No Summon/Pet class?Follow

One of the things I liked about FFXI were the pet classes. Especially Dragoon and Summoner. Yet, I haven't seen anything on the FFXIV site that states whether there will be ANY kind of pet class/profession. Does anyone have any info on whether it will even be implemented? I'd really hate not to be able to play a dragoon type class in XIV. The only classes I could even think of that would have SOME kind of summon/pet, where the mage classes. Yet, the description is very vague and doesn't offer info on this aspect.

Will there be no summon/pet class for XIV even though summons have been a staple of pretty much EVERY Final Fantasy game?

If I remember correctly, Devs have said the summons will play a different role in this game. They will be more 'godlike' creatures, rather than buddies for each player to call upon in time of need.

Aww darn! But what about pets overall? My little dragon pet wasn't a summon per se... will we not be allowed to have any kind of pet even if it isn't a summon like Bahamut/Ifrit? It'd be a shame to not have a little dragon pet in the new game :(

At the moment, the people with access to this information can't answer your question without violating the NDA.

On a completely unrelated note, who is your favorite character on Lost? Personally I like Jack Shepherd.

Having no insider info at all and being a fan of the Dragoon class from FFXI (and all the FFs before that had a Dragoon in them...) I was a little disappointed. But I figure that maybe down the line somewhere you may be able to "graduate" into a Dragon Knight class of some sort and our little winged friend will join us again.

Really? Do you think that's the direction of that certain character?

I was sitting here all along, thinking we were talking about the former fugitive Republican Senate candidate Jack Shepard. He was such a political animal, and I thought he was forgotten. I nearly had to hit myself in the head with a staff, at the fact that people remember him.

What this has to do with FFXIV, the world may never know .... or will they!?

You can. It's called Lancer.

I'd like to see cosmetic pets make it into the game even if they shy away from the regular pet-based classes. Not to start a game vs game flame war, but one of my favorite aspects of another popular mmo is that you can have companion pets like kittens and small dragons. It's just something cute to walk around with and doesn't serve any real purpose other than making you smile.

I like the idea of making summons more god like. In previous Final Fantasy's the summoner was usually one of a kind in the storyline. That made summons more special when you saw them, not to mention the cool summoning animations.

not really the same thing though when you consider that one of the main things that makes a Dragoon what he is in FFXI is actually the dragon pet/companion. Lancer on the other hand, does not (to my knowledge) have a pet dragon which is what attracted me to the Dragoon class in the first place, not the lance. (actually I'm more of fan of swords, not lances, but god forbid you try to play a DRG WITHOUT a lance >.< )

no love for bst? and why does everyone always forget puppetmaster as an xi pet class? imo, it was the truest pet class, in every sense of the word. it was extremely versatile, stemming from the fact that a pup had extensive control over the automaton. the customization was fun too. above all else, however, pup was a class that was always useful but never broken, unlike bst (sorry guys) which was limited to niche roles in group play (in particular endgame activities).

i really hope if they do add a pet class, which i think the game needs, it will incorporate some pup type aspects.

didnt SE say somewhere that each character was going to choose their "guardian" spirit or something at the char creation screen? the implication was that these were all summons that had some sort of effect on the character.

maybe im just remembering a dream as a news post, but i swear i read that somewhere. if they did anything, id imagine they wouldnt limit it to a specific class and theyd allow each char to summon their guardian spirit, as a form of 2hr ability. likewise, if they do add a specific summoner class, id imagine they would do as they did in ff12 and bring in a whole new slew of summons, instead of the "OG" summons everyone is used too. if they do that, i hope to fricking god that they include zeromus as one of them. not only was he my zodiac sign in 12, but as the pure embodiment of hate from 4, he has a soft spot in my heart.

You do realize that FFXI is the only Final Fantasy game where Dragoon/Lancer actually has a pet, right?

They did indicate that each character would select a guardian sign, IIRC, based off of one of the twelve gods of Eorzea. But to the best of my knowledge they haven't said what effect this will have. I highly doubt that they're the equivalent of summons, though. More likely they'll have some sort of passive bonus on stats/abilities. Most of the gods seem to lend themselves to certain stats/abilities...(one is for war/strength, another for building, another for intelligence, etc.)

Here's the Eorzepedia article: http://www.eorzeapedia.com/wiki/en/The_Twelve

This is very true, but I'm sure playing as a DRG in FFXI for however many years you did it spoiled us. I know it did me.
The only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head are Cid's limit break in VII where he calls on a dragon to do some damage and didn't the Dragoon in IX do something similiar?

I'd love if the dragon pets made a return, but I'm sure I'll learn to deal with it if they don't.

I've tryed all the pet classes in FFXI but to my surprise... dragoon became one of my favs... even though I strived to get smn first. When FFXI first came out they already had the expansion pack because of the amount of time it was already released in Japan. So Im guessing you will probably have to wait for the expansion to come out before the classes we all want get here
