PS3 720 VS PC 1080Follow

I figured someone would start this at some point, so let's get it over with.
Now that PS3 will be limited to 720 res., will it change your decision to upgrade your PC? Pick either PS3 or PC.

I tried to make a poll, but Al Gore wouldn't let me.

It does not change my plans at all. I would prefer to play on PC but my comp is too underpowered to play it anyway. I've got a rig in mind and am saving up my bits of extra money instead of going out to eat or buying a new novel every week to upgrade my PC. Until I have the money to upgrade I will be playing on the PS3 from launch since I already own one. So far my simple math tells me that it will be an estimated 6-9 months after launch, as long as launch stays within the calender year, before I am able to transition from PS3 to PC.

I'm still going to be playing on PS3. My PC is pretty much my wife's, and I do all the gaming on the PS3. Resolution has no bearing to me. I will be replacing my old Phillips 27" CRT TV with an LCD before release though! :)

I had always operated under the assumption that XIV on PS3 would be 720p, just as the actual game portions of FFXIII were, which uses the same engine. FFXIII looked fantastic (IMHO) in 720p, and I'm not concerned at all about how XIV will look on my HDTV.

I do plan on building/buying a PC at some point that will run XIV, but I don't think I'll be feeling too much pressure to upgrade before my finances are ready. It's gonna look and play great on the console.

TBH I dont see the difference between them, maybe a very very small difference but no way near enough for me to switch to PC.

Wouldn't be much of a difference either way, you might get true 1080p on your PC but the PS3 and latest HDTVs can all upscale to 1080p without any problems whatsoever and look just as nice.

Still would be cheaper to just play it on your ps3 if you have one rather than upgrade, the difference isn't all that much, at least not like the difference between PC and ps2 for FFXI. I got headaches if i played to long.

It will be beautiful on both. My PC can only run it in 720 as well, my score for 1080 was ****** lol. Only reason I prefer the PC is the controls. Keyboards just have so many more macro/keybinding functions and I'm a lot quicker on my keyboard than I am the controller. I played on FFXI on 360 for a while and got spoiled sitting on my couch with a bucket of beers but I just bought a new computer chair and L shaped desk (I call it my command center), so I feel my PC will be just as comfortable now. Oh well my wife makes hella bones, she'll buy me a new PC for my birtday lol. She can play on the PS3.

Well I already own a PC that will run it fine in 720P, and I have a PS3. I don't think I really want to drop the cash on a high end video card right now just to play one game in 1080P, but if the PC control scheme is better than it was for FFXI (for example, if I can bind my keys the way I want) then I'll probably pick it up for PC, since I'll be in a position to play at a higher resolution when the cost of cards or even a new system comes down in a year or two.

IMO I feel that because the pc requirements are so demanding for an average rig, most people wouldn't mind picking up a ps3 as they are getting cheaper now. I have a feeling FFXIV will be a lot like FFXI where the player base was a majority on the ps2. That being said I can't see the PC being all that far ahead. Also like what a lot of other people said, it is the same engine as ffiii and that is absolutely beautiful.

Upscaling from a lower resolution doesn't actually add detail.

I thought of it first:

PC - I don't own a PS3 and unless there is a definate confirmation that FFXIV will be on 360 at release, I won't be changing my mind.

My system isn't that bad, the only thing letting it down big style is the graphics card, so I am on the look out for a new one. I hope to have enough saved up before its ready for launch.

There is just something more 'sociable' about PC MMO's, for me anyway. It's easier (again for me) to actually talk to people and organise events. It's also very handy to be able to 'window' out of the game brielfy to quickly check maps or drop information.

This reasoning is based entirely on my FFXI experience however, it might be an entirely new 'feel' when FFXIV hits our screens, but for now, PC.

PS3

Simply because i can only run FFXIV at like... 20ish fps. My PS3 i know will run it flawlessly so i don't feel like building a new pc for one game.

720v1080 doesn't matter too since my tv is a 720p anyways haha.

I think anyone with a good pc already will play on the pc, otherwise other people will go to the ps3.

Scaling doesn't bring back the ~45% of lost detail.

Aww, I was beaten to it =(

I plan on playing on both, but a majority of the time I will be playing on my pc. My current monitor only supports 1440 X 900, but I plan on upgrading around Christmas (top of my list for Santa!)To be honest, I thought 720 on my pc looked fanfrickintastic though :)

Someone mentioned previously how they like using their keyboard as opposed to a controler. I am the exact opposite. I have always struggled with using just a keyboard. Perhaps there are just too many keys and my simple mind gets confused lol. I played XI on both PS2 and pc, and while on pc I used a logitech USB controler. That being said, does anyone know if a USB controller will work with XIV? I really hope it does...

The controller vs keyboard/mouse argument for making a decision on what platform to play it on really doesn't present much of a factor in my opinion. You can plug in and configure a controller on a PC while hooking it up to your living room TV (unless you got an old *** SD CRT or something), just as easily as you could use a mouse and keyboard on a PS3 that you could plug into a monitor and have a desktop configuration. I have little doubt you'll be able to use the same logitech controller in FFXIV. I used a wireless 360 adapter to play FFXI on my laptop because I preferred controller as well. No way they waste the time building the game to be playable with a controller on a PS3, only to disable that option on a PC. That's one great thing about FFXI and most likely FFXIV when it comes out, it gave you options on what interface you want to use. Go try playing WoW with a controller. Not gonna happen.

I'm thinking that for most people money will decide for them.

Either they:
a.)Already have a PC that can play it decently.
b.)PC not good enough, but they already have a PS3.
c.)PC not good enough, but can afford a PS3.
d.)PC not good enough, but they can afford a new PC.

There are other threads that are trying to put a solid Dollar amount on a PC that can run FXIV decently. The lowest I've seen is $500 and that is a build-it-yourself. Pre-packaged PC deals that can run this are somewhere in the ~$800 range at minimum.

e.)PC not good enough, but they can afford to upgrade it. (This is a questionable strategy.)
f.)PC is good enough, but they just prefer console.

Good question, though - Anyone that planned to play on PS3 going to run out to buy a PC for +240 resolution?

I think setting and preference enter into it as well. I personally prefer my computer room as it has a recliner, AC right next to me, TV to the left and second computer to the right of my main system, plus my fiancee's computer is about 6 feet away and we're both planning to play together.

Even if I had a PS3, it wouldn't be an option because my couch isn't as nice, we can't play in the same room, the AC is much farther away. I prefer keyboard/mouse to controller but since you can use them on either system, that's moot. For me, it's all a matter of wanting to be able to sit in the same room together, comfortably, and have my game, my TV, my reference computer, my comfy chair, my ottoman, and my soon to be wife.

Plus, money can have relative value in addition to absolute value. I wouldn't think twice about dropping 500-700 on computer parts, but 300 for a console gives me pause.

$500 is going to be pretty hard to reach, MAYBE before tax and shipping.

All of the video cards I would recommend start at $200, the power supply and case is another hundred easily, the CPU will be about $100, memory for system will be at or above $100, a hard drive can be had for 50$ if you don't care at all about load times, 30-40 for a cd-rom, mother board is another $100-150.

That's already over $750
