Apologies if this has been covered, but I can't seem to find much on it. I've heard that the Square Enix Security Tokens have been backordered for months with XI - but that they'll also be required for XIV? Do we have confirmation on them being required, or was I just dreaming this up?

Would it be smart to put in an order for one asap, or would it be safe to wait closer to the release of XIV?

Thanks.

They are not required, just give an added layer of security for those who want it. It is very similar to how big banks have key fobs with a unique 5 digit key that changes every 5 minutes or something.

These are pretty good, because unless you're crazy **** and you change your gaming passwords every other month and none of your passwords for any sites you visit/use are the same, then there is a pretty good chance a hacker could get a hold of it. If this game even turns out to be halfway decent, there will be players foolishly buying in-game currency through these sites, and most often, these gold selling sites are just hacking active players and vendoring their gear and then selling players that gold. A simple extra layer like this will prevent a lot of headache, but isn't entirely foolproof.

I would hope that they would go the way Blizzard did and add an authenticator to iPhones/iPods and a couple other major phone retailers as a courtesy download. Because once you get hacked, you really don't want to wait 2 weeks for your authenticator to arrive.

Agreed. I'll be disappointed if they don't. Of course, XI has had the tokens for what, about a year (?) and no sign of an app...
