I just got a new computer. Downloaded the benchmark, downloaded and installed divX, ran the benchmark, the application crashes.

Intel i7 CPU, 960 @3.2G, 12.0 GM RAM, 64 Bit Windows 7, Radon 5870 video card.

Any ideas?

Update your video card drivers and get the latest DirectX directly from the Microsoft site. DivX has absolutely nothing to do with running games.

I mean direct X, not Div X - version 9 from the microsoft web site. Display drivers up to date.

I checked again. My computer actually shipped with Direct X 11.0. Might this be the problem? Should I downgrade it to 9.0?

don't worry about installing direct x or what not, windows 7 auto updates will do that for you, just install catalyst 10.6 and you should be fine. just make sure windows is up to date.

Windows 7 doesn't auto-update DirectX. And what's worse is a lot of games that auto-install DirectX for you actually overwrite the version you have with the version they shipped with, forcing you to go back and download the updated version again.

General rule of thumb with any new PC purchase is to find and install drivers for all of your hardware regardless of what it shipped with.

And no, you never downgrade DirectX. If you've got the latest version of DirectX 11, it includes the latest versions of 9 and 10 as well.

Every single time someone has posted that a machine that should be able to run the benchmark is crashing, they have resolved it by updating their drivers and DirectX. The people who have complained that it's still crashing are the ones who didn't install the right stuff to try and fix it, or they didn't do anything at all but said they did and then came back a couple of weeks later posting that they had updated their drivers and now it works.

Thanks everyone. Installed Catalyst 10.6 and that did the trick.

Scored 4701 in high res.
