Is there any word out at the moment in regards to the English version of the game allowing any level of Japanese language input? If so, I'm incredibly relieved I won't have to suffer with romaji input being the best I can do. On the other hand, if this is not the case, as I will not be in the alpha or beta, may I humbly request anyone who plans to be a part of it to note this to SE as it will be far easier implementing it on an early level rather than at a much later stage?

No need to break the NDA if you're in the alpha and respond with unreleased information. But if you're a part of it, instead of responding to this post, just take the small time to make this simple request directly to SE.

Thank you.

I hope so. It was such a pain going from NA version to to billing then JP to play. I hope they have JP language support for the English version, but.... I will get the JP version if not.

It would definately allow mixed nationality parties to work more effectively. This would also backup their decision of having the same servers for different countries.

Is this a good time to say "PS3 limitations"?

Why would PS3 limitations limit PC input?

I was being a bit of a smarta$$, but I don't think this would be as easy to implement on the PS3 as it is on a PC.

I'm not entirely a scholar in regards to Japanese. I don't believe I could fully understand the game were I to purchase the Japanese version. Additionally, I'd have to buy a Japanese PS3 or a mod chip, and, if FFXI was any indication, it will be quite a convoluted process to play a Japanese version of FFXIV in the U.S.

I simply figure it will be a good time to get back into it. I enjoyed using it during FFXI, but found using romaji limiting.

Well, the Japanese PS2 version of FFXI had perfectly normal Japanese input. I can't imagine a PS3 couldn't do it. Making it actually exist on the U.S. version is the only difficulty. It will exist to start out with on the Japanese PS3 version.

The PS3 is fully Unicode compliant and as such there is no need to worry about PS3 incompatibilities. Furthermore, the PS3 includes its own IME and supports Japanese input by default. The only reason players won't be able to input in Japanese is if SE intentionally attempts to lock it out during play of FFXIV. As for the PC version, since the PS3 version will be Unicode, I imagine the PC version will be as well; therefore, there will be no problem letting windows pass IME input into it as there was in the PC version of FFXI.

All versions of FFXI included the ATOK Japanese IME regardless of region; however, due to licensing costs, JustSystems forced them to either lock it out entirely for non-Japanese locales, or give them a percentage of the profit in non-Japanese regions.

Put simply, it is obvious that SE made a business decision by locking out the IME in those regions instead of removing it entirely from the game as that would have been more trouble than it was worth when the reason was simply to prevent them from incurring licensing fees to be paid to JustSystems for American and European clients to input Japanese (that they in 99% of the cases, did not require).
