Choose Starting CityFollow

#1 Jul 02 2010 at 8:44 AM Rating: Good
Had some time to kill and was looking at the 3 cities deciding which i would choose.

Ul'dah seems like a compact very fast paced wealthy city that might be very populated and busy.
I would like this but i often spend my time in quieter areas plus this city is near some desert which might be good for gaining points but still not another Bastok.

Limsa Lominsa is a spectacular series of elevated islands over the sea and seems to be a city of great production.
This one looks great with a pirate feel to it and you have big wooden ships beneath.

Gridania looks like my choice. Full of energy and magic surrounded by rich nature.
Peaceful but not dull, its looks great located between the other 2 cities.

This of course is all speculation from the pictures shown at SE's site.

I see Limsa with like a "Pirates of the Caribbean" Singapore feeling to it. A free port for all types, including scoundrels. Profitable to those with a bit of guile. The music I hear when I think of Limsa is erratic, random, and lively.

Gridania I see as an ancestral home of the "fair folk" type. Nature lovers and those that speak with the natural spirits. This, for me, would be the best place to spend my time while crafting. I can envision softer tones of music here.

When I think of Ul' dah I think of a fortress, the battle scarred, and the very rich. My vision shows me that, due to excessive wealth, the people here spend their time in the pursuit of leisure, whether that be in fighting or the arts. I think the music here will be structured, purposeful, with no exception to order.

Even though it's more isolated than the others and travel may be more difficult, I think I'll probably start in Limsa. I enjoy chaos and disorder. Especially when the disorder creates something more orderly than conscious structure can.

Of course all of this might change once we get more screen shots or videos of the towns. It sure is fun to use your imagination now though, before the possibilities are gone and existence takes it's place.

Which one is most like Windurst? By that I mean more naturesque and scenic... more fishing and harvesting oriented as opposed to Bastok (industrial) or SanDoria (too cold and polished).

I'm assuming Gridania will be the most like to Windurst.

Though I personally hope that they don't resemble any of the previous cities. A completely new flavor would please me to no end. :D

This might be silly but I'm going to start a character in each city right away. I'm curious if there will be a starting item that is useful associated with each city.

Bastok's ring was great!

Then there's the issue of layout, distance of Mog house to Auction House or the equivalent, etc. I found Bastok to have the edge on that as well over time. Then there's a prefrence of banner color/design to be factored in.

Silly, yes. But that's what I'm gonna do.

I definitely am going to start at Ul'Dah. I like the whole idea of making my way up from nothing in the big city.

Gridania would be my home choice so far as well. It would be cool if they added more video's and information on what to expect from the 3 starting cities. I see myself chilling in a forest type atmosphere while doing my woodwork for archery after long adventures elsewhere. This game is going to be EPIC!

No Mog houses, but there is a giant crystal that does the same with regards to storage at least. I can see them adding our lovely homes later, but at release, I don't think they will be included. Also, not sure if the AH is going to be there - we have retainers and until we get some kind of clarification on how that works...

But getting on topic and into the theme of the thread, I will be starting in the natural-looking place. The one that is most like windy! I hope you can pick your race, and can start anywhere like in ffxi. I was a Hume in a Taru world. And never wore a skirt o_O

I agree, but I did love the idea of races being from one city or another.

I am almost certainly going to be a Dunesfolk Lalafell and start in Ul'dah. I love the Arabic look to them. I can only hope there is more clothing along that theme.

me too~ i liked how each city had it's own race... it made visiting another city a little more interesting in some way~ but getting to choose your own has it's plus sides too ^^ i'll probably pick gridania because i'm a sucker for whimsical and more nature-ish landscapes

I think about half or so of players will start in Gridania. I guess I'll probably be there with them.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I think I am going to choose Limsa Lominsa. I haven't checked into the other 2 cities too much but it seems like Limsa Lominsa is going to be the place to be for some reason. Seems like there will be a lot happening. Just kind of wish the PS3 version was going to be released a bit sooner!

I didn't really need to see any actual shots of Gridania to know the theme was exactly what I was looking for. I think the descriptions provided will give you a good insight into the basic 'feel' of each city. That's what I based my decision on anyway.. honestly I think any layout for Gridania will be fine.. I don't like lots of stonework or desert. I <3 trees. Decision made lol.
