When I was playing FFXI voice chat was really uncommon in MMOs, but now it seems like every game has it. I wonder if FFXIV will have a voice chat client or if people currently playing FFXI are using voice chat?

While I can't imagine raiding in a game like EQ2 without voice chat, I also have a hard time imagining FF with a voice component because I am used to thinking of that game without it.

The devs have said that they'd like to have integrated voice chat but they're not sure if they can pull it off.

When I put in "voice chat" nothing comes up but a wiki for IRC. All I know about from FFXIV is from the official site, and I didn't notice any mention of voice chat. Sorry if I am a noob, but I don't know where I would be getting that information.

Edit: I see it now "forum search". Apparently it's not all that obvious! Anyway I am not a premium member, so it won't work for me. I was one here for years but recently let it lapse. I'll fix that. : P

This is a very comprehensive listing of all of the various interviews and press releases SE has done since the game was announced. Lots of delicious information there.

I feel the need to repeat a point so it is clear, that argument doesn't work on ZAM forums, as searching is premium only.

I'd rather have someone ask a general question that is easy to answer than have someone argue for three pages about a question that has already been answered and then have them expect someone else to do their homework for them and provide a link to prove them wrong.

If you're going to hate on people for not knowing, hate on the ones who think they know...not the ones who are trying to find out.

The biggest problem with Skype/Vent is that they're PC only, meaning PS3 players won't have access to them easily. Integrated voice chat allows for cross platform usage.

Personally, I'm all for voice chat in FFXIV. Just as long as its for party/alliance/raid use only and the mute button is easy to find. ;)

I always played FFXI with two devices anyway. PS2 or desktop for the game and then a laptop for all the help I needed to look up on ZAM!

Now that we are on that subject I hope FFXIV has a browser window for surfing the internet while in game. (I am not done reading all of the info on what is planned for FFXIV... I'm still on August 2009 working my way to current events.)

Ok i'll be a little more direct for everyone.

1) go to www.google.com
2) type "site:ffxiv.zam.com voice chat"
3) Be amazed!!!!!

Yes yes yes RTFM, I get it. I didn't take the time to check google or this website before posting. I realize that can be annoying. Mostly I am just excited about the game coming out and I want to talk about it as much as possible. I had a thought about voice chat, wondered if things would be different, and then posted.

I get why that would be annoying, especially if you have been informed about the game for a long time now.

My kid comes up to me all the time, just trying to talk to me about something, like our camping trip this weekend. She has nothing new to say, and will ask me the same questions over and over, but she is just so excited, and wants to talk about it.

That's how I feel. I'm 35, and I should have better restraint but OH well. I learned about this expansion a few days ago. I'm geeked.

Anyway, I believe that these things happen for a reason (like your post that was not so tolerant of my apparently over stated comment). Thank you for inadvertently pointing out to me what a jerky parent I have been lately by being so impatient and short tempered with her excitement. Your post made me feel like CRAP, and I can see how that relates to how I have probably been making my kid feel. That's karma as I view it (I know the real definition doesn't work like that).

I'm going to go give my daughter a hug and answer 5 more times when we are leaving for the trip, but this time I am going to be nice about it.

the bluetooth on PS3 is soo convienient. It would be a shame if it were not utilized for audio

Edit: Maybe this is a bit ignorant, but if they can make seamless transitions between zones when over 3000ppl are playing then why can't they make an IRC client?

Also, anyone savvy enough to know how they made seamless transitions? Possibly pre-loading connecting zones to the one ur currently in, only placing pc's and npc's into the zone once you transition? I wonder if you can stand inside the entrance/exit to one zone and view battles/pc's/npc's/mobs in another. If so, could you stand at some vantage point in one zone and look into another and see aforementioned things

Just reading this made me feel remorseful about my blunt, unhelpful first post. My second sarcastic one was not directed towards you, but towards your team of lawyers (the other forum members coming to your defense lol). I did want to give an example about how it did answer all your questions, which is what I should have done in the first place.

Either way we can see that learning truly never ends. Hate that it happened this way but i'm glad we've both learned something (and it probably won't be the last time we need a reminder either ><). Hopefully no bad feelings zry :)

Aww yay! They made nice and are friends! (That probably sounds so much more sarcastic and jerkish than it's mean to be) I'm seriously happy that a potential flame war was averted by calm thinking well placed words. It's refreshing to see that on a forum.

Back to the topic. I would love to see an In-game chat utilized. Mostly (as other have said) for cross platform chat. I plan on playing on my PS3 as do a number of my friends, but I have a few friends who will be playing on PC, and then I have a few who will be waiting (and hoping) that it makes it's way to X-box 360. I'd like for us all to be able to chat.

On a semi-related side note:: I found an awesome set of headphones for my PS3 that I plan on buying. The Turtle Beach - Ear Force P21. I played FFXI late at night when my wife and kids were sleeping. I had to keep the game volume very low as to not wake them, if I had any type of chat going (I played on my 360) I couldn't hear the game's background music. This headset fixes that, it's getting great reviews and looks like it's the way I'll be going to continue my late night adventuring!

Voice chat is nice for socializing but I don't like the idea of using it full time to actually play XIV, like in a party scenario. I actually think it would be a lot easier to coordinate a group of people with text over chat, especially if you're talking 15 person partys like XIV is capable of.

I'm assuming you'd be able to do both. Voice is very convenient if you either need something done NOW or for when you need to give detailed instructions to people or one person. Text is a better option when you have something that needs to be known (so people can scroll up), even if the person is away for a bit, or on the phone.
