I hope there is some sort of tutorial in the beginning of Xiv to get you off on your feet. I remember when I first started Xi 6yrs ago and being lost not knowing what the heck I was doing. I also understand that they added a tutorial to Xi within the past year for new players? I never seen it so don't kno how effective it was/is. Just be nice to know where to go to shop, hunt, or missions. But then again I kinda like looking back to those days and laugh at myself.

So what would you guys want, a tutorial or just run around like chickens with their heads cut off?

I prefer the latter and find things on my own, but I would be happy with just a magical marker NPC.

I think what excites me the most about this game is that I get to start at the same time as everyone else and learn and explore at the same time as my peers. When I started FFXI, the game had been out for years and I felt like all I did was try and catch up with everyone else. With FFXIV I will be able to find things out on my own without being bombarded with years of knowledge of how I /should/ be behaving. It will be a refreshing and exciting beginning for all of us.

However, knowing the train of thought of the industry I'm sure there will be NPCs to point you in the right direction should you ask. I'm sure SE is going to consider the learning curve of different players and put things in place to ensure no one feels completely confused and lost. They want people to play, not run away because they are overwhelmed.

Basically, I think the option for direction will probably be there, but should you choose to forgo this option, those of us who can't wait to figure things out on our own will get that chance.

Did I mention I'm silly-excited over this game and practically /crave/ to play it?

I like the idea of Tutorial; however, I wish there is als option to skip the Tutorial. I don't want to repeat Tutorial for my sub character.

I imagine between alpha, beta, and open beta info that gets released and/or leaked will give people enough of an idea of what's going on that a tutorial shouldn't be needed. I doubt the controls are going to be complicated enough to need one. Like all games, it'll just take a little getting used to. Part of the fun of FFXI for me was learning those ropes and as you pointed out, OP, laughing at yourself when you realized how silly you were to start.

I'd rather not have a tutorial, but at least a couple of starter "quests" (better than the FFXI ones) that send you running around your starting city a bit to get acquainted with things. Then I'm okay to run off like a chicken with my head cut off and see what I can find.

There should be a more defined start than XI. I remember my first time starting the game I didn't know that I needed to use the number pad to move. Everyone I asked for help was japanese and couldn't speak english...it took me about 30 minutes to figure this out and I felt like a dumbass when I finally got it down. Players should have a small, SKIP-ABLE, tutorial to begin the game.

I hope the controls be a little similar to Xi, but if not I'm fine with trying something new. Gotten so used to Xi controls whenever I try another MMO I usually end up configuring it similar to Xi. Just mainly numeric pad for movement and camera change. Thing I look forward to most is going into the unknown, but not as much as Xi was. I mean when I started it just seemed I fell out of sky and bam here's an adventurer coupon, good luck! Everything else I've played at least gave a little direction.

I remember when leaving San d'Oria for the first time teaming up with someone going to Ghelsba after gaining a few levels, I kept /logout and moving to cancel just to rest. Ya dumb, but other person when I first went to rest thought I was logging out. So was kinda clueless. What I'm really looking forward to is teaming up with a small group for first time going to X-fight and getting our butts handed down to us not expecting a fight. Fun times! :D

I gotta agree. I think the option should be there, but not be mandatory. I like the idea of NPC's in cities that can guide you through the next steps. Maybe like an adventurer guild that is for new adventureres to go for basic questions, I know at the beginning of XI there might have been something like that. I like not knowing. I actually believe my excitement for this game is gonna take away some of the "newness" when it comes out. I'm going to feel like I know so much about it already. And since I like not knowing, I'm between a rock and a hard place But, dangit, I cant wait!
