I haven't played the original Final Fantasy Online but I was wondering did anyone rp there or is anyone going to rp in XIV?

I'm contemplating playing a Roegadyn lancer, instead of the traditional berserker which I'm lead to believe the race has a lot of because of being sea fairers or pirates. The idea being he uses his spear and javelins like a harpoon etc.

I'm only a casual rper but I like being in theme guilds (or what ever they will be called in this game, seems every mmo has a new name for them now) so I was just wondering if rp happened in the previous game and whether there will be anything along the lines of what i'm looking for in the upcoming XIV.

My experience with FFXI (the current FF MMO) is that people are more likely to carry themselves into the game than they are to take on the role of a character. I noticed that, generally speaking, the line between where the person ends and the character begins for the FFXI community was different for the EQ2 and WoW communities.

For example, in EQ2 it was not unusual to have someone in your group intentionally speaking in an dwarven accent, or to have a high number of RP guilds dedicated to various themes within the game world. In FFXI, I found that more people took their character much more seriously and more personally, like an extension of themselves than people did in EQ2. Also I don't ever remember knowing anyone who was in an RP linkshell (guild) in FFXI.

I guess the best way to explain the differences I see would be like this. Playing EQ2 was like going to a costume party, but playing FFXI was like going to a party where people choose to dress funny because they were just that eccentric. haha : ) I don't know how to explain it.

Will I be roleplaying in FFXI? Definitely! But I plan to go from the angle of bringing as much of myself into the game as possible, and not on the notion of "pretending" to be a character. I hope that makes sense!

Yeah I understand :) Most of my rp consists of putting myself into the character rather than coming up with a totally new personae, I just like having the linkshell (:)) be themed rather than being a spontaneous mix of people although I can get by being in one. I'm just hoping a Roegadyn Lancer will be possible and actually useful.

I was a sackholder in an FFXI RP linkshell on what used to be the Garuda server. I'm also planning on being a Roegadyn Lancer, but that comes after I work on Fisherman and Culinarian.

I ran into one person on FFXI who was RPing while in an exp party. I didn't mind, I thought it was a nice break from the "ordinary" I do however remember some people being really annoyed with him. It was so bad at one point they sent me a /t saying they were going to disband the party and meet back up in an hour to get away from the guy. For the record, I didn't re-join them.

I thought it was pretty dumb that they would do that. Personally I'd rather have a person adding some imagination and creativity to the gaming experience than the truly annoying whiny know-it-all who won't stop telling you how to play YOUR job.

By the looks of things, Lancer is going to be a very popular job. I hope the field isn't TOO crowded..... Cause that's what I play to start as, albeit as an Elezen.

Due to the RP community being unorganized, they were scattered across servers in FFXI. Thus, it was difficult for anyone to really see much in that department. However, there is a movement that's gathering RPers together for FF14. You can find them here: www.ffxiv-roleplayers.com

Assuming SE does not designate a RP server (which they likely won't), this group will be determining an unofficial home for RPers. While there are some non-Rpers who disagree with this stance for whatever reason, it's something that the overall RP community feels is necessary nonetheless. Those who were actively involved in any FFXI RP linkshell would understand why this is considered a necessity.

Ah that's ok then, I know rping can be annoying if the groups you're in ain't rpers, I tend to not bother to RP then.

I went with lancer because a Roegadyn with a big sod off spear would look cool but I also thought it would give the impression of him hunting big beasts with a harpoon etc. Will have to see if it gets overcrowded though, I don't want to end up being in an over populated class like in other mmos I've played

Of course! I bet that's why I noticed it so much more in EQ2 and WoW. Both of those games have designated RP servers, and those were the servers I usually used for creating my characters in those games. I forgot that FFXI did not have designated RP servers. I really hope they have that for FFXIV.

This is a great idea, especially if there is no RP server planned for FFXIV!

even with previous games having RP servers, SE overlooked it and just thrust the RP community into random servers.
This said, i'm not expecting them to fix their past overlook (seeing as the communities for it in XI assimilated, or just created small intimate linkshells in which to play as they saw fit)

Though I'm not a RP'er in MMOs myself, i do enjoy my parties with those that RP. Even if the text based macros do become an annoyance after seeing "Nanny nanny boo boo" for provoke 80 times in a party.
Though I've noticed most RP'ers are more than happy to edit their macros to /echo if the party asks nicely.

@the person who's party disbanded because of it - your party should be ashamed, and i applaud you for not rejoining them.

EDIT: corrected some grammatical errors.

I saw dotted incidents of RP in XI here and there, and I did get into myself albeit outside of the game. I did a few RPs as my character on a different website I frequent and it was actually a lot of fun, but I've since lost interest in RP. However they did exist and I'm sure there are communities out there devoted to RP in XI that will likely carry over to XIV.

Also I never really got into WoW but I played a trial once and if I remember right weren't there entire servers dedicated to RP? If you're able to select your world in XIV I don't see why SE couldn't include such a world for people looking to RP full time. That might make for a very interesting enviroment as I suspect FF players would be more tuned to RPing than say your average WoW player.

I usually RP a nymphomaniac catgirl. Trying to copulate with every male and female character I see. Good Times.

One of the difficulties I've had with RPing in any MMO is a lack of background material to use to develop my character's backstory, or even personality. Most of the useful info is usually found within the game rather than on the website, and poorly documented by 3rd parties elsewhere.

As for that website, I'm gonna check it out.

P.S. Why do people use Flash for their whole website? You're supposed to be presenting information; do not make that any more difficult than it needs to be.

Well there is the cyber RP comunities too but those are best kept in a dark room. While I've paricipated I can't say I've ever gone that far :P, Being a Dark elf slaver in Vanguard was a blast though hehe.

More on topic though, I'm not holding my breath for an RP server but it sure would be nice.
Rp was pretty thin in XI, here's hopeing we can keep it better conected in XIV.

Hopefully I can find a good RP guild that doesn't mind "darker" characters if not one that encourages them. I don't mean the hero with a tragic past *sigh* I preffer the kinds of characters that might be responsable for someone elses tragic past hehe.

RPing is hard unless you actually seek out a group to RP with. Most people don't RP in XI and won't start RPing when they carry over to XIV. Since XI was heavily centered around pickup groups, and being around people who don't RP kind of kills the atmosphere, RPing eventually died off for the most part.

Hopefully XIV will be much more suitable for RPing.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.
