Install Size?Follow

I have a pretty simple question for everyone. I know for sure I'll be playing on PS3. I plan on buying my PS3 next weekend, and can't decide if I should go for the 120gb drive, or the 250gb. Obviously nobody 'knows' what the install size will be. But I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction as far as what the install size might be.

I looked up a download for WoW and it recommended 6gb free space. Is that normal? Will 120gb give me enough room for the game, expansions, updates etc?

Edit: I don't plan to use it for anything except gaming. So no Netflix movies, or anything like that.

Thanks.

lol it should be enough space dude, dont worry i have a ps3 with 40 gb and i'm not worry about it cause i only used my system for blu-ray movies and some games but they dont take much space, plus when im done i delete them to make more room.

I'd guess 10-15 gigs including a few expansions.

Do netflix movies take up space? I just stream on my Xbox.

My WoW folder (with very light use of addons and two expansions) is 16.7gb. My LoTRO folder with two expansions and no addons is 12.7gb. Not sure what FFXI is up to these days. I would budget 20gb for FFXIV and I would expect it would be some time before you got close to that (if ever) but with even a 120gb drive, if you start getting close to having a full drive it's a pretty safe bet you could dump something somewhere to free up some space.

I think if I remember right, FFXI on my PS3 was 10-11gb so my guess is FFXIV will no more than 15-20gb.

Well, 120gb it is, and I'll drop the other $50 on a pre-order :)

Thanks again for all the info!

Great, its it only around 20GB then I guess its cool for me to just get the 40GB Intel SSD instead of the 80GB version.

Then again. We never know.

I just got my PS3 so I'm not sure (and it's at my house and I'm not so I can't check) but doesn't it have a removable hard drive like the 360? I have the 120, so I'm not concerned at all about free space. But for the people considering a smaller one I think that'd be good info to know. This way you could easily have a separate hard drive (if need be) for XIV. Like a HUGE memory card lol

I wouldn't buy a 40GB SSD. 60 or 80 would be about the lowest I would consider. Windows alone would easily eat half of that drive. I've got an 80GB drive with 30GB tied up in applications and 20GB left over. You would not be happy with a 40GB drive.

Maybe they're planning on dropping an SSD into a PS3. I'd still start with 80 GB, though.

Personally, i will wait till the PS3 version has some more details.

This is because i wonder if SE will include a HDD (hard drive) in the PS3 game package like they did with FFXI.

Many have their PS3 HDD filled with other stuff and SE might want to keep their MMO independently or in other words just a dedicated hard drive which always works best.

Also, regardless if a shared or dedicated HDD will be used, obviously a preparation of the HDD will be needed because the PS3 uses a FAT32 format and the game will be larger than 4GBs.
So a partition will have to be made and i doubt it will be a partial install meaning the rest of the game will be streamed from the disk.
I doubt the game details will state something like at least 1GB of space is mandatory to play the game.

I would just wait till theres more information on the HDD space requirements and if it comes with it's own HHD then that would be best.

SE shipped an HDD in the box with FFXI because the HDD wasn't a standard piece of equipment in North American PS2s and for at least some time, you still couldn't get an HDD for a PS2 without having to buy the full FFXI retail box. There is no such restriction with FFXIV and it is in no way in SE's best interest to jack the price on the PS3 retail box by shipping an HDD with it that most people aren't going to need.

Well i know that about the PS2 thing but there may be some restrictions on the amount of space some PS3 users have left.

Its really not a big deal but just im just speculating.

Also, i was hoping more to get a big box like the FFXI one instead of just a standard slim blu-ray box.
I plan on buying several to give as bday and xmas gifts this year and a big box just looks more exciting.

To my understanding FAT32 prevents any single file being over 4gigs. FFXIV will not install as an ISO (single file) on your PS3 HD. It will install as multiple files (thousands) ranging from a few KBs to tens of MBs. Expect FFXIV to install ~20-25 gigs total. You can't really compare WoW and FFXI and LoTRo since those are honsetly low def games. Take a look at HD games like AoC which installs ~24 gigs on a PC.

We are talking about HI-Res textures and scprited voice acting. All of which demand lots of HD space. In the future (years) with expansions and add ons. expect FFXIV to top out ~30-40 gigs total. (assets are borrowed from previous data to cut down on space)

SE won't ship a HD with the game simple because every PS3 sold came with at least a 20 gig HD. They can also state that a larger HD is required to play or that an upgrade maybe needed in the future to expand your hobby.

I would venture a guess that FFXIV will use far more textures than FFXI or WoW because of the more advance material system in the game. 20 gigs sounds like a safe bet easily. More if they are using voiced dialog to any extent...

Well, I was all amped up to go out and pick up my 120gb PS3 this weekend, but it looks like that won't be happening. Apparently the entire world has been out of stock for the last 2-3 months due to another one of Sony's **** shortages. Hopefully there's some more in stock by the time this comes out.

I'm also beginning to wonder if going PS3 for this game is even the right choice now. Didn't they completely drop all the updates for the PS2 FFXI version shortly after CoP?

1. Too early to know for sure if the PC skew will have advantages over the PS3
2. I believe that the PS2 was never fully left behind in FFXI even to this day.
3. The PS3 is a great deal more beefy than the ps2 citing that both the PC and the PS3 skews will take half a decade before we start seeing the PC version really jump ahead of the console in some significant way.
4. The game industry revolves around consoles now so it barely matters how great your PC is if the game wasn't made to use all that extra horse power.

Well, that's definitely helping to put my mind at ease.

Now if I could just find a PS3 in a store, things would be really looking up lol.
