Among the many reasons I decided to finally leave FFXI was the same old boring content and level/merit set up. After leveling my Monk to 75 and doing some merits/missions/endgame, I realized I wanted to do something more pivotal in the game. I leveled WHM up to around 60 or so and tired of healing quickly. Tanking was sounding more and more interesting but merit parties didn't even use tanks anymore. I always thought it would be fun to tank with war using axe/shield or sword/shield but they paled in comparison to paladin. Paladin's however used /nin and DD gear too. The only time they got to be a real tank was in a boss fight :( Instead of turning this into a /nin ruined the game ffxi sucks thread, I'll just move on. With all the mistakes SE has apparently comprehended from FFXI, do you think we'll see some real tank action in FFXIV? Not just tank and spank but having 2 or 3 tanks in endgame fights taunting off of eachother using strategy to take down the boss. Perhaps even something along the lines of being able to level up through instanced dungeons/guildleaves that actually require a damage mitigating tank?

Without mentioning and names, I play this other game in which I leveled up my protection warrior almost solely through 5man dungeon runs. Beats the **** out of pulling one rabbit to a camp and hitting it for 2-3 minutes for 1/1000 of a level.

If tanks are actually necessary and useful in almost everything I'm highly considering rolling a gladiator. Any thoughts?

I have no idea what will end up happening, but I am highly in favor of tanking being a required thing for high end/tough monster and boss fights. It just seems like something that should happen. When I picture an epic fantasy fight I always see in my head the armor clad shield wielding warrior charging head first to absorb the damage, a healing mage patching up his wounds on the fly, and a damage mage and archer pounding in the damage on the enemies sides. That is just my own personal opinion, of course.

I hope that happens as well, though I've never been one to play a tank I always thought it took a little something away from strategy when fights turn into full dps burning things down.

I'm hopeful that FFXIV will be more conducive to competent tanks with square going on about fighting parties of mobs.

I'm not saying you should have kept playing FFXI, but I did notice they added some features to War in the update for tanking. I think it was an extra damage reduction when using a shield and a damage bonus of some kind when using only one weapon in a single hand.

I'm planning on trying to make a FFXIV version of a paladin tank, with some healing/helpful magic abilities & some of the pro-tank abilities from other classes. I really hope tanks are useful in this game because I've been looking forward to building one. ^_^ That miqo'te in the E3 beta demo with the giant shield & sword just looked so great.

With the way you can kind of build-your-own class it will be interesting to see the kinds of tanks people create.

Sounds more like the welcoming of the Hedge Hog or phalanx defense.

I plan on making a Gladiator Tank with Defender, Chakra, Mocking Provoke, Cure, Stoneskin(def up), Life Surge.

Would be virtually invincible with that much healing ability, but then again, I carry around a pocket healer (I dual box and PL myself)

Speaking of tanking abilities, I just had an idea for a Cover ability. What if as a tank, you could "cast" cover on a specific party member, like say, your healer? It lasts for x amount of minutes. But the first time your chosen party member gets hit with cover on, you take the damage that would have been received.

Well don't forget GLD isn't just a tanking class and that other classes have tanking abilities like MRD has Defender, PUG has Mocking Provoke, and CON has Cure. It's not so much as which classes to take up, it's more about mixing and matching abilities that fit your play stay.

Gladiator is the main tanking class at the moment though, as they have a shield. The others have abilities so they can take a few stray hits, and also so Gladiator has to level other classes in order to get all the tanking abilities.
