I remember reading about this long ago, and as I recall, at least at the time, they were planning to have cross-platform account access. i.e., you could start up your account initially on a PS3, but also log in from a PC (with the game installed). Contrasted to XI where if you created your account on a PS2, you would always and forever have to play with that account on a PS2. My impression was that they intended to allow you to, say, play on a PS3 at home, and then log in from work on your PC (not that you would ever do that >_>).

Has there been any new word on this? It seems like an important feature that may have been overlooked in all of the recent excitement about content.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Actually I was wondering this same thing today. I might get an account for PS3 at first, depending on my PC and $$$$ to upgrade it later on.

Im fairly sure FFXI allowed Cross-platform logins with one account.

Or am I missing something?

Maybe it did? I was always under the impression that it didn't, though it never really concerned me at the time.

Can someone confirm/deny? I guess it's safe to assume you can do it in XIV if it was doable in XI.

From my experience from going to PS2 to PC back to PS2 to 360. I would say it has cross platform login as long as you have your account info, it's possible.

Cross platform login worked on ffxi. since i went from ps2, quit, came back on pc, then back to ps2. I'm sure ffxiv be the same. Since all your login id and such is all saved on SE servers. Since all platforms going to be on the same servers the I don't see why it would change.

Now if servers were pc only, and ps3 only. Then it be different, but since they aint. No need to worry.

We did via PS2 and PC, however using the OP as a jumping point... It would be nice if I bought the PS3 version and didn't have to pay for the PC client or expansions when using the same account.

I can also confirm cross platform support. Started my account on PS2, switched to PC later. I would never have considered switching if I had to start all over with a new character.

As for only having to pay for one client, as wicked as that would be, there's simply no way that would ever happen. Programming for the PS3 is considerably different than PC and you need to have way more options on a PC version of a game to account for different people's rigs, OS's, etc. Whereas, PS3, there's only one set of specs to worry about. The company wants (and deserves) payment for that - they had to develop it. Something that might be cool and more feasible is offering a discount of some kind for second (or third, etc.) iteration of the game you buy with the same account. However, I don't see either option becoming reality. :/

Nor do I, but I can dream... IF I can get my wife interested at least I'll fell justified keeping both clients up to date. I just doubt I'll be able to get her to invest more than 4 hours in a years time frame.

They would actually have to add something in to limit cross-platform account use, not take something out. This was already possible in FFXI. Typically, when you start up a game, the launcher looks for two things: is the client up to date, and does the account have access. While I am sure that somewhere they keep track of which platform you're using (my experience working for MMO companies tells me that if they can track anything, they will), they would have to add in a block to keep people from logging into an account on a different platform than the one from which they created the account.

Granted, you can never tell with game companies, but players were able to play FFXI on any platform which had an up to date client as long as they had an active account. I would be very surprised if they actually went in and limited accounts from using multiple platforms.
