I really hope they don't split up the guilds to the different cities like FFXI did. If all of your friends are starting in a certain city and you want to start with them, but your guild is in a different city... that would suck!
I hope there is a representation of all of the guilds in each of the starting city states.

Personally I hope not. I loved traveling from city to city in Vana'diel. Plus some of the guilds wouldn't make sense in certain citys / areas.

Really though getting from point A to B is going to be a lot easier and quicker in XIV, it's been stated millions of times. I wouldn't be suprised if traveling from city to city is easy as pushing a button.

they have already split the guilds up. for example, the Conjurer's Guild is in Gridania.

+1. It is a push of the button. the screenshots showing warp and teleport (where warp is your last Aetheryte chrystal and teleport is any that you have visited) verify this. There will be some sort of penalty for using this function in quick succession supposedly.

I'm fine with there being some sort of a "cooldown" between warps. It still beats having to make the run all the way from A to B and back again.
I'm sure that if the layout of cities is an large and interactive as XI, there will be things to do (IE crafting, mini-quests) that can help you "waste" time till your cooldown is done.

I don't believe the OP is referring to those kinds of guilds. In FFXI, for one, they did not exist though there were certain characters that started the quests to obtain certain advanced jobs so you might consider those a part of it.

Anyway, what the OP is referring to is crafting guilds where you would go to improve your craft level, take your test, and turn in items for the guild item of the day points. Oh, and buy limited stock of certain items the guild offered its crafters.

:::thinks about that for a minute:::
If you learn skills automatically, what do you need a class guild for?

Class quests? Perhaps they sell weapons/armor for your class? Maybe you can increase your standing with your guild(s) and get certain benefits for doing so.

But crafting is a full class in it's own right - like all the mages and melees. They all have guilds these days, as confirmed by the bits of flavour text all over the official website. I think the guild concept will take on a new meaning in 14. It will be a hub for the class. We know nothing of the economy at the moment, either, so maybe you'll find your guild is the place to really find good gear for your class?

I was under the impression that you do a lot of activity through guild leves, and that you obtain the guild leve from your specific guild. So if you are a Conjurer, you get your guild leve from the conjurer guild, if you are a miner, you get your guild leve from the miner's guild. If anyone can start as anything from anywhere, it would suck if you started as a Conjurer in Limsa Lominsa, but could only obtain guild leves from Gridania. And transportation is only as easy as a click of the button once you've already spent the time running from place to place. It seems its more like outpost warping. So classes shouldn't be forced to start in specific places, and you shouldn't have to be seperated from your friends OR your guild in the beginning.

As per Autumnfire's thoughts, it would probably make sense that every city had a guild outpost - but the main guilds would be spread through different cities. I expect each 'outpost' would have the Guildleves, but perhaps the main hubs would have more class-specific shops or NPCs. If there are going to be NPC related quests, most of the important ones might come from the main hub.

Wouldn't be surprised if there are main class quests to gain items/skills/etc from only the main hub. The outposts may send you to the main city to do these, a la WoW.

Well they said that teleport, allows you to warp to any crystal that you have touched at least once, and that there are crystals inside of the cities. This means going form one city to another is just a press of a button. The only thing to worry about is at what cost, but I'm sure it will be a slight price if anything.

The way I understand it is to teleport is completely free but there are limitations. The system was set up in a way that allowed casual players to use it several times in quick succession to do a few quests or something quickly but for those of us that will be spending 5+ hours in game we will have to be a lot more sparse with out teleportation usage. I'm sure this includes a cooldown, possibly some sort of teleportation sickness effect and likely an inability to teleport for a short while. This is good news though because if we could just constantly warp wherever we want we'd all be less likely to take in the amazing scenery that's going to be laid out in front of us.

I forgot what the event was but there was a time where, if your allegiance had won the event, you could tele from city to city via npc. Made life extremely wonderful for that short time. I wouldn't be surprised if there were warp tunnels from city to city. Or aetheryte in cities, but I do feel like aetheryte will me more of a regional/outpost thing.

Aw!
::smacks forehead:::
Why did I not make that connection?

I guess I was kind of operating under the assumption it was more centralized.
But that makes a heckuva lot more sense.
