need to keep some things in mind.

There is a reason why you shut down that pc, simply because you go to work, school or do other stuff.
You need to focus on those things cause if you think about the game all the time you will do other parts in your private life wrong.

I know that there are certain rules where companies must make people clear that the game isn't everything and that they need some time away from the game to relax so they don't get to addicted (can remember multiple posts in the first years of WoW were people lost their jobs cause they rather play then go to work and had the attitude as long as i can pay my bills, internet and monthly payment of WoW i have a good life.

So in short words i don't see this happen as you can't walk with the game all day long, would people even go to bed on time if they know they can still do all kind of things in the game on their mobile?
Doesn't seem right.

I'd wager against that. I know a lot of people who don't even have the add-ons because they couldn't afford the $15, let alone an iPhone.

I think an FFXIV mini game similar to Tetra Master for mobile devices is a great idea. It could be accomplished with a moderate amount of work and set up to be accessible by players in game and at work.

/grin

The only fear I would have is becoming too submerged in XIV at that point. The number of unhealthy addictions would be sure to rise.

Can you not use something along the lines of Logmein to access your home PC remotely and use any web browser to control your desktop?

If they were incorporate remote play for the PS3 version allowing for the system to be controlled via the PSP/PSP Go would be pretty interesting.

Hah, reminded me of the memory cards on Dreamcast, the ones with playable mini-games with rewards to transfer to the real games. It's a cool thought, so I'm feeling it. I dont have a high tech phone however :P. Mine can take clear pics real good however! XD If theres any alternate way to make gil, Im afraid its gonna be buying it -.-.

Mwahahahahahaha, triple triad multiplayer based on mobile phone and PSP wifi.

XD I've been thinking they should bring triple triad back for years now.

Also, have each region have it's own rules, and rules can change when someone from one region plays another :D

Cards initially gained through different achievements in game, like leveling or certain main arch quests or important side arch multiquest completion.

If you're interested, I just put a very early version of an Eorzea clock on the android market.

I don't have access to the beta (/cry), so I can't guarantee its accuracy until September (not to mention I can't guarantee that Square won't change everything between now and release, but that's a different story).

Anyway, if you want to check it out with your android, look it up on the market. It's just called Eorzea Clock because I'm an unimaginative *******.

Welcome to 2010? You can buy a cell phone for cheaper than what you'll be paying for the DVDs of this game. Or you can get one for free with certain service plans.

I wouldn't mind something as simple as a web-based login that allows you to do minor things, such as access the auction house, check plants (if they have gardening, I haven't read up on it yet), etc.

I think Zelduh has a pretty good idea of the real cost of a smartphone.

http://www.billshrink.com/blog/3891/iphone-versus-palm-pre-versus-android/

This is squre enix I wouldn't hold my breath for a smartphone app. How long did it take for them to come up with a window version that was as good as the unofficial one.

If they have gardening the ability to check plants and send your house moogle (if they have that) simple commands for their care would be great. Since fertilizing and harvesting are time sensitive. **** it could be text based:

Select plant:
plant A: sprouting, 2d3h42m old
Plant B: empty
Plant C: dead

choose option:
Plant
empty pot
fertilize
harvest

or triple triad/tetra master would be good too, earning gil for your SE account, you could just go to a gambling house in game to "pick up" your chips/gil. (and play there too! though as I understand it addictive games try not to add more addicting features like gambling to avoid bad press. except in Korea where the games are disguised gambling!)

OR just a chat program that tied into your linkshells and company would be fantastic. How cool would it be for Trillian to have a FFXIV linkshell plugin =P

A FFXIV PSP mini-************* would be fantastic! chocobo pet for the win! (it might sell some alone all nintendogs style without hte need for FFXIV tie-in) but if it were to export stuff to your FFXIV account it would have to be wifi play only, otherwise it might be too easy to "hack" the game with loaded save files then connect to your game.

There's an App for that!

I'm surprised nobody brought up WoW at all. They have a AH App, http://www.wowarmory.com/wow-remote.xml as well as an Armory Browseer http://www.wowarmory.com/iphone.xml.

I hope SE makes an app down the road for there new community linkshell thing. First things first though, let's just get the game out first then we can worry about Apps.

Your idea reminds me of some Pokémon merchandise I saw on a commercial. It was a "pokéball step-counter". With it, you can level your Pokémon and receive items by simply walking while wearing the step-counter. This gives Pokémon addicts a chance to play the game when they are forced to go to school, work, or even exercise. I think you have an interesting idea, but it will probably never really work.
