How long of a life span do you think FFXIV will have? This isn't 8 years ago when there were just a few mmorpgs. There are plenty out there with new mmorpgs being released all the time. I really hope FFXIV really has what it take for a long term life span, other wise this game is going to die quick. 2 huge mmorpgs comming out are Star Wars and Fallout mmorpg both of them have a huge following. And who knows what other mmorpgs will be released in the next 8 years!

I always had the impression that FFXI was like the red-headed stepchild of the MMO world, and so, a kind of niche game. It definitely stood out (for good or bad) from everything else. If FFXIV is similar, I see it lasting a long time, maybe 7+ years because while it never had massive numbers, it always had a nice, core group of players to keep it viable.

I'll say one thing though, if the community for FFXIV is like the community for FFXI was, they're gonna have to pry the servers from the hands of the ravenously insane players (or make the next online FF) before they let it die. ^^

Here's to your long, glorious adventure, FFXIV!

I'd say (if it starts off well like FFXI did) about 5 years before numbers start to dwindle. Then a couple years after that they announce Final Fantasy 17 Online for PC and PS4.

Lets just say, that FF is more of a game for the one who likes it. Here over in Europe, you got Charts from MMORPG, where FFXI isnt even listed....wonder why...

But what i wanna say, FF doesnt have a large player base like WoW or War, so it will probably last a long time, at least till the next new gane is announced..

The real question is, what is going to happen with FFXI in September, are they shutting the game down, after a lot of players are leaving to play FFXIV?

The Fallout MMORPG? That won't be coming out until 2012, if it even gets released at all. A lot of the info swirling around the lawsuits involved suggest the game hasn't made a whole lot of progress.

Either way, I think the base demographic for both games is a little different than that of FFXIV. The game should last fairly long if FFXI can be counted on as an example.

I'd only played FFXI for about 3 years then switched to WoW. I think the style of MMORPG has been changing throughout the years. When XI came out, I remembered there wasn't that many big names MMORPG out there, and the style of most MMORPG were level up to the cap level then start grinding the gears. The level up process was like 70% of the game play, and yet, I did think it's "fun" back then. Until new MMOs came out like WoW, the style changed from "leveling up is consider playing the game" to "leveling up is just a process of getting familiar with the job, the game actually started after you hit the level cap". I really hope FFXIV would bring us a brand new style of MMORPG and game play experience.

If it has a lot of the awesome things that FFXI had and does not have all the bad things(like being ridiculously hardcore), then i give it probably 5-7 years before numbers start dwindling.

Personally if it turns out as good as i want then i hope it will last a lot longer... but who knows in todays games.

Fallout MMORPG.

2012.

I think this is what the Mayans forsaw when they saw the end of the world and everyone dying. Their vision was just unspecific.

Also, what lawsuits?
