That really depends. No one has played this game (other than the alpha testers) yet. We don't know how overwhelming it will be. I can tell you that when I first picked up XI, it wasn't much of an overwhelming feeling as it was an excitement feeling. This is the feeling I'm hoping for when I first start playing it. I'm sure there will be a lot to do at first, but everyone starts at the same time. No rushing to try to catch up to the pack.

It isn't going to be like picking up XI as it is now. If you picked up XI now, then I certainly wouldn't be surprised if you were overwhelmed. There is so much content in that game -now-, if you were to start from scratch and "catch" up with everyone else then it would take you a long, long time.

If you have played an MMORPG before, then I don't think it matter whether that MMORPG was FFXI or some other game. There'll be plenty to learn, but that will be things we all need to learn.

If you have never played an MMORPG before, then it can be a lot to take in. Generally though, I think people who venture into the realm of MMORPGs for the first time generally end up having a fun experience. It's time that turns the players cold and cynical :).

They design these types of games so the average person will be able to grasp the concepts of the game. If you've played any other MMORPGs before, you'll have very few issues with learning how FFXIV works.

All RPGs are basically the same in that each is different in it's own way and usually takes a bit of getting used to. I don't recall being any more overwhelmed with my first MMO (FFXI) than with any other MMO after that. The only thing that might be overwhelming is the playerbase and whether or not they are jerks.

Use Kain's jump ability on bosses, he'll avoid being hit while in the air and it can save your entire party....

As for FFXIV, i think it will be a much more "User Friendly" MMO, maybe not quite the monkey button pushing that WoW or some of the other, newer MMO's play like, but no where near the complexity or time sink of FFXI.

When I started FFXI I didn't really have much experience with MMOs, but the most difficult thing I remember doing was trying to find my way around Windurst. SE did a great job making FFXI user friendly, and I hope they continue to do so in FFXIV.

Well I would say they did a good job making it more user friendly over the years, but when it was released in North America with Zilart it was horribly inefficient and hardly user friendly. Menus were and still are fairly cumbersome, massive timesinks which I don't mind as long as there is some incentive or efficiency (outpost warps come to mind as one of the best improvements), party mechanics back then and now -while somewhat driven by the player-base- made leveling some jobs downright non-existent, and not to mention the mob trains and mPking and the like and I'll refrain from mentioning solo-ability of the game at lvl 20 or higher.

That said, SE made huge strides in recent years to improve all of that stuff and I can't see SE falling back to the ways of 2003 MMORPG rules. I look back on FFXI as my first MMORPG with nothing but love, and that love allows me to see the horrible scars and rashes FFXI had back then. No need to endure that torture again when there is a better, more proven way of doing things.

XI was my first every MMO and i joined it at least a year and a half after it first came out...so i was a little behind but it's fine, SE look like they may have learnt from previous issues with XI in XIV but like said previously it really depends on the other players, i found a very helpful guild to guide me babystep like through my first months of XI. XIV looks like it will attract alot of XI players so i'm sure they'd love to help, though they'll be pretty much in the same boat as far as it all being new, bar those that get alpha/beta testing for XIV >.< lucky people.

I don't believe it will overwhelm anyone as long as they are patient with the learning curve. I remember when I first started FFXI - I was learning how to play different elements of the game for weeks, but none of it was overwhelming. For the most part everyone I met in the FFXI community was extremely helpful and willing to teach new players. FFXI was the best gaming experience of my life, and I have a feeling that FFXIV is going to be even better.

My advice is to be patient if you don't understand something about the game, and don't be afraid to ask people for help.
