What options do you plan on selecting for your character? Based on the info (or lack of) that we currently have. So...

Race:
Gender:
Tribe:
God:
City:
Class:

For me, I think it will be...

Race: Miqo'te
Gender: Female
Tribe: Keepers of the Moon
God: Llymlaen (unless you have to pick Menphina as a Keeper of the Moon)
City: Limsa Lominsa / Gridania
Class: Conjurer

Roegadyn
Sea Wolf
I'm not sure about the God. Maybe Llymlaen, the Navigator.
Depends on where my class's guild is but it looks like Limsa Lominsa for now.

So far, I'm envisioning my character as a suave-ish/worldly Roegadyn, but empathetic as kind of a foil to what I normally think Roegadyn are like.

A class he might specialize in could be Musketeer. I also have an interest in playing a specialized healing class and a buffing/debuffing class.

In lieu of making an original character, I'm going to remake my FFXI characters. I'm still not entirely sure about jobs though - I'll need to get some hands-on experience with the system before actually choosing.

At this point I'd only be playing because I loved what they were doing mechanically.
Art Direction-wise, which is by far the easiest way for MMO to worm it's way into my heart, they could not have lost me any harder. At the moment, my race selection would be essentially randomized.

All by themselves each individual class is pretty standard. I mean this in terms of aesthetics and mechanics. Where the area of interest lies is in the capability of mixing and matching abilities from other classes to create something more mechanically complex. Sadly, it seems so far there's some curiously heavy restrictions on mixing DoW and DoM, ranging from merely impractical to completely non-functioning. I'm hesitant to embrace a system for it's flexibility when it takes my available options and slices them cleanly in half before I've even really started.

I dunno, I might do Ul'dah, since it seems like it may be the least populated, what with everyone liking Gridania. Probably won't help that most alpha/beta testers will probably be sick of Limsa by the time the game hits retail.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Yeah, I wonder why Gridania is so popular. It's nothing spectacular IMO. I hope Ishgard will be good looking so it spreads out the population a bit. (: From the map picture it looks like San d'Oria but on a hilltop.

[edit] Oh wait, Ishgard isn't an available starting town, is it? Too bad...

Three words: Location, location, location. A lot of people seem to like Gridania because it's fairly near the center of Aldenard, making it easier for Gridanian adventurers to get to Ishgard. It'd be slightly harder for people from Ul'dah to get to Ishgard, but at least they're on the same landmass; Limsa Lominsa is situated off the coast of an island, so getting from LL to Ishgard might be the new "Windurst to Jueno" or "Windurst to Selbina" trip that nobody wants to take.

That being said, I always loved the Pirate/Sea Horror attacks on the ferry to Selbina, and I had quite a few laughs with friends huffing it from Windurst to Jeuno. I just picked Gridania because it looks so pretty.

Someone scribbled all over this one though.

But no, seriously... looking at it, I see how Limsa Lominsa is off on that island, and Ul'dah seems to be surrounded by brown (dirt? wasteland?) whereas Gridania seems to be surrounded by dark green (grass, trees). So at this point, it's a matter of deciding between Limsa or Gridania. I'll probably go with whichever has more of a medieval feel to it (like San d'Oria).

Unless we start with rings again, depending on city choice. That is DEFINITELY one thing I'd love to know before making my character this time around.

I'm with you. I chose San d'Oria in FFXI because it looked so medieval, too. This time around, however, it looks like only Ishgard will be medieval looking, and it's not a starting location you can choose...

Kinda torn on what to play. I was a taru in FFXI and the pull to make a lala is going strong. On the other hand, I'm burnt out from playing healers and want to do something different. Gladiator is tempting -- I've enjoyed tanking -- but not sure yet.

Does anyone know if SE plans on putting out a site so people can create/plan a character? You know like the one for WOW where you could create a character and put in points and whatnot so you could kinda plan ahead. I think it would be neat to be able to do this seeing as there are more options this time around than there were in FFXI.

Funny thing- I actually looked up the origin of this once, and "I could care less" was first sometime in the 80s, and it is meant sarcastically. "I couldn't care less" came after as people are not able to detect sarcasm and adapted the saying to their unsarcastic ways.

Thanks, I'm getting sick of people drawing attention to this (like six times this past month on this forum alone). It's one thing when they're trying to be clever or cute by pointing it out. It's another when they're trying to be a pedantic smartass.

I feel like it'll take me years (If ever...) to use these new race names... Miqo'te isn't quite as friendly (Or as easy to remember) as "Mithra."
Anyway, I'm not quite sure yet? While I always liked Mithra in FFXI, I didn't like some of the stigma attached to them... So I stuck with hume. I find myself not caring quite so much now, and I think everyone tends to just believe you're male until proven otherwise anyway, so... I'll probably be a pale/dark-skinned kitty gal that likes to punch things. :3
