Wow! This game just looks freaking gorgeous!

Masks? That's pretty cool. (However with your name floating above your head it's not like you can rob a bank or anything lol)

The only thing that I'm disappointed about is that the alchemy guild is there. I didn't want to start there, but I do want to use alchemy. But that's a truly minor gripe.

Awesome screens Elmer, Thanks!

It's hard to say what with that being the only city available in the alpha (as I recall), but it could be that SE will be putting all guilds in all cities this time around.

Wow. I'm amazed at how FFXI those feel like. Yet, they also manage to update the graphics quality and bring a new feel to the game. Best of the old yet still new. Kudos to SE.

I sure hope this is true. It would make my first venture into crafting a lot less time consuming.

Seems as though they will be announcing another craft soon. I knew that they would have woodworking, but just to see it makes it more of a sure thing even though I'm leaning towards Alchemy still

that would be convenient, but since we're getting Warps and Teleports for a supposedly negligible amount of gil a charge, i think Square will leave the guilds scattered around. can someone imagine a Fisherman's Guild in a place like Ul'dah?

while I must admit that the game objects look great in terms of polygon count, I find these pictures and the world to look lack luster and bland. The environments texture mapping could be improved upon, particularly the surrounding rock, its just plain white... The detail on the character's armor and smaller objects looks great but large pieces of architecture and environment disappoint. I wouldn't think this would not have be an issue, perhaps it is just me, but I think it can be improved upon.

Awesome info Elmer, thanks!

Although... am I the only one wondering why the characters in these screenies have their names blocked out? Surely it must be breaking the NDA for this JP website to post these pics.
Not that I'm complaining, I couldn't give less of a **** about leaked info personally. Just find it kinda odd.

Those could be largely a function of either limitations on the alpha engine and/or the PC of the person taking the screenshots. The game is running at a restricted resolution for the alpha and it wouldn't surprise me to find out that the resolution wasn't the only graphical feature that was restricted.

Does look really good, but I hope that the cliff wall and water is due to either poor graphics on the takers end or alpha restrictions. Would be a real shame to have static water again.

Thank you for providing this information Elmer. It's much appreciated.

What concerns me though, is that as always, FFXIVCore is stealing your Translations again.

Discuss?

Yes Masks FTW. Looks like Vega!

At first I thought you meant alpha masks to cover up poor vertex based radiosity lighting hehe...
It would behoove SE to look into Lightmass effects found in the latest unreal engine tech to make some sharp but soft shadows on the cliffs and city walls.

The elezen in those pics is smoking hot.

I'm worried that despite how cool this gear looks, it will just be "fluffy" gear that hogs a spot that you will need to replace with an ugly brown hat with stats when you go do quests. I really hope FF14 has appearance slots like EQ2 had.

I hope that if they do take anything from Aion it stops right at the graphics. That game looks amazing, but I haven't heard anyone rave about what a great gaming experience it is. I know a couple of people that played through the beta and were very excited, until the game came out. 2-3 months into the game, they stopped playing.

I may be the minority here, but I'll take great game play and an in-depth experience over pretty backgrounds any day.... Of course, if you can have both, why not?

Aion fell down the same path as many other MMOs.
The first mistake was to copy WoW closely, thus destroying any chances of being competitive. Honestly, if I am going to play WoW I want to just play WoW instead... Aion could be a decent game otherwise, but the above is what killed it pretty much.

FFXIV is more likely to copy FFXI than it is to copy WoW... And honestly a "better" version of FFXI would sit rather well with me as apposed to a "better" version of WoW. :)

As much as I loved WoW I have to agree as well. That's one of the reasons whenever someone complains that FFXIV is just FFXI-2 I simply think...So what? If SE simply fixed the issues I had with FFXI, updated the graphics and created a new storyline I'd be perfectly fine. I wouldn't complain if they completely revised the franchise and created some great revolutionary game though...I usually don't expect that kind of thing from SE, though; they're creatures of habit over there.

To everyone commenting on poor textures etc etc etc:

This is the alpha. The game will change significantly between alpha and retail versions. Alphas and betas of other MMOs typically look much worse than what we see here, where there are placeholders and messed up textures all over the place.

So it's best not to nitpick the graphics at this point.

even though this is true, i've still parked my mind in a pessimistic mode so in the (perhaps rare?) event that these graphics don't noticeably improve by release, i'm prepared for it. anyway, the graphics already shown are enough to satisfy me. to put it simply, they rock FFXI's graphics and i'm not expecting another Crysis. good enough for me.

I hate to see so many people making harsh statements about a game that's still in it's alpha phase. I mean really we still have a good 7-8 months before the game even releases, games get MADE in that amount of time. I think it's safe to say with as gorgeous as some of the visuals we've already seen look we have some great things ahead of us in terms of graphical quality. I think it's safe to say XIV will be the best looking MMO to date, I'd expect no less from SE.

Cool, potions and ethers are at a reasonable price. That was one thing I never understood with ffxi, over-priced medicine from the vendors (thousands of gil for an ether, wha!!!???). Also awesome that they stack to 12. Also awesome that a character's inventory bag is at 80.

Is it me or does the lalafell in the brass circlet picture running a bazaar?

From the map picture, it looks like there's a chocobo stable. I was hoping for something for exploration. I wasn't too sure I was going to like teleport crystals.

This is shaping up to be a nice looking port town. I'm curious, that city shown in the tech demo I wonder which city that's going to be?

I think it was a concept that eventually splintered into the three citystates.

Limsa-Lominsa took the concept of a town perched on scaffolding above surrounding water, Grindania took the gothicsesque wire and glass buildings, and Ul-Dah took the dome-shaped structures.

as far as the lighting artifacts on the distant cliff faces I know exactly how I would go about fixing that. The noise is coming from the bump maps on the terrain. Id suggest normalizing the depth of the bump maps and making sure that they fade out on very long distance. Possibly around the same time most of the other textures begin to mipmap.

While the granular bumpmaps might look decent up close it seems to me like this engine is in need of some extra functionality to simplify textures as they mip down in general. bushes are very noisy too and its already quite hard to see monsters over the terrain.

It needs work but it can be fixed. Its possible to force better quality mip maps on any PC game too so its possible we can fix these things on our side.

edit: looking over it again you can see the problem also stems from high high texel density. Basicaly bad UVs on some surfaces where textures repeat too much causing a cheese greater effect. On some cliffs with more sparse texel density the bump maps actually enhances the cliff faces and forcing lower res mipmaps would actually lose fidelity in these cases.

Oh and the outside environments are very monochromatic.. that's not helping either..
