I know there's a lot of these threads around but they each ask different things specifically and well, I have my own question and don't want to hijack anyone else's question or thread.

#1: When Pre-Ordering, does anyone know yet if you will get the special in game "pre-order-goggles" if you pre-order it in person from a store like Gamestop? Or is it only if you get it off the official Square Enix website? Or Amazon?

#2: From what I see and what I've read, and what common sense would say, you get the Goggles from pre-ordering (regular edition OR collectors edition) and the Onion Helm from getting the collectors edition (meaning you can get both from pre-ordering the collectors edition). Correct? I'm almost 99% sure I'm just seeing if anyone can confirm it.

#3: With Amazon.com or Squareenix.com I'm weary of ordering the game online, because when the servers go live I want to be there with everyone else at the forefront. I don't want to be sitting around saying "Well UPS didn't come today..." and trying to track down shipping numbers. Usually when I go through gamestop and they are releasing a big title like this it's always there right on time, all I have to do is pick it up. Can anyone tell me of any experiences they've had like this with Amazon.com or Squareenix.com? Did your stuff come on time? Also Amazon.com says they will deliver on game release day. Does that mean it will get to you the DAY the servers go live or the day it's released "everywhere" which will be before the servers go live?

Thanks for any help and anyone who can answer these questions.

You can pre-order in store and recently it was confirmed by an e-mail to SE that you only get the goggles from regular edition and you only get onion helm from CE - so you can't own both unless you get both copies of the game.

That doesn't quite make sense... It would be a mistake on Square Enix's part because if people really like the goggles they would just by the regular edition when normally they might buy the collectors edition (which is more profit for Square Enix). It's like reverse incentive, just doesn't quite make sense so forgive my skepticism. It just makes a lot more sense that they would give a special item for pre-orders and a special item for collectors edition. Collector Edition games are usually about giving people everything they would get in a normal edition + more.

But anyhow, everything I read and have heard and that makes sense says Goggles = Preoder / Onion Helm = Collectors Edition. Just wondering if it works if you pre-order it from a store like game stop in person.

1. MerylStryfe has said that you can get the items by ordering in-store (works for gamestop)
2. General consensus is that you should get the goggles from both.
3. I've heard people on Alla here list good experiences with Amazon's release date shipping. Release day means retail release day.

I just put down the $10 to pre-order the Collector's Edition from GameStop.. I'm being OCD about this purchase though, considering how important it is.. So is there any way to confirm that I did pre-order the CE and not the Standard Edition? Without calling them and asking, anyway.

It says >640188 Final Fantasy XIV< on the receipt.. Soo, that's the Collector's Edition, right?

640188 is the SKU I'm guessing. Other than calling them and asking them, I guess they only other way to know was if someone posted their SKU from the regular edition.

I got that same SKU number when pre-ordering the CE. There was a thread over on the gamefaqs board too, where a bunch of other people had pre-ordered the CE at Gamestop and had the same concern as you, wondering if the version they pre-ordered was indeed the CE, since it doesn't really specify on the Gamestop receipt. Should be fine though.

When I preordered the game cube a long time ago from game stop. I ended up getting the system and my 3 games 3 days before launch date, it was awsome. I guess i was really lucky.

I would just like to have the game by the 22nd thats all.

According to the Official FFxiv site you get the goggles for pre-ordering the SE, and you get the onion helm for pre-ordering the CE. The goggles {not sure bout the helm} only work for a certain amount of time to allow people who didn't start on the 22nd to catch up to people who did start early {who pre-ordered CE}. A lot of people seem to think the goggles will last forever but they wont. I don't think they've stated how long they last as of yet but my guess is after about a week the goggles will have no use.

Not doubting you, but do you have a source for this? I had not heard anything of this sort yet.

I could've sworn that one of the sites that was showing a translation of item descriptions from Japanese said that you could only have 1 of the items.

JeuxOnLine:Many questions were asked about the differences between the two versions (standard and collector), especially about their bonus item. Can you tell us clearly the differences between the two versions? For example, do the Garlond glasses have limited use?

Tanaka:* * long speech

Saori: * laughs * Do you remember the name of the object?

JeuxOnLine:You mean, the bonus item?

Saori: Yes,the bonus item.

JeuxOnLine: The Garlond glasses.

Tanaka:Oh! There are indeed two different versions that offer very useful objects for the beginning of the game, but they are more aesthetic objects than anything else. We did not want to create too large of a disparity between those who had a particular item and those who did not. We have therefore imposed certain limits on their usefulness, making sure you do not make them indispensable. Take the example of Onion Helmet, for those who ordered the collector version. It is a hat that can reduce the penalty on the dead because players tend to die easily at the beginning of the game. Regarding the glasses they allow players to more easily catch those who have started one week in advance: it is faster for them to develop their talents.

JeuxOnLine: The glasses have really only been made to catch up then.

SaoriYes, indeed.

Maybe my reading comprehension is failing me, but that doesn't sound like the glasses will only work for a week. It says it's to help people catch up to those with a headstart, and that it's usefulness will wane as you level higher and higher. I would think it more likely that it only speeds your skill to a certain level, rather than be limited by time.

Maybe there's a cap set for the glasses or they work like empress bands with so many charges, but not rechargable. However they work, it's probably safe to say many people will be reaching their max potential pretty quickly. Within a week sounds like a decent guess, though perhaps longer for other players.

To be fair, no one said that they would work for a week.

He only guesses at such a limit, his personal interpretation, not unlike your own. Regardless, it looks like the googles have a limited use, period. The above interview made it sound like their only purpose is to help boost players who are starting after the CE release, catch up. So regardless of how they are actually limited, it sounds like they aren't going to carry you THAT far to make a big deal out of them. A week. levels 1-10. Does it really matter? I wouldn't be surprised at the Helm having limitations, or the Asuran Armbands from FFXIII registration. But he does mention aesthetic purposes. That's all I cared for anyway! :)

Fair enough. =)

Btw, do you have a link to any info on the FFXIII item? I haven't seen anything for it yet.

This is a description from SQ. ENIX of the FFXIII bonus item Asuran Armguards
These gauntlets, crafted in the mysterious Far East and named after one of the land's exotic gods, have been imbued with strange magicks which permeate any item they touch.

Effect: Enhances the effectiveness of your equipped arm or tool.

Yeah, only info that I had on the armbands, were on my status page on SE members site, and I can't link that (got my code on it!).
Like the other bonus items, I'm sure they have limited use. Maybe not. Look cool though. I read only the initial production copies of FFXIII (PS3 version only I think) had the unique offer. I had almost forgotten about them til browsing thru these forums. I see people selling the codes on Ebay for a pretty penny. Maybe I should cash in too? :P
