I thought there would be an improvement, but wow. It's like looking at standard def vs high def TVs.

Why does the after picture look so dull?? </sarcasm>

I hope that second one is actual gameplay and not just a cutscene (there is no text above the npc)

Amazing what a difference lighting can make. Honestly, you could probably convince me that the top picture is from FFXI, not XIV. Now we're really getting somewhere.

Does Famitsu give any hint on when beta will start?

You guys serious? the second pic is just a higher resolution screenshot with better lighting, i don't see any differences other than that.

Even a minor change in lighting can make worlds of difference. Details in textures that were previously lost or washed out are now visible, and the addition this can make to any of the world's environments could be dramatic.

Take no notice in the resoution the top picture has been slightly enlarged so the two are the same size, so thats why the alpha picture looks more blured, the comparison is for lighting and shadows only.

This is exactly what I was talking about when people complained about the quality of the graphics when the first alpha shots/vids showed up. Lighting is the real element that boosts the quality of graphical fidelity, textures can only go so far. Lighting shows off just how good models really are, it accentuates the textures and gives them a more tangible quality instead of just a picture on top of a hard surface. I mean the geometry is still the same, and the textures technically havn't changed, but the quality of the textures in the Alpha looked horrible, and it wasn't because they themselves were bad, but the lighting was bad and the by product left everything else in the picture looking bad. There is now more emphasis on HDR + ambient light from local sources. This makes it more realistic and less hard edged like the previous alpha shots had.

Edit: I think they edited some of the textures too or added textures that weren't there. The bottles in the alpha shot have very simple glass textures but the beta ones seem more advanced with the green tinge. They look like actual wine or liquor bottles now with liquid inside of them.

That's probably more a matter of taste than technology. :p
The **** is that, the Raver's guild?

In general I'm pretty happy with where they're going lighting wise. :)

I remember I said it myself that everything looked dull/colorless, but they said it themself that it would change in the later alpha tests and it sure has it looks so much better now, in also noticed that in some off the newer leeked videos out there.

As someone else said light and shadows can really do alot to show off textures and such.

Someone apparently tightened up graphics on level 3! (Ba-dump-pish!)

Certainly looks alot nicer. Makes feel smart in my decision to play it on my PS3. It'd cost too much to upgrade my computer to be able to run it.

All of you people who are planning to play it on your PS3 are ruining the future of the game! Don't you see what happened with FFXI? PS2 limitations is the excuse for everything. If we would all boycott the PS3 version then we would never have to worry about hearing that..... :)~

By the way, I got my PS3 for 3 reasons, FFXIII, Blu-Rays, and FFXIV. So take my above post with the sense of humor intended. Please & thanks you!

Back to the topic. I'm glad there is such a visible difference. I was tired of hearing people say that the game is only going to look good on cut-scenes.

tbph, the only difference I can see is the lighting, which doesn't especially impress me. I think it looks fine either way, just in a "different but not really better" sort of way. Maybe I need to see it in action.

There's at least one other photo comparison out there as well.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

actually, i would swear that the shaders on those bottles is different. the specular is behaving differently, and there's a sense of deep translucence to them. notice that, with "global" illumination, normal maps aren't even visible (since all surfaces are illuminated along the normal under such a lighting condition) without an ambient-occlusion map being generated from it.

besides, lighting counts as part of graphical quality.

look at the floorboards the clothes npc's are wearing, detail in the stools. There's better texture quality in there as well (significantly better)

I know, man! They, like, tripled the previous plate-to-counter ratio!

sorry, but i just find the lightning in the beta is making the screen look more "unnatural".

sure resolution is better so textures are, but some are just weird to me

the bottle rack in the center looks plain, i see no texture on that(****, i can almost see an optical illusion if i look at it too much) and the "rocky" part of the ceiling just looks like some random marble texture...

Looks very nice (y) Much better. Amazing how much the element of lighting in particular can effect the graphical appearance.

And anybody ripping on these graphics has waaaay too high standards for graphics these days. This looks better than most games already and it's an MMO - pretty nice achievement.

Unnatural or not, I'm just excited to see that the game has colors other than brown, taupe, beige, and black. This and the newer leaked videos that show combat w/out lag have me REALLY pumped for the beta to start (which i hope i hope i hope i get into).

So, S-E, betainvitepleasekthanks?!?!?!
