In typical following Famitsu fashion, official site update.
http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/

City-states now all have descriptions.
The Limsa-Lominsa section in particular has been updated with points of interest.
World map + nice flavortext

Legalized gambling? I approve.

Someone want to give me the run down on the new info? (That site, while very pretty, is annoying with the high load times :/)

I'll try.

Ul'dah
- Mentions sport of gambling and fighting.
- Economy: Mentions mineral resources and Clothcrafting
- Deity: Nald'thal, twin aspects
- Defenders: ?
- Rulers: Syndicate (6 richest tradesmen)

Gridania
- Economy: Mentions Forestry, Agriculture, Carpentry and Leatherworking.
- Deity: Nophica, the matron.
- Defenders: Wood Wailers; Polearm
- Rulers: Seedseers ("young oracles who guide based on the will of the forest's elementals")

Limsa Lominsa
- Economy: Mentions Ship Building, Fishing, Blacksmithing, and Trade.
- Deity: Llymlaen; goddess of navigation
- Defenders: Knights of Barracuda; Guns
- Rulers: Admiral

- Hawker's Alley mentions adventurers having retainer-run stalls

- The Mizzenmast mentions Airships

- The Coral Tower mentions that it's the headquarters's for the knights of the Barracuda, a group of Gun-toters that defend the city. It mentions that the recruitment restrictions are now so lax it's "opened the facilities doors to almost anyone" to help with the recruitment of "skilled marksmen". Note that this is not under the 'landmark' section, this is under the 'guild' section, along with fishing, blacksmith, armorer, cooking, marauders, and the pub/newbie guild.

Ok, I just had to point this out because its SE making me happy with lore again.

If you go to the updated map section on the website and click "in one are twelve" the quote is from a character with the last name "Ironheart". This is the last name of the father and daughter who made the maps of FFXI. So..... just saying! :D

I like the that their migth be fighting. PVp maybe and gambling. Ul'dah reminds me of greece. I know that SE stated their will be no PVP at start and they might put it in later. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

This is what the map looks like for those of you who don't have flash where you are, or can't be bothered with the site.

It looks almost like a 'Here There Be Dragons' map.

Just read Elmer's post. Here there be an ***(me).

Anyone notice that under landmarks in the hawkers alley section there is a little blurb about adventures setting up retainer-run stalls. I think this may be SE way around the AH, by giving us our own stores! May-hap we will be able to customize our stores with name and signs and what not. All I know is I'm jumping in my boots at the prospect of crafting and running my own store. Also I think there should be a way that as you level up you should be able to expand your store to sell more items or get new shiny features that make people want to come to your store.

Zemzelette you beat me to the retainer-run stalls didn't realize you had put that info on, I guess I just got to excited when I saw that info on the site lol.

Sorry, Callipho. Edit (replied to the right person this time >.< )

After a quick overview, there are no new classes listed. All the classes where the information says Coming Soon has still not been updated either. Looks like they've just updated the CityState stuff at this time. Also, they didn't report it as an RSS feed update like they did the last few months before.

The description of the Octant in Limsa Lominsa makes it seem like NPCs will change depending on the time of day. I've never heard this mentioned before though, so is it just a kind of romantic lore they decided to add to the description, or are we going to see NPCs with bed times?

That would be cool if different times of day had different sorts of travelers running around and NPCs to interact with. Will shady NPCs stalk the streets at night??

If they do have this I hope that they have enough foresight to exclude the required NPCs from their nighttime/daytime absence (so NPCs that are required for guildleve's aren't asleep when you just want to progress).

I dunno, some required NPCs shifting from day to night might add a little more depth to things. Not seriously key ones of course, but a few here and there maybe...

I only say this because I hated waiting to complete quests. If I finish a quest and its 8pm game time but the NPC just went home I have to wait until they come back.

If it is a trivial NPC I am ok with them taking the night off, I might even encourage them to do so.

I was thinking I'd want to choose a place other than Limsa Lominsa to start, since it's getting so much press early on.. But with the Musketeers' Guild there, along with Fishing, it seems like an obvious choice. Plus, it's pretty, has a pub named the Drowning Wench, and when choosing between a port city, a desert city, and a forest city, I'm likely to favor the first.

Just worried about everyone starting there, too.

Yeah I'm having issues choosing a starter city as well.
I don't want to pick Limsa Lominsa because it seems like that's where the majority of people are going to want to start. But more than that, I picked Windy as my starter city in FFXI and it was teh city that was the most out of the way. Kinda how LL is this time around, I don't think I want to do that again. Plus it shares initials with Lex Luthor! On the other hand, I do like water. A lot.

Gridania reminds me of the feel of Windy. I was hoping for a change of scenery. But at this moment I think this is where I'm leaning.

and Ul'dah reminds me of Bastok. I just plain didn't like Bastok. Sorry everyone from there...

For me, at the moment there is no clear cut favorite. I may just see where the most people I know in RL are going to start from and pick that same city. Makes low level parties that much easier.

After the latest descriptions of Ul'dah I am almost certain on picking that one as my starter location. I really like the look of Limsa Lominsa now that it has proper lighting, but Ul'Dah actually really sounds unique for a MMORPG city. The whole city under a dome and walls and the backgrounds of the 6 merchant syndicates really make it seem engaging. Gridania's 'look' is going to need to wow me for me to decide to go there at this point. The background story for that area just screams old school dungeons and dragons/tolkien :( I have had enough of that stuff (even if I tend to like it) to last me a life time.

Not disagreeing with you on that, but if it's going to be gambling and fighting central for all.. I could see that getting annoying after awhile. I'd rather have the option to go there, rather than it (and all its participants) being in my backyard.

Not me, I WANT all that in my backyard. Why live in Duluth when you can live in Vegas?

I'm really disappointed that the guilds are spread out again. >< One downside is if you were going to try out different things, you have to travel back and forth between the different city states. The second downside is that now me and my real life friends are all going to have to start from different areas. That's no fun. :(

I'm hoping that moving from city to city will be an easy teleport or airship ride from the start, so things like the various guilds won't affect where you start.

As for me, I'm liking Gridania primarily because it looks centrally located on the map, plus it reminds me of Windurst. I have horrible memories of starting in windurst and having to run all the way to San'doria to meet up with my friends.
