How do you pronounce Eorzea?Follow

Like the title says, is anybody sure about the actual pronounciation of Eorzea? Or how do you pronounce it? It bugs me not knowing the right way to say it.

orz-ee (like sea instead of zea)
or-zay-a

Those are the only pronounciations that come into my head, if you pronounce it another way, I'd love to hear it. I try to make myself pronounce it like the second because I think it sounds better, but I find myself continually saying it the first way. I don't think that the E would be in any of the pronounciations, but maybe there's something lost in the way the japanese say it?

I can't help but think that the name is somehow related to the popularity of the "orz" usage that came about during FFXI... The connotation in my mind kinda ruins the name for me.

(small OT, I feel for your name Pikko, long time reader even though I'm not much of a poster, and I'm sure there's lots of non-posters who feel the same, and hopefully I didn't preemptively derail my own topic)

Edit: I didn't see the other pronounciation post >< bad me, feel free to condense it all over there and ignore this one ><

EE-yOR-ZehAH. "Eor" like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh; with a light "y" sound. "Zea" almost like "zah" but with a subtle "eh." It's probably wrong, but I like it.

This is how I've been pronouncing it as well. In fact, the Eeyore reference is exactly how I would have described it.

I'm sure you know but this is really just coincidence... not even, just kind of fishing for a connection. I'm pretty sure the term 'orz' dates before use in XI, and keep in japanese writing those letters don't even exist.

I like to notoriously pronounce things the completely wrong way, until i've heard the right way so much I either switch.... or just don't care anymore :D

SO i'm pronouncing it 'A- or- zah'. Kinda just rolls off the tongue, even if it's completely wrong!

It is a Japanese based emoticon of a man pounding his head on the floor.
The o is the head.
The r is the arms.
The z is the legs.
Used to symbolize the emotion of frustration
So, it isn't really a "term," just an expression. Kind of like our... /facepalm.

Back to the OP, I like the whole winnie-the-pooh pronunciation.

Edit: Forgot to actually comment on the OP's topic.

getting off topic (sorry) but since there was a followup, from wikipedia (the most reputable source in teh intranets!):
Quote:

It was first used in late 2002 at the forum on Techside, Japanese personal website. At the "Techside FAQ Forum" (TECHSIDE教えて君BBS(教えてBBS) ), a poster asked about a cable cover, typing "_| ̄|○" to show a cable and its cover. Others commented that it looked like a kneeling person, and the symbol became popular.

I keep it simple: A-or-zah. The "A" is the same way you say the letter itself.

I've always been that way with FF games. I just pronounce the weird names (so many of them throughout the series) however they first appear to me, regardless of whether that is correct or not. It's hard to change to the correct pronunciation after a while, but sometimes I do.

E as in hElp.

O as in hOliday.

RZ

E as in hElp.

A as in Ah.

Why must you English speaking folk always make everything so complicated? D:

We actually talked about this in another thread a long time ago.

Eorzea: エオルゼア (Katakana for eorzea e-エ 0-オ r (ru)-ル ze-ゼ a-ア)

Going by japanese phonics, it is pronounced AohruzAah E= eh o as in Oh ru as in rubert ze as in Zeh a as in ahh. Japanese don't use accents either, so you just sound it out like the accent is after the end of the word. There will be no accent on or or ze.

If you know the japanese sounds, then i hope you understand what i'm trying to say here. If you don't know japanese sounds, i still hope you can understand lol.

I hope this helps more than it confuses.

Edit: almost all japanese sounds make up a consonant and a vowel with very few exceptions. The only single letter sounds are the vowels a e i o u and N. The main exception here is "wo" which is usually pronounced as "o". Most othe sounds are like ka,ke,ki,ko,ku, ra,re,ri,ro,ru ... etc...

It's the latter. For us English speakers, it needs to be disected in a manner that facilitates its pronunciation. The way I am under the impression that Eorzea is pronounced is (E-your-Z-ah). I'm not sure if this is right, but the way I think it is pronounced should be easy enough for everyone to understand, and repeat.

To clear up Ten's post, by Japanese the characters the pronunciation is (I bolded the A's to show they are long vowels in this case):

A-O-Ru-Zay-Ah = Aorzayah because ru rolls off the tongue, practically silencing the u sound and condensing the world for English speakers because we don't separate our consonants as much as is called for in the Japanese language (kanji, hirigana and katakana are the characters that form the language in case anyone didn't already know).

Likewise.

As for someones reference to "Orz" I'm not sure what connotation you give it but it's the name of an alien race from Star Control 2, a game older than many current gamers, lol. When I hear or see the word "Orz" I hear strange broken Earthican speech in the back of my brain.

I find it most amusing that a person with 2010 in their name, necro's a post from 2010 ^.~

But, yes... the debate is over. They say the name in the video, and like it or not it's now the official pronunciation.

Yep, I will always say it like this... in my head.

I mean really, if I went around saying **** like Eeyore-zee-ah, my fiance might get more freaked out than she already is... so those thoughts are best kept to myself. Smiley: tongue

In the trailer they pronounce it 'a-or-z-ah'. A friend of mine, the one who actually turned me on to FF games in the first place, used to pronounce chocobo as '***-a-boo'. I still said 'cho-ko-bow' whenever I talked to him about FF and we never had any issues. I guess it doesn't much matter as long as the people you're talking to have an idea what you're talking about.
