A much easier way to join the same server as a friend.

I'm not sure how it works in XI NOW, but when It was first released it REALLY sucked having to run through town to find a specific NPC and BUY (not real money, in game money), A code that could be used by I believe 2 or 3 different people when creating a character inorder to ensure they would be on the same server as yourself.

THAT SUCKED.

While I agree of course, buying a worldpass wasn't the only way to get the server you wanted.

You could just keep remaking your character. Not a much better option really, but it worked. But yeah, let us pick our own servers, SE.

Since your currently can pick your own servers, Im sure they will let people do it on FFXIV.

Do i forsee prearranged servers for many different pre formed groups? Yes...

Ill be staying away from those if I can help it.

Yeah, like I said. I wasn't sure how XI has it set up now.
Haven't played for 2 years?
Even then, I made my chars at release and that was alooooong time ago.
We didn't really get to "pick" your server back then.

I very much doubt they will let people select their server to start with, otherwise they will have very unbalanced server populations.

But I do hope that getting into the same server as a friend is much easier.

The rest of the world has found ways around this. In this day and age, not allowing players to choose a server is basically game suicide. It is a completely different gaming landscape than when FFXI launched. Stupid ideas formulated in Japanese boardrooms (I.e. Worldpass) is just not going to fly stateside.

A few examples of strategies that other games have employed recently:

  • Listing a "recommended" server for those with no preference
  • Creating a "help me choose a server" option that sways people towards a certain server
  • Offering short-term xp bonuses for joining low-pop servers
  • Offering free transfers from high to low pop servers

  • Obviously the specific strategy has to be tailored to the game and fit into the business model. However, a system that prevents, or puts substantial obstacles in the way of, two people who want to play together, will quickly equate to failure, putting a sour taste into people's mouths before they even enter the game world.
