The Final Fantasy series has a long and rich history from which the developers can pull many beloved characters and themes. With each new installment, many fans wait anxiously for the quote or screenshot that reveals their favorite icon will appear once again. Some are borrowed from the page of history, and others crafted from the imaginations of creators at Square Enix. All of them, however, have changed and developed over the 20-plus years since the series' inception.

As we look back, we hope to show long-time fans how Eorzea has been shaped by these influences while newcomers may gain some insight as to why these aspects of Final Fantasy are so special.

Today we look at Gil!

Fantastic read, Elmer! The depth here is what really makes the article.
If you ever need someone else to do a write up, let me know, Reading an article like this makes me miss writing myself.

Thanks for the read Elmer, very well researched. I'm glad to hear that gil will be the standard currency again. There's just something comforting about the familiarity of all these Final Fantasy trappings, you know?

At first, and this is way back when, I didn't like the "change" from the common "Gold Pieces" which most RPGs use to "Gil" and always wondered what the purpose of renaming the currency was.

This article is pretty interesting in that it explains how there never really was a change; it was just a translation abbreviation that was eventually redone the way it was intended.

Very cool article! Personally, I always thought "Gil" came from the word "gilt".

Thanks for all the feedback on the articles!

We could always use some interesting articles to keep the front page flowing. If you have any ideas, send them our way!

Thanks an interesting theory I missed. It actually makes some good sense, too, so I'm going to sneak it in there with credit to you.

LebargeX:
Cid is definitely a character to take a look at. I don't think we've seen him in FFXIV yet, so we may have to wait a bit.

A recurring character in the Final Fantasy series, or more accurately, a recurring name for a prominent character. Cid is never the same person, but someone important is always named Cid.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I don't think making Gil more readily available will make a whole lot of difference. It all depends on the prices of the shops, bazaars, and other places. Also, the Auction House makes the most difference when talking about how much something is worth, since it is something that is more like the stock market, where prices rise and fall everyday due to demand and other such forces, such as the people themselves. So it's all really supply and demand based, and even if there is more gold, it doesn't mean things will cost less and be easier to get, because the people will decide what the things are worth in the end. This is assuming they keep the auction house, which I'm pretty sure they are.
