Has it been mentioned whether there will be voice acting for quests/cutscenes? Or maybe for our characters? I've looked around in interviews but haven't found any mention yet. Any official word yet? If not, opinions? It would be cool if we could choose a voice type as part of customizing our character. At the same time, the FFXI cutscenes had a certain charm with the voiceless moving mouths and text-accompaniment.

In my opinion, give our characters voices but if they can't get decent voice actors for all the inevitable cutscenes, it's better to let us use our imagination :P

I doubt we'll get voices. I doubt we'll even get lines, but who knows. Did we ever have lines in FFXI? I didn't get to see enough of the story unfortunately. I hope the rest is voiced, or at least the story parts are.

Ohh we'll get voices alright. The developers said so very early on, before GamesCom I believe it was. I'll let some one else pull up the interview but they said the game would indeed have voice acting, although it would only be used in certain important cut scenes and missions and such.

I meant I doubt OUR characters will get voices. I said I hope the rest is voiced, or at least the story stuff, which it sounds like it will be.

It'd be nice to have one-liners in emotes. Though that emote video from august may have squelched that hope. I doubt our characters will have voices in cutscenes but i hope we don't idly stand by either.

"Personally" I think "Our" characters shouldn't have voices. It should be kind of how link was. Now, stay with me on this, but when I was playing Aion for awhile from time to time my character would talk. It felt really weird, because I wasn't controlling what they were saying and it made me feel less "connected" to my character. When other NPC characters are talking to you and you don't start randomly running your mouth how you normally would never do, it feels kind of like they are actually conversing with you yourself and not some character you're controlling. You might feel like a deaf-mute but you feel more connected.

Id be pretty content with voices for at least the cutesenese. I mean this is FF its all about the epic cutesense. As for the day to day things. Going to shops. Quests ext ext. Id rather it remain pretty quite.

I think due to the threads you already started you have no opinion.

Also reading wasn't boring if you got into the story, just like reading a book. Perhaps if you learn to broaden your mind you will realise there is more beyond voice acting.

Voice acting needs to be done properly, WoW it was... sorta but it as annoying always hearing npc's say the same 4 emotes over and over and over and over and over and over...

I think I heard somewhere that certain main storylines will have voices, but sadly I don't remember where I heard/found it. I wish our characters and all npcs had voices, but that would more then likely delay the game. I definitely would rather have less voice acting and a finished FFXIV sooner! Oh how I wish they already had voices implemented to give an even more exciting adventure, but I'll be happy enough with SE's usually fantastic storylines if I have to read it or listen to it! :).

I did some digging and here is the original ZAM posting by Elmer lising the voice acting information.

"Another big chance for FFXIV is the addition of voice acting. Previously, it was reported that all cut-scenes would be fully voiced in English. However, Komoto says this is an over-statement of the facts and not every NPC in every cut-scene will be voiced. Important cut-scenes central to the story will have voice acting included. The idea is that if they want the player to be focusing more on the scene before them instead of reading subtitles, you can expect a voice-over track. Unfortunately for some, the voices are still planned to be recorded in English only. The reason is that they want to keep up a regular schedule of version updates, and having to translate and re-record all the scripts in multiple languages would cause too much of a delay."

It'll be interesting to have voiced cut-scenes, but I'm afraid that they'll end up having bad voice actors that listening to them speak is like nails on a chalkboard. That would suck majorly. I'd rather they not give every NPC and our characters voices, the novelty of it would wear off rather quickly IMO.

I'd actually rather there weren't any spoken lines. They're too easy to @#%^ up otherwise likable characters, and the entire time I played XI I never really wished for voiced lines. I highly doubt our characters or NPCs will be voiced, and I'm pretty sure SE stated in an interview that it will just be important story characters and cutscenes.

I'm with Kirb on this one, I'd rather there not be more voices than absolutely necessary. I like the subtitles over voices because it lets my mind create what a certain NPC sounds like. I sometimes worry about voice acting being wildly off from what feels right in my brain. For Example, Cid in 11, it would have totally ruined him for me if I saw him in a cut scene he opened his mouth to say some deeply important bit of dialogue and the voice of a blond surfer dude popped out. Voice acting just makes me nervous, particularely for a truly epic game that may take away years of my life. Listening to a horrible voice is a lot easier in a 40 hours of gameplay console RPG, but it can really get obnoxious on an NPC I'm gonna be chatting with for the next few years, lol. As long as they get good voices for the cutscenes I'll be ok, but I'm a fan of minimal voice acting in this kind of game.

Because we all know they'd give Cid a surfer voice. I mean come on. If you're going to make arguements like that, at least have them make a LITTLE sense.

I like voices, lets me focus on the scene rather than reading and it helps with immersion for me.

Aion had a nice amount of Voice acting and for sure I do not want player characters to be able to speak, it just feels awkward... normal NPCs that spoke when you start a conversation were a bit forgetable except when you spoke to a shugo.

What if our characters had voices, but just for battle? Like, outside of the grunts, our characters might say "take that!" every couple of hits or maybe a "thanks" when they're cured. Or for cool/cheesy factor, they voice the weaponskills in Legend of Dragoon fashion :P I dunno, it'd be cool if there were some words spoken in battle rather than just grunts. Then again, that could also make you feel like you're watching your character rather than feeling like you ARE the character.

I'm setting my tent up in the "I don't want my character talking in cut-scenes." camp. But voiced NPCs during the story scenes are fine.
