I doubt it and certainly hope not. While steam has its advantages it often times does more harm than good, stability wise. The game would have to be tweaked to work off of steam and that really does not do well with some games.

SE isn't very cooperative with things like this (xbox live being somewhat of an example) so I really wouldn't count on it.

Why do people like playing games through steam so much? Seems like a big hindrance.

You can download games off of it, and play some games through it, which is basically an annoying system.

First off, the FFXIV and Xbox360 issue is microsoft's problem not SE's, Microsoft is unwilling to relinquish their Xbox Live subscriptions for the sake of having FFXIV.

Secondly i use steam mostly for my community / friends. I fail to see how it causes a hindrance or needs some overly complicated UI skin as an overlay of the game, shift+tab to bring up the steam community UI hardly seems like a major issue.

The fact that the majority of complaints about steam + ffxiv are basically " i don't like it so lets just not use it at all".

I for one like having a system in place that will automatically update my games and keep track of all my gamer friends what game they're playing and having an easy way to communicate with them. I don't see a downside here.

steam doesn't do anything to hinder the game. The only thing that it might do is the shift+tab combo to bring up an overlay so you can chat in game on full screen mode. Also tells you the time and some other things.

You can disable this or change the key to press, or key combo to press.

You don't have to be online to play games through steam, just have successfully logged on to steam at your computer.

In other words, it's free, it's easy to manage, generally well organized, offers great discounts on games (last week 50-75% off over 500 titles) and has almost all of the main stream titles that are on PC, with exception of games made by blizzerd.

Many of the games I've bought through steam I've had to contact customer service because they didn't work at all. In order for steam games to work it has to log into the steam server and use the program as a sort of platform. I'm not a fan of games that use another service to access it (Playonline anyone?) especially if it wasn't designed specifically for that since there's a good chance for errors. I do use steam though...they have some great deals on games sometimes that makes it worth using, even if I have to go through hoops to get half of them working.

But I suppose no harm is done releasing it on steam as long as I can still buy it regularly.

I agree Yog, was so annoying having to use some ridiculous system just to log into a game.

Easy fix, if you don't like that then switch Steam to Offline mode.

Steam is probably the best thing to happen to PC gaming in a long time. The people that don't like it are just ignorant.

While I wouldn't call it the best thing to ever happen I don't know where all the flak for it is coming from. Its a good digital distrubution service that has worked fine for me, it also sports a nice in-game instant message service. The deals are nice and while I don't see it really necessary for MMORPG's, I really like it for about everything else I use it for.

That doesn't change the fact that often times steam changes the game's interface with your system, sometimes making it unplayable without major tweaking.

I have no clue what you're speaking of? I've got about 40 games on Steam and when I get deployed I have to turn it to offline mode so I can play in the desert... Never had an issue with any software I have on Steam, on-line or off. I was also under the impression that if you change files on a Steam game manually you risk problems. I'm sorry you seem to have a bad experience with Steam. Overall I think it's a great thing for PC gaming. I honestly prefer Impulse since it's non-intrusive, but Steam has a bigger community and library to choose from so I mix and match depending on my expectations for a given title and if it's available on both platforms.

The only game I have had any issues running through steam was the original Bioshock. Never was able to actually finish the game because of it. That said, seeing as how FFXI is on steam now, it won't surprise me to see FFXIV on there also. Hopefully it is, and comes with a digital deluxe type collector's edition. Saves me the trouble of having to go through gamestop again.

I've only played a dozen games or so through Steam, but I've never had an issue. They have done some wonderful things for gaming, allowing access to all the classic DOS titles and giving independent studios an opportunity to distribute their software easily.

I think it not so much as playing through steam as it is convenience of not having to worry about where your disc's are. You buy the game through steam and never have to worry about a lost, damaged or incompatible disc.
I was really hoping they would go through steam as well and offer those who preordered it a spot in beta. Got my money ready for the Deluxe Ed.
