Back in FFXI, as superficial as it is, a big part of the reason I quit is because I was absolutely sick of my character. Many people made threads and suggestions to SE to allow us a chance to change our character's appearance, which I completely supported. Other games since have had systems where you could do so.

Aion: Paid character re-customization. Never stuck around long enough to see it. Probably a rip off.

WoW: Paid re-customization $25 Completely blank slate. Any name, race, gender, as long as within your faction.
*Barber shop: Change small features such as, fur color for taurens, horn size/color, hair color, earrings etc.
^This only cost a small ammount of silver or gold in game currency.

I would be happy with a barber shop type of system. I want my mi'qote gladiator to look rough and tough, but if in the future I decide to go all out on a conjurer, maybe I'd want longer hair. Why? I don't know I get bored looking at the same thing. There will be naysayers, but why? Why are people so vehemently against something so simple and convenient, costing only a small-moderate ammount of gil. Maybe you didn't have scars and then later you want to add a couple. Why not?

Opinions?

I don't care one way or the other, I'll probably never use it. It should be limited to hair and maybe minor characteristics though.

Yeah that's how the barber worked. Short or longer hair, diff colors, scars, etc. For example: Mi'qote should be able to change their warpaint,hairstyle/color,eye color, add scars. Paint is removable, hair is cuttable, extensions addable, contacts wearable (?), scars being added/removed is a bit unrealistic/rp but insignificant enough still.

Who is this person vehemently against barbershops?
O.o;

That's the most benign feature I can think of.

Well over the years, here and KI, people have started threads about how they wanted to change their characters appearance and would even pay to do so, even just to dye their hair. The responses were along the lines of "Go QQ get lost thats ***".

You know, even if you did think it was effeminate (which it's not).

Why "That's effeminate. That means it's ***. I don't want it" instead of "That's effeminate. Woman must want it. I want more women playing MMOs. Let's get behind that"?

How the deuce is working to perpetuate the sausagefest of your hobby the less *** option?

I don't think by "***" they meant homosexual/feminine. I think they were using the term loosely as in "PS3 rules, xbox is *** (lame)". I think perhaps the community was so frustrated with the content and issues with nerfing, etc., they considered an aesthetic option being added to the game to be a worthless topic. Perhaps they couldn't find the words to express that, so instead chose to label it as "***".

Either way I want this in the game :D

When implementing a feature, one must consider the positives and negatives.

The positives for a barber shop are not massive, but the negatives are nonexistent. It's a purely cosmetic change (that also serves as a money dump, for what it's worth) that has no downside to using (aside from costing a little coin, which... who cares?)

I see no reason why it couldn't or shouldn't be implemented, other than the fact that the character hair options seem extremely limited (Seriously; a page full of eye color/spacing and nose size/shape but still only 16 hair styles... why would you do this when hair style is the first thing you notice about someone after their gear and race; who cares how big your **** nose is?). And if "Go QQ get lost thats ***" is the best counterargument someone has... well, **** em.

I'd be against -total- character re-customization (especially race/gender change), paid or not, but I really don't see any downside whatsoever about a barbershop ingame.

Not trying to turn FFXIV in to Warcraft but in WoW one of the cool things about paying a few gold to get your haircut is that there were 2 new haircuts available for all races/genders available only through the barber. For example I got dreads on my troll and a mohawk on my orc.

I enjoyed my herbalist (flower-picking), purple pigtailed undead warlock.

It was especially nice in ilvl 232/245 headgear when I could actually SEE my pigtails again ***** hoods).

I dunno why I like the idea of a high output DD in pigtails.... I just do.

I always get Ice Cube and Ice T mixed up.

Ice T is on SVU, Ice Cube was in Friday.

I dunno why I always confuse them.

EDIT: Apparently Ice T is doing voice work for Gears of War 3.

I feel that all MMOs should have a barber shop in some way. It's completely win/win in my eyes. The in-game economy gets a money sink and players get to change their appearance. Everyone's happy!

I can't think of a single person in any of the threads over the years that was against recustomization. You might be thinking of the threads that also listed name changes and race changes, which I can think of a few reasons the XI population was against.

Name changes - because of the obvious Ninja item\Change name\Stay on server to Ninja another day

Race changes - because like it or not, races had different stats. They just did. Yes, you can make up for them with gear and merits later on in most cases, but the bottom line is that a Taru Black mage will always outperform a Galka Black mage, given equal gear\merits because of the natural base stats. So, people were against that too, because it would open up a whole new world of elitism - *you want to come into our shell as a mage? Go change your race to Taru first then reapply*.

Gender change? Well, I'm not going to get into the reasons people are paranoid about all that. Silly in a game, but people still being their religion into it.

I'd like to see the ability to change appearance in the game. Looking at the same ponytail for the past 5 years has really gotten.... Dreadfully boring.

Yeah, a barber shop is a nice idea, I guess I wouldn't go to the extreme of changing race and gender, but hair style, color and some facial features like marks, tattoos, piercings or beards seem like a good idea. After all in real life, this is all possible, so why not having it in a game and let us personalize and change our character look slightly to match our profession.

But yeah, Race, Gender, Name should always stay the same, even if I love to try all races and all looks, I wouldn't find it logical that one day you are a cat like lady and next day you are a tiny little guy.... wouldn't make much sense :P

And Name change might end up being confusing and scammers/evil people can clear their reputation by changing their name :P

I am totally for the idea of an in-game Barbershop. I'm with the OP in that after awhile I get tired of staring at the same face. After 4 months of dreads I want to look at a topknot for a few seasons instead. It is harmless and a good money sponge, as long as keeping it to basic cosmetic changes.

I wouldn't mind a barber that allows you to change your hair and other cosmetic details, however, I'm kinda against the race/gender.
Let's say your best friend plays with you FFXIV. You're used to see him as a Lalafell and everything, but suddendly, your friend becomes a giant hulk-like character that probably eats Tarus Lalafells for breakfast. Unless your friend's character took a bunch of hormones, it seems quite awkward, in my opinion.

100% in favor of minor aesthetic changes.

Slightly opposed to gender changes, but no strong feelings.

Extremely opposed to name/race change.

Plenty of modern MMOs today have barber shops and the such. It wouldn't make much sense for Square not to add these things, but then again this is Square we're talking about.

Cosmetics are fine to change, better if you can!

I'm against the Name or Race change for sure.

Changing gender?! *sigh*

More important is the respec. Setting all of you chosen abilties to 0 and re-picking where you want to spend points. Doesn't sound possible in FFXIV because you have to *earn* skill ups in each category.

For a level based system, where you choose where to put points each level, the ability to respec is very nice. You don't feel as if you have ruined your character by making bad choices. The merit system at least allowed you to remove points, but not to move them.

City of Heroes/Villians has a quest you go on to *earn* a full respec. Sacred 2 has no ability to go back at all, just start over or suffer.

If there are points to be assigned, I would hope there will be some way to change, or at least erase, your choices.

I have no issue with players being able to change their character appearance, race, whatever except I want there to be some sort of permanent handle associated with them. The most common use for changing character names and switching servers in games is doing something egregious to someone(s) and then running away from the consequences by completely changing the identity of their character.
