So there are several starting cities (like XI) as well as deities your character can subscribe to (according to the FAQ). I'm not sure if there are other customization aspects as I didn't get accepted to the Alpha.

My concerns are:

1) Will starting race/area combinations have bonuses like they did in FFXI (where you got a free ring if you picked "correctly")?

2) Since the Q&A indicates that players can change their deity at a penalty, that implies that statistically, there may be an advantage in doing so. My assumption (again, didn't get into alpha so I'm making blind guesses here) is that each deity grants abilities; maybe Thor gives +5% damage to Lightning spells and Titan gives +5% Physical Damage, so if someone initially planned to be a mage and changed their mind and decided to become a DD, they could change deity to Titan or whatever. I'm wondering if the benefits of aligning with any given deity will be transparent or if early players are going to have to make a "blind luck" guess and wait for a few people to figure it out and post it.

I just wonder if the transparency in decisions vs results will be there at the beginning, so as to hopefully avoid the "Just throw out these Beastmen's Seals since they have no purpose" portion of my game playing life.

I know I read somewhere in an interview SE mentioning things like the starting city/race rings. I want to say they're trying to avoid doing that this time...but I could be remembering wrong.

Without breaking Alla's NDA policy (or trying not to), it does seem pretty obvious what the (base) benefit on any given deity will be. How exactly it will be implemented, I don't think anyone knows yet.

You know, I'd like to think that they have learned their lesson about the "secrecy" from player feedback during the last 7 years of XI. One of my biggest gripes with the game is that there were far too many items with hidden this and hidden that and stats that we weren't really sure *what* they affected until someone wrote a third party tool to parse it. It's a game, not a sting operation and things really should be more transparent.

That, and the lack of meaningful information for quests were probably my two biggest complaints about XI, and would be the dealbreaker for me migrating to XIV. I'd rather get the bulk of the information from within the game than from a wiki article.

Wiki articles are for when you are at work and can't play :p

SE stated that it will be like FFXI so same world same server. I also enjoy playing with people from around the world. some one is always on nomatter what time your on. its great.

This was the worst feeling in the world. When I finally found out what the seals were for, and realized how many I'd just pitched, I was super peeved. It also looks like they finally started showing what items like certain foods do in FFXI. When I quit playing, it was still a crap shoot, if you didn't look up the effects on a website. I hope they put in the effects of food at least.

So glad that I work from home! I have my PS3 and TV in my office, so I'll be fishing and crafting while waiting for the phone to ring :D

Must be nice to work from home :p

Boy I do hope they put the food effects right on the item itself. What a pain to go to the wiki to look up something every time to see what foods affected this or that. Their excuse for a lot of it was Ps2 limitations and some of it I understand, but they don't have that excuse anymore so I do hope they put the extra effort into the no-brainer things they skipped over last time.

Yeah, transparency (or lack thereof) was one of my bigger issues in FFXI.

What does (insert food here) do? Even after figuring out the generalities (sushi is accuracy, meat is damage, shellfish is defense, pastries are MP), every food is different. How, without knowing where to look the information up online, is one supposed to know whether Grape Juice is better than Apple Juice, or whether I should use Squid Sushi or Sole Sushi? Sure, I could pop food and look at my stats (never mind that accuracy is invisible for a second here) but even then, that's insane to waste that much money on food (and then wait 30-180 mins for it to wear off in most cases).

And why is that monster intimidated by me? Obviously it must be the cookies I just ate.

Dune Boots are junk. Clearly, they couldn't possibly give bonuses to anything like, say Kick Attacks...

This new cape I got for my NIN gives me +9 Eva and +4 Enmity. It's pretty cool, but I have no clue why I seem to get critted more now...

So yeah; I don't need the game to spell out everything for me (STR <- This affects how much damage you deal) but a little more help in figuring out stuff that isn't obvious would be nice.

While I understand the frustration, I personally found this to be one of the more awesome aspects of ffxi. I loved the thought of unkillable bosses and mystery items and the such.

I plan to get right geek like with ffxiv, so Im hoping for some of the same mystery and challenge of FFxi.
