I am personally excited about the newest information given on the city-states. It has definitely made the decision of where I want to start out harder, though, especially with the mention of specific themed guilds and such. So, where is everyone else planning on starting out with the information we have now? What do you like/dislike about the new information?

Anyone with premium want to make a poll? :D

Which city state allows night elf mohawks? :)

Kidding. I'll be where ever the alchemy guild is.

I've always kinda planned on starting in Gridania. I liked the artwork of the city when they first had it up on the official site. It reminds me of Windy from XI. I like the whole forest'y type theme.

Although I do really like desert themes as well... but I think I'll stick with Gridania at first.

Ul'Dah is the most appealing one right now. With the whole Sultan/middle eastern thing going on.

However, if Gridania's surrounding forest is more like a Jungle than a normal forest, the choice becomes harder.

Not to mention what happens when they give LL proper lightning and we'll see how weather changes the atmosphere. **** it.

Based on the info given so far, I'm liking the back story of Gridania. If the layout is similar to limsa lominsa (or xi windy for that matter) I might have to go w/ Ul'dah because it seems to be the simplest in design and city layout.

At the end of the day I hope the major hub for higher level players is situated in the mountains (which so far it is looking like that might be the case).

It certainly is, but from the concept art I saw, it's not really a snowy city at all, like you might think. Still quite spectacular either way, can't wait to visit it.

I've based my choice so far on concept art, and Gridania wins. I've never been a big ship fan so Limsa is out of the question for me. Though XIVs ship port does look pretty good.

I'm going with Gridania based on what we've seen so far. Limsa Lominsa seems a bit dull to me thus far...maybe the color palette used for the city is too limited or something, I'm not sure. It reminds me of Bastok, which I was never crazy about. I'm waiting to see some screenshots of Ul'dah, but the prospect of the barren deserts surrounding it don't excite me.

Gridania seems like it's shaping up to be a dense, lush, and colorful environment. Sign me up.

After reading that there will be fishing in the rivers and such around Gridania, I'm definitely leaning that way.

I like the idea that Uldah will have the gladiator/coliseum thing going on... it'll give me something to do when I don't want to go monster hunting and it will let me sharpen up my skills :)

Gridania. Im going to go with a soloist type; Archer, Wood Elf, Trapper/Leatherworker/Fisherman. Though, I might switch to Woodworking/Logging instead of the Leatherworking/Trapping.

Gridania reminds me of San d'Oria, my first love, and original hometown in FFxi.

I've been pretty out of it for getting info, so excuse me if this is just out there with neon signs and arrows, and I missed it, but...

...are races going to be tied to cities again like they were in FFXI? I really haven't seen much on that, and it was one of the things that I really loved about FFXI.

Definitely Gridania for me. I wish there was a starter city by the beach, though. They tend to be my favorite type of setting.

To make the answer simple: no, races will not be "tied" to cities, per say, according to the information SE has released. They said they are leaning more towards being tied to specific "guilds" instead and some of the starting cities will have themes that go along with said guilds, although we still have yet to find out much information on this. Hope that helps. :)

The major difference between XI and XIV nations is how they interact with each other. XI started out having the nations "at war" for territory and power. In XIV the nations start out united against the common threat from the north, The Garlean Empire. This helps to integrate cities, although they have mentioned that some races are more inclined to certain areas (such as the Roegadyn being more centrally located in Limsa Lominisa and the Plainsfolk Lalafell being located in gridania while the dunesfolk lalafell are generally from Ul'dah.)

*edit*

Also, all the race info can be found here:

As well as a lot of other great info on the game!

Thank you for the link (cool stuff I hadn't seen yet ^^).

While I was leaning towards Gridania, I think I will probably start in Ul'dah. I know I want to start as a Lalafell, and after looking at the subraces, I love the look of the Dunesfolk, so it looks like Ul'dah for me.

Ul'Dah for me. I am wanting to make a darker skinned character (not decided on race yet) so a desert home seems fitting to make a sun baked Eorzean. Also, the gambling and fighting arena sounds like it will be pretty awesome.

Side note: I really am looking forward to making trips to the other cities. Some of my favorite moments in XI were my first visits to the other cities. I loved how each city had it's own personality. Almost more fun than the visit was the trip to the city.
