Getting the alpha to workFollow

So I was in the first round of alpha invites. Only problem was that after downloading, it wouldn't work. I simply downloaded the client to a folder in program files, then created a desktop shortcut. When clicking on the "Final Fantasy XIV Alpha Version" icon, it would try to open the window but would always inevitably say "Final Fantasy XIV Alpha has stopped working".

I chaulked it up to a crappy computer and cussed a little. A few days later I tried it on my work computer. Same problem. The wording was a little different about the error since my work computer is vista and my home computer is xp. But basically the same problem.

Since then I've tried on two seperate computers. One is XP, the other is Windows 7. All meet the system requirements (hard drive space and such). All give the same error.

Unfortunately only email support is being given for XIV at the moment, so its not like I can get a tech to walk me through what needs to be done. Just wondering if anyone else had these problems and there is an easy fix. Also, sorry if this has been answered, I'm trying to stay away from boards about XIV until I play so everything can be new. It wasn't on the first page at least from what I could see.

That error occurs when your system specs don't meet the requirements. Are you sure your PC is just not good enough for it?

unfortunatly help for that will be limited as cant really talk about alpha due to NDA, however.. I dont have alpha or beta or any right now so dont know if anything i say will be even close.. But I recommmend trying to redownload and reisntall the software, leave it set to default path and try again. might help.

Mine may very well be not good enough. But the latest one I tried is an absolute beast. Brand new $2300 computer my buddy just bought. If it's not good enough I'm priced out.

You might want to check to see if you have updated video drivers. I had issues with the installer crashing due to old drivers.

Also what's the nature of your crash -- just a black screen?

And if you're having trouble getting into the alpha forums, you need to use Firefox. :D

Then the game may very well be corrupted somehow.

Tried redownloading the client?

Well, I don't want to turn this into a bigger deal than it is. And I certainly don't want to violate the NDA stuff although I figured tech support wouldn't really fall under in game secrets. Was really just hoping someone had had the same experience and would give a quick answer. I'm an old man in computer years (35) so if it takes anything more than cut and paste I'll be happy to just wait for the full release.

Also, after looking at some of the boards inside the FFXIV alpha site, it seems there are several people with a similar problem. I'll just monitor those boards and hopefully someone will figure it out.

Hey, now! Us over 30 folks aren't so bad at computers. In fact, I knew a guy who passed away last year at the age of 65 who was largely self-taught, and knew nearly as much as I did about PCs. I've been doing something with computers (programing, building, etc.) since I was 11, which was well over 20 years ago. :)

Don't you have ffxiv alpha private forums or something? I'm guessing you'll find a lot more people over there having the same problems as yourself.

Nitpicking being what it is, you already violated the NDA by announcing that you are a tester. That having been said, worst case scenario you could wait until the beta client is released and try that. The alpha client was a pretty rough release just to get the ball rolling.

Awesome, I so glad you signed up for something your unqualified to take part in, showing you didn't care all that much about helping anyway, and taking up a spot that those of us who really are capable and willing to figure out the bugs/workarounds/fixes could take part!

Really, again, awesome job!

Considering we don't know what the problem is, you're a little off base with the flaming. There are other alpha testers who can't get the game to run, either, and my guess is that it's something to do with drivers or the way they're installing it (ie. a facepalm moment if/when they find out what they did wrong) but nobody had any information at all about what would be required when they signed up for the beta.

I wouldn't want half of you shiny happy people beta testing anyways, even if you could get the game up and running without issue within moments of finishing the client download. Something about the blind giving feedback on behalf of those who are not blind... Don't let your bitter butthurtedness be cause to be a frothing lunatic. It's just not worth it.

the smart moneys on downloading it again since you havent said youve done that atleast in the OP, all this other bs tl;dr

USING MY AMAZING ORACLE POWERS:
Im guessing the ffxiv beta site probably has like some kind of tech support forums
I bet the original client needed to be deleted for the second one to update or something lawl

Just throwing this out, but try right clicking on the setup file (if there is one) and choose Run as Administrator.

Just tossing this out there, maybe there is a security setting on your computer blocking it from running. Remember how the POL viewer was incompatible with Vista and they had to make a separate version just for Vista users? It gave me the same error when I would try to launch it unless I turned off the security setting (where Windows asks permission to run it). I can't remember how to turn off that setting, but maybe worth trying... though not exactly the best solution because you're compromising your security from other rogue applications that might be out there.
