Short beta test?Follow

FFXIV just started its beta test, and it's coming out in less than three months. Meanwhile, The Old Republic just started theirs, and they're not coming out for six months, or probably more.

How to explain the difference in time? Is it a different approach to testing, the companies just have different philosophies about what a beta test is for? Or was FFXIV a more finished product when it went to beta? Or could Square (cross your fingers it's not so) be planning to ship a slap-dash product and then fix it on the fly?

I'm not trying to dump on the game or start a flame war, I'm just interested in what people think (though if my memories of Allakhazam's FFXI forums are any guide, every post starts a flame war no matter what it's about).

Short (guess) answer; Alpha has probably been going extremely well, and hence it's extension. So much, that the game is near release quality, and not in dire needs of a long Beta. Just reading these forums alone shows that SE listened well during Alpha, to get to this point. Do I think FFXIV will come out "slapped together"? No. Sure, it will have bugs, but that's completely understandable.

The public alpha test was part of the "beta testing." They only called it "alpha" to avoid making the game sound too finalized. So when you factor that in, the beta will last approximately 4-5 months. That's a pretty realistic beta testing period and I believe it's longer than what FFXI had.

Alpha lasted as long as it did because it took awhile for them to fix problems because new ones rose when old ones were fixed. Alpha was indeed an Alpha version of the game, anyone who has keen eyes can tell it was a very primitive version of the game.

They wanted to move to beta a lot quicker than they did, but they wanted to make sure the servers were stabilized before so. Beta will last until more than likely a few weeks before the retail goes out.

From what I understand, Beta is probably going to go very close to release day/week. Open beta at least... if there will be one... will be a few days before 9-22.

S-E does a Lot of testing in-house.

They're basically using the Alpha/Beta to get feedback for the gameplay and test server stability.

Meanwhile, other companies use the beta to market their game and find out bugs and glitches.

I think that's the biggest difference.

I don't know what "short" means relatively, but as perspective, the game comes out in less than 11 weeks.

In all likelihood, the first few months of "live" will pretty much be like ongoing beta.

This seems most accurate to me.

Technically, an "alpha test" is conducted internally as a form of acceptance testing. What SE calls an alpha was really just the first stage of the beta test.

Just remember how long this game has been in development, Five years. I'm pretty sure SE has done so much in house Alpha before anyone even knew the game existed. They had a completly different fighting style for the Alpha version then they do for Beta. They allready knew they were going to use the Beta fighting style. They said that when the Alpha began.

Will the game have some problems at start, Yes. What MMO doesn't. Thousands of people in one area, I bet their will be Server maintinance a couple hours after FFXIV goes live on the 22nd and the 30th.

This game will be the best MMO out on the market to date. But hay, thats just my opinion.

I think it's a couple of things.

1) Yeah they basically called the closed beta 'alpha'. So they have a closed beta then a shorter open beta.

2) I do think they cut the open beta short to get the jump on Blizzard. I think however they decided to do it because they felt that it really would be ready in time. They're smart enough to know if it goes live and it's horribly buggy, it could kill what could be franchise that makes them hundreds of millions of dollars. I think they realize that if they can get people into FFXIV right now while people are off the WoW but before they all jump on the Cataclysm AND their game is really good, they might permanently convert a lot of people. As much as they say it, there's no avoiding the fact that if you're trying to reach the MMO player market, WoW is always going to be competition.

There won't be a open beta for PC as for ps3 beta it will be available for PSN + users.

Why do you think the PS3 Beta will only be fore PSN+ users? Its a square enix product not a Sonny. SE would want everyone to try the game so they could get hooked on it.

The Beta is probably just going to be testing the servers and fixing minor bugs. The game is probably mostly done.

True, I remember reading in the E3 interviews that the game is really near finished, their major problem during the alphas was the random disconnects and server instability. I remember reading that the graphic part was all finished, there was just some coding to do.

I am sure many bugs will show during the Beta, but they got a big team that is always working on it, so I guess time means nothing when their team works hard :P

Hopefully everything goes smoothly and they are not forced to delay the release over some important unfixed problem. Anything can happen...

Early access for PSN+ users in the same vein as early demo access on xbl gold probably.

Personally I think no open beta is suside. Sure beta testers are nice and all and help with bugs. But even then when the game is released to the masses, people find bugs that beta testers missed. I for one do not want the servers going down daily for them to fix bugs. They need to have a open beta at least a month before the game goes like to ensure a smooth launch. SE has one shot to impress people< if the game is too buggy or unstable people will just quit the game and never look back!

Seeing as we've brought it up. Can we really be sure you'll need PSN+ to be in the beta. I've already applied through official site for PS3 and would be a tad ****** if I got an email saying "Congrats you've been selected.. Fork over some cash to Sony so we will late you play it"

I know they said you'd have opportunities for betas... But something you've already applied for? I dunno. I say I don't buy it... But I probably would get the PSN+ if they told be it was necessary.

Nobody knows this for a fact. They're just speculating (at best).

Really? I would've thought it would take them quite while to print out and box up all the copies of the game... I dunno how many they're gonna make for the initial release, but it's gotta be a lot.

Really, five years? :O I guess they'd be horribly incompetent if they didn't have it almost done after that long... And whatever SE is, they're not incompetent.

What's impressive, to me, is that they started on it 5 years ago, and it's 10x more beautiful graphically than any other MMO out there. It's more beautiful than future MMOs! It's going to blow ToR out of the water, and that's not coming out for another year! Though a pack of drunken teenagers could beat WoW graphically, with its life-size cartoons for characters.

Well, now I feel like a sucker for preordering the limited edition. I get 8 days early access, but I have to weather the initial launch's server instability ;_; But I refuse to wait, I don't wanna! >.< Though having a tiered open like this is smart, first they let a limited number of people on, and charge them for the privilege. And then they open the floodgates a week later after they've got the initial stability issues taken care of.

Remember SE is known for a lot of in house testing and private testing otherwise. So don't expect to have a long beta with an SE MMO ever.

EVERY MMO UPON RELEASE HAS HAD SOME KIND OF ISSUE. EVERY. SINGLE. MMO. NO EXCEPTIONS.

As far as what you last quoted in regards to server stability and the "1000 people in 1 spot ZOMG SERVER OVER LOAD SELF DESTRUCT IN 3...2...1...(BOOOM)". There's an interview floating about that states that SE's "closed beta" is mostly for testing server stability and getting the last few flaws that they can before release.

What i'm getting from FFXIV is that SE is aiming to topple WoW so those 5 years have been devoted to making the best MMO thus far with the best launch.

You will NOT be needing the PSN Plus subscription to play FFXIV. Read up on it and all the developer Q&A's you'll find that it's the reason why Xbox won't be getting FFXIV because Micro$oft wants their subscription fees without having to give up access to the MMO scene for not having Xbox Live.

They can have all the copies made up and ready and just release the results of the last beta testing through a release-day patch.
