Can check it out here. http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/1236525_1124.html

Here is a partial translation.

Famitsu: What version are we seeing here is this the beta?
Tanaka: It's very close we are still debugging and balancing its one step before the beta.

Famitsu: What has changed in this version?
Tanaka: It's very close to the final version. Ability to change the color of the Miqo'te tail and the ear style of the Miqo'te and Elezen, will be implemented by retail.

Famitsu: Any other changes?
Tanaka: Action bar is longer, Hp, Mp, elemental bonus, physical bonus will grow when they set up a system, the version from the alpha will become more simple.

Famitsu: 3d support has also been exhibited.
Tanaka: 3d is still under consideration, we have 3d Surround Edition setup thanks to Nvidia.

Famitsu: The visuals in the beta are better has this changed the PC specs?
Tanaka: Blur, ambient occlusion, projection shadows have been added. The effects can be changed.

Famitsu: In the beta version you can customize the graphics to what degree?
Tanaka: Some can be set in the main menu, we also started distributing benchmark software to check your specs.

Famitsu: This is the PC version what about the PlayStation 3 version?
Tanaka: Its under active development we are working closely with SCE. There will be various environment options too.

Famitsu: When is the beta test?
Tanaka: The version you see here is nearly complete almost ready to be published, but we are currently debugging. When the alpha tests end this week and we get back to Japan we will immediately begin preparations for the beta test. We don't want to keep you waiting for the beta test any longer then one month.

Famitsu: What plans do you have for communication elements?
Tanaka: During the beta test we plan to introduce community tools for each player. Each player will have a specific page, that is, and make sure each person can have features like message boards. There will be a FFXI like simple translation system in place. We will provide linkshells again and even a big step further called "Company"

Famitsu: How about voice chat?
Tanaka: Voice chat between PC and PS3 would be hard, and also if playing with people from overseas real time voice translation would be quite difficult to implement.

Famitsu: Any message for the players out there?
Tanaka: Testing on the beta will begin soon, enjoy it thank you.

I really hope that all versions of the game (ie in each country) will allow Japanese characters to be typed. I got the impression in FFXI that the developers don't really think non-Japanese people can speak/read japanese... (I know this isn't 100% true... but there was pretty much 0 official support for this)

It seems like their opinions haven't changed... It sounds like he completely skipped over the idea that there might be some people that could communicate without the need of translation. And ****... people are playing Halo and MW2 all the time speaking different languages!

You're overlooking the argument he made addressing the cross-platform issue. I'm pretty sure servers for those games are for their specific platforms, aren't they? I like the idea of voicechat but I always have the option of using vent, etc. so I don't mind that SE is focusing on other aspects of the game instead of implementing something not crucial to gameplay.

I used to like "linkshell," but now it just seems so hokey compared to "guild."

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Exactly, like Bluefire said. going between PC and PS3 would be difficult communication wise.

I like that it's easily abbreviated to "LS". Can't do that with "Guild". So it's got that going for it, at least.

Not really, I wasn't commenting on whether or not they plan on introducing cross platform voice chat. I was talking about the comment he made on real time, overseas, voice translation...

Cross platorm or not, many other games have voice chat support regardless of the nationality of the players. The very idea of real time voice translation is crazy, and I don't understand why he would take the time to bring that up...

Company, I like the sound of that. Maybe Several Linkshells banding together ( But keeping their own LS name )to fight?

I might go as far as to think that the start of beta would affect the release date in a positive way.

If everything goes a planned they may finish early and release the game early. But we all know nothing goes as planned to expect the game late 2010 early 2011.

From what I understand, Linkshells and Companies are not related at all. A company is more of a formal organization which could have assets of its own (its own bank, its own web page, its own company housing, etc) while a linkshell will remain what it is in FFXI, which is a social convenience more akin to a custom chat channel in other games.

So a company would likely contain people from many different linkshells, but those people would join as individuals and not because their linkshell was absorbed into the company.

This is interesting, I wonder if perhaps we will see the advent of social linkshells, and endgame Companies. I was always somewhat frustrated that I could not easily keep my endgame and casualgame separate. Perhaps people will use Companies as more of an endgame organization sort of thing, and Linkshells for chat and socialization purposes.
