Sephiroth or any variation thereof.

Any name containing the letter "X" where "X" is not part of the actual name.

Any name that is butchered because it was already taken; especially since we will have the option for 2 names.

Rick James

C. Norris (abbreviated because the actual name is auto-converted to "Allakhazam" here...no idea why)

Any name containing "love"; especially if it is used in a way that is meant to be seductive.

Any name containing "kitty"; especially if said name is a miqo'te.

Any name containing "girl" or "gurl"

Any name associated with Star Wars or Star Trek.

Pop culture celebrity names.

This is a bit of a tricky question. I want to say "if the name comes from somewhere, instead of being created, it belongs on the list." (How can you tell if the player actually simply ripped the name or 'invented' a name that has already been used? After all, there are only so many names used in human history...)

I guess that means all Matrim Cauthons, Drizz'ts, Legolas and what have you belong on the stupid list.

Some people would go as far as adding that american players have no valid reason to take japanese names. I love anime, I love the japanese culture, I love the sound of their names, but I still kinda agree, to a point. Especially if said name comes straight from an anime, manga or whatever. (Ninja named Naruto, anyone?)

But if you keep creating rules like that, at some point, the only valid name will be GDferkosd PSERLSder, take or change a few letters. I mean, creating a character named Richard and he's playing a knight could refer to Richard Pendragon! On the flipside, Richard is a real name, that has existed for a while.

Now, since we can't really put a ban on most "real" names, where is the line? Matrim Cauthon is obviously a Wheel of Time character. A hyuran character called Raistlin Majere would really annoy me, but I think a Roedagyn Lancer called Raislin Majere would annoy me even more. (At least respect the theme of the character?)

Bottom line, I'll pick names that I can live with and that doesn't annoy me. It's most likely not going to come from any known fiction I've read, and I'm probably going to try to follow the world's naming conventions (length of names, the type of sounds, etc.) But if people around me decide to call themselves "Ibeatu Atpvp", well... I'll /facepalm and move on?

However, that being said, a lot of my best friends of XI were breaking the "stupid names" list rules. Japanese player calling his character after an American music band, American player calling his character after a DBZ character, etc. At the end of the day, the name doesn't do much. Hey, worst case, if a player calls himself Naruto, he might be interested to talk and meet all other Narutos in the game; share a common interest and whatever.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. People are going to name characters for all sorts of reasons/interests. That's great. I just wanted to highlight, for anyone not already aware and for the amusement of those who are, some of the names that have been and will be extremely overused to the point of /facepalming.

I don't mind it too much when people use names from characters in other games or movies. The only two that are really overused are Sephiroth and Legolas.

BG is another FFXI/FFXIV related website. The mod who banned me decided the thread was too stupid for their high standards.

BG used to be known as one of the premier FFXI fansites where someone could go to learn about and/or discuss some of the more detailed aspects of theorycrafting and other matters pertaining to endgame. Like all sites that start out with a group of players who find interest in the nitty-gritty of a game's mechanics, they eventually started to draw a lot of people who were of the impression that simply posting on BG made them cool. It was enough for them to simply be there posting, and little/no thought was given to the veracity or quality of the information they were providing. All too often the onslaught of would-be theorycrafters and coat-tail riding endgame enthusiasts has a tendency to dumb down the site and the original purpose and quality of the site suffers for it.

If I'm not mistaken, BG wasn't even originally a community site. It was a site for the endgame LS of the same name that gained popularity for some videos they made of certain FFXI encounters and it grew from there, but because it was originally an LS site they maintained it as a place for serious discussion of game mechanics. Over time, things changed, but the mods get to ride a much more subjective line in determining what is or is not a trash post.

There was a Leeroy Jenkins in the alpha. I weep for this game's name quality in the community.

In FFXI I was once in a party with three different variations of Cloud. They were all horribad DRKs. Guess what zone I was in too? Starts with a V ends with an S.

I have to admit stupid names don't bother me that much until the player starts acting stupid and then I become biased. I knew some great LS mates with names like LegolasX and Cloud(something)and even my name was kind of unoriginal. We poked fun at each other over the names but it actually was fun seeing something really stupid run by while parting or camping. When a player lives up to the stupid name then it becomes annoying.

Your analysis of BG is spot on as much as I know about them. They are free to ban whoever they want whenever and for whatever reason far as I know, why would it be any other way? My ban is just for a few days, however I will not be revisiting the site.

The message I received upon notification of the ban was an insult directed at not only me, but the entire ZAM community here. It reads:

"This is NOT allakhazam. We have brains here. Please find yours during your vacation."

Now, I am not easily offended, and I understand that it is the mods responsibility to keep the forums within the bounds of the community standards, no problem there. I just wonder if it is common practice for them to hurl insults such as this.

If you think that's bad, you should see the WoW version of BG.

BG could be loosely defined as an elitist site. That's their thing, and I'll commend you for acknowledging their right to operate as they see fit. I post here because I've been a member of the ZAM community for upwards of 6 years now and because MMOs are my favorite passtime. While I don't necessarily agree with the attitude of that particular mod in slamming ZAM as a whole, I can't say I disagree with their assessment on the quality of discussion to be found here a lot of the time. Everyone has their own reasons for visiting ZAM and they bring with them their own views, likes/dislikes, and general interpretation of what the site is for. ZAM is for more general discussion, and despite the influx of users with only the most mundane of contributions that BG has seen over the years, I see they're still making an effort to discourage the kind of verbal diarhea you might find elsewhere on the web.

Oh boy I stepped in it big time lol. Trekkies and Star Wars fans don't get me wrong, not trying to belittle your passion. I've always loved the original Star Wars, not so much Star Trek...but seriously, the first Jarjar Binks I see in FFXIV could possibly make my head explode, much to your delight perhaps!

If names are the least we have to worry about... i'm not concerned.. in fact without sound like a complete ***. This thread is basically "i think the game is fine, this is the most retarded and meaningless thing we have to worry about".

I'm more concerned with bot activity and gold spammers in town then i will ever be by someones name. Most of the mature people i end up playing with anyways are not using those names... usually just a mindset that follows with them. If by chance someone uses a star trek/star wars name... whatever. I used Willryker as my name for FFXI and i actually got a ton of LOL's out of it. I mean... i made it for fun and made him look like the character, after all... it is in the end just a meaningless game right?

If I saw someone named Jarjar Binks I would find anyway to MPK them like their namesake did to Star Wars.
