What will your name be?Follow

Well, I figured I would make a new one of these as I tried searching for one and I didn't want to resurrect any posts from nearly a year ago.

So, with us being able to have a first and last name now, instead of only one, what will your name be?

Me personally, I'm not sure what my last name will be, but most likely the first will be Sroly, as that is what I've been using for a few years now. I might try and come up with a completely new one for FFXIV though.

How about all of you?

PS: Sorry if I missed anything, just made an account here, figured I would join up and post rather than just read everything!

People might not want to share the names they want in case people out there act like ***** and register the names first so people can't have them.

Something original like Cloud Strife, Legolas Greenleaf or Darth Vader. Maybe put some xXx's around them for added effect.

I'm planning on having two characters, female and male. One will be an archer who sidelines as a tanner perhaps, and the other a mage type maybe.

As for names I've got a few ideas. Last names more than likely Murcatto (three cookies for anyone who gets that), as for the first I'm thinking either something like Monza/Monzcarro or Articuno/Moltres (depending on which I give blue and red hair Smiley: laugh).

I really can't wait to get my hands on the character creator.

I'm gonna use same name that I have been using; however, I haven't decided with my last name.
By the way, do NPC call us with last name or first name? or do they call us with full name every time?

Name is alright. I'm more concern with choosing Birthday. Does Guardian Force get chosen with my birth
day automatically or do I choose one that I like?

I'm waiting to see if there are any naming conventions used. Like how Tarutaru female had names with a vowel at the end (Shantotto) and males had hyphenated names (Koru-Moru).

My name on FFXI was Drofrehter. I decided to go with Dro Frehter or Drof Rehter. Not the most original I know but dammit, it's what I decided on.

I never got my character married in FFXI, and that was something I have always wanted to do in the game. So I wonder if we will be able to change last names when our characters get married (assuming that marriage is an option in FFXIV).

I will probably come up with a new name for FFXIV, something that I have never used in an MMO before.

Name sniping was a problem in FFXI during the server merge, and it will be a problem with FF14 if we all put our names out there for other people to hijack.

Don't bother.

Haven't seen if it was said or not, but I really hope they'll give you the option to not have a surname.

I can't decide if I want to continue with my current character's name "Domfrancisco" which would translate easily into "Dom Francisco"

Or go with something new to me, maybe something like "Diabolical Humor" or "Surly Disposition"

I wonder how last names are going to be accepted by the player community at large. Obviously there is a difference between humor depending on which side of the globe or ocean you find yourself on. Names like "Marty McFly" may be worth a chuckle here and be considered stupid elsewhere. Similarly someone may think "Rowan Atkinson" is an amazing and clever name while other completely fail to see any humor in it at all.

Personally I'd rather names like that as opposed to names such as Mike Ox, Seymour Butts, or things of that nature.

In all fairness, I'd really like to see originality shine from the player base. My group of friends are coming up with names (or recycling a few they used in FFXI) and considering what a good last name would be to tie us all together.

How is it unacceptable? Instead of there only being one guy named "Steve", there can now be dozens of them with different last names. I see that as a positive change.

I'm all for OPTIONAL surnames, but forcing people to have them is beyond stupid. The whole surname idea is very Japanese in nature and I completely support the inclusion, but personally, I do not want to use a surname nor should I be forced to have one. How would people feel if they were forced to include two surnames like they do in Spanish-speaking cultures? I just don't really see any plausible reason for making them mandatory.

How is it a Japanese idea? I'm pretty sure that you have a last name, same as most of the people on the planet.

And I gave you a plausible reason: forced last names will mean that people can have the same first name OR the same last name as another character, but not both. I'm surprised it's taken this long for an MMO to actually include it as a feature.

News flash: It doesn't take REQUIRING last names to be able to use the same first name as someone else. It should be optional. You have given NO plausible reasoning against this idea. The reason I am saying it's addition is a Japanese idea is because the option was created with the thought in mind that in the Japanese community they often call each other by their last names unless they are informally acquainted, therefore it makes sense from an educated standpoint to allow Japanese players to have both of their names available. We are talking about a group of people who slap you for /checking them because it's rude. And I don't see why everyone is freaking out just because I don't want to have to use a last name, it's not like I'm rambling on about what idiots you're all going to look like when you have the same name as 500 other players on the server but HEY at least your last name is different! I am perfectly fine with you all having your last names so you can be Cloud Strife deviations but I shouldn't be forced to have one. If the name I have in mind was taken I'd rather have to come up with a whole new name than have a somewhat clone running around.

You're right, it doesn't. SE could do what Cryptic did for their games and show your account name to everybody instead. So let's see: expose my account name to hackers, or choose a last name. HMMMM...

You're sure that's why they added the last name feature? Because I'm pretty sure a more plausible reason is "Most people have last names" than some ******** social convention. A social convention that sees a fair amount of use worldwide, I might add.

From a technical standpoint, it'd work the same, so maybe. Of course, depending on how the mail system works, this could bring problems of it's own (i.e. When you need to send something to "Bluefirely", do you send it to the one that put it in the first name field or the last name field? Also, how do you tell the two apart?).

Why not Mr. Name, Mrs. Name, Name I, Name Jr., Name Name, Na Me., Name III, Name Blah, Name Bleghm, etc.
Requiring the surname seems odd, but hardly worthy of this much drama. I hope the surname is not required, but if it is I'll find a way to carry on somehow.

These are problems that come with adding surnames in general and making them optional doesn't make the problem worse.

And here is the real problem brought on by requiring surnames, so thank you for pointing it out. If surnames are required, that incorrectly assumes that the majority of people who play MMORPG's use proper names, which most of them do not. Most of us use aliases, like Batman, to portray our ingame persona. I personally don't plan on using my real name, and I'm sure as **** not going to use someone else's real name, so why should I have to come up with a two-name alias?

I don't mind those kinds of name so much as the names that are more a lame statement of purpose than something that you might consider to be a name. Oddball names that still seem like names, that's fine. Titles as names...maybe not so creative, but they don't really bother me. "Youmustdie" "Stonecoldkilla" "Stabbinu" etc...dumb. Really, really dumb.

For the record, it's not a "lack of creativity" for everyone who simply doesn't want to use a surname. I'm really sick of seeing that argument. I could easily come up with a "creative" name that fits SE's stupid restrictions as of right now, I just don't want to nor is there any reason why I should have to include a surname just because other people want to use one.

As it is, how do you think they will address the issue of addressing people for messages.
Assume I want to send a /tell to a character named Bat Man. How will it go?

/t bat man
/t "bat man"
/t man
/t bat

The first two would work if it is 100% two names but the last two wouldn't. The last two also would not work if two names were optional.

I'm thinking the only way that both two names and one name characters could exist would be if all names had to be enclosed in quotes. So again assume a character named Bat Man and one just named Batman.

/t "Bat Man"
/t "Batman"

Doesn't seem to hard to do on a technical side of things. Would slow down player communication a bit. I'm proficient enough at making a " but some players are not and some won't have a keyboard, but they would have larger issues than communication if that was the case.

I recall SE having recently said something about how it will be made easier to send messages to people on your friends list. I would assume this would be some form of auto-fill feature or something similar. I think it would be kind of a pain to have to type out two full names to send someone a simple message.

If you could make a linkey to that I would appreciate it. I remember something similar but I couldn't find anything before I posted. In it I believe they also mentioned why exactly they made two names instead of one. It was pretty plain and simple but I'm not willing to say unless I have some proof.

The auto-fill would definitely encourage people to add friends to their list if not just for saved time. Although I kept my flist pretty exclusive in XI. Just don't like ppl watchin when im on ya kno

I looked, but I can't seem to find it right now. I don't remember where I saw it, and with so many conflicting sources of information right now (ie. information from legit sources that's fairly easy to find and not-so-legit sources that you see once and never see again) tracking down stuff like that is getting tricky.

Batman does have a last name, it's "Batman". His full name is "THE Batman"

noob
THE Batman

This argument is stupid, have a first and last name isn't any more unreasonable than not being able to have a name over 15 or under three characters or not being able to put numbers/symbols in your name. It's the social norm over in the vast majority of cultures and even most fictional characters. There is plenty of arbitrary numbers/titles/etc that you can stick in the second box if you're too stubborn, uncreative, or kainotophobic to come up with something original. Get over it.

Making them optional--that is, they don't count when determining your characters' unique identifier so the system knows who's getting mail and who's getting invited to party/guild/whatever--brings us back to the original problem of there only being one of a given name, even common ones that you'd expect would be everywhere in the setting. "John wasn't like the other kids. That's because he was the only one in the world named John. Nobody else ever thought of that name. Oddly enough, other kids had unique names, too. It was a very strange society."

You're assuming that the majority of aliases are all one-word. Even your alias isn't one word; it's two. Is it so difficult for you to enter "Blue Firefly" into the first and last name fields when you create your character? Though I suppose that's not going to be your character's name, or you wouldn't be making such a huge deal over this.

The stupidity in this thread is really just overwhelming. I honestly didn't realize it was possible to encounter such a high amount of ignorance in one thread. Quanta, you are obviously not understanding the way the /tell system could easily work while having surnames be optional. I'm not going to explain it to you because, like everything else I've said, it will go over your head. I also NEVER said I thought all aliases were one-word, I just want to use one and so do plenty of other people I know. Either way, I should be given that option.

Professor Shintasama, I'm sorry for not being as insanely nerdy as you to have known that about "The Batman." I never was one to read comics.

None of you have any reason as to why surnames SHOULDN'T be optional. You all spew the same ******** answer that people should just accept it and move on. If you can all ***** about your lack of male miqo'te and tele-taxi's (no offense) why is it an invalid argument to say surnames should be OPTIONAL? If you don't care, then just shut up and walk away from the argument instead of making yourself look utterly incompetent. Stop trying to make things more difficult for people who are asking for something very simple. I think surnames are stupid in an MMORPG. I'm not even required to have one irl if I don't want one so why the **** should it be forced upon me just because a bunch of idiots "don't see why it shouldn't be forced upon me?" Unless one of you can come up with a real reason why surnames shouldn't be optional, then stop wasting your breath.

Completely couldn't agree more.

I think that my post was worded wrong. Maybe "lack of creativity" was a bad way of saying it. I know I didn't want to say "lazyness" Maybe what I was looking for was just what Bluefirefly said. It's their way around something SE is doing that they want no part of.

This is a ROLE-PLAYING GAME. Batman doesn't have a last name! I shouldn't need one either!

Do you plan on running around town as the 'caped crusader'(Ta-da 2 names!)? Are you roleplaying as a vigilante? In FFXI we were 'adventurers', not wealthy businessmen that were focused on ridding the slums of gotham city of a new breed of criminals. Our action's aren't sparked by the gunning down of our parents on the street. I jest.

On a serious note: I'm going to have a hard time comming up with a name that fits into 2 spaces. I typically go by Phosphate, or Mictam, but I don't want to split Phos-phate up(I think its tacky), and it's difficult to find a last name that compliments Mictam as a first name. Maybe I'll come up with something completely new this time around.

Seriously though, I'm with you on that one, seeing as it'd be a non-issue if SE simply had it so that /check didn't write something to your log.

Apparently they weren't capable of navigating a simple menu system to turn these notifications off. It was possible.

Was a good book, but I liked the First Law ones better. Also, Cosca is the best character!

And you've given us no reason why they SHOULD be optional other than the desire to be able to use only one name, which is the terrible system that most MMORPGs have stuck with for over a decade. You can't explain how /tells and other **** should work in a system where first or last are optional because you have no ******* clue how they should work, or you would have made an attempt to explain it instead of writing it off as some "you wouldn't understand" *********

On that note, I'm going to take that approach. First and last are in and mandatory. I'd explain why that's the case at the database level, but you wouldn't understand. Because you haven't understood so far.

Sure...much, MUCH later. It should never have been in the system to begin with is what I'm getting at.

You're a ******* idiot. That's a perfectly legitimate reason as to why they should be optional. I already agreed people should be allowed to use surnames, which is why I'm confused as to why that stick is still lodged so far up your ***. It's not doing anyone any harm to let people have one name, without a surname. You your idiotic self even came up with a /tell system that would work perfectly fine with the quotes. Delivery system: just enter in the entire person's name. Really not that ******* hard, people. You whined about surnames so they gave them to you and now you're going to complain that they're "too much work" to use in a /tell delivery system? You really have nothing better to do than come up with stupid arguments to post on ZAM? Come on, Quanta, there must be more to life than that.
