Let me give you some insight into why the playstation faction is so upset. For YEARS, quite literally, YEARS, they didn't make improvements to XI that many players wanted because they wanted to make sure that their core base - the Ps2 folks - were not left out. Some things were just beyond the system's capabilities. Some things they needed to develop workarounds for. Everything they did, centered around making sure that the weakest link in the chain didn't break.
Now, whether they *should* have or not is a discussion for another thread. I personally agree that the Ps2 held back development of XI and caused more problems than it solved.
However, going from that, to basically saying that the Playstation hardware is taking a back seat... Well I'm sure you can understand why some of us might be a little upset. They have done a 180 and started sprinting in another direction.
I don't see the issue as the specs aren't that high. Throw out your old PC and get a new one already.
Edit: Even my cheap *** laptop from a year ago can play FFXIV ffs, not that I would play it on it.
The listed specs might not be that high, but a lot of very good computers have bombed the benchmark, including mine. I have a PhenomII x4, 6 GB DDR3 1333, and a 1GB Gt220. No, it's not the best system in the world, but **** it there's no reason that it should have scored a 1257 on that benchmark. SE has gone to an extreme here that wasn't necessary.
FFXI, even as dated as it is, is a beautiful MMO. Maybe not on the Ps2 because of the hardware's limitations, but on a PC it's sharp, mature, and simply gorgeous. It's almost ten years old, to boot. Still looks better in every way compared to more successful MMOs - like WoW.
Really, they are focusing far too much on the graphical side of things when what people really want is a gaming experience that is fun and exciting. They don't have to string together 10 Ps3's, hack the pentagon, and launch the world into a time warp just to bring us an exciting game.
If WoW is proof of ANYTHING - it's that the graphical appeal isn't as integral a part of an MMO's success as other elements.
SE just loves to go out of their way to alienate the playerbase. Makes no sense to me, at all.
