My disappointment in starting in march aside, this thread is not about that. My own dilemma, and question to the rest of you, is will you be reading as much material as you can, watching as many videos as you can, and studying as many guides/faq's as you can after the game has launched for PC?

Do you want to know all the info that PC'ers have found out in the first 6 months of the game, or would you prefer to be completely oblivious to it, and take your first steps into Eorzea completely ignorant of what others have discovered?

This is my dilemma. When I started playing FFXI, I bought it on a whim. I'd never watched game play videos, read any articles, or checked out any forums. So when I first started out, everything was so new to me. I feel like I'll have more fun if my adventures in Eorzea start out the same way. I'll probably join in on the forums a few weeks after launch, but I want to live in the blind for a short while.

How about you?

I have to confess that I'm a PS3 player, but as soon as I knew the PS3 version is coming out 6 months after the PC version, I upgraded my computer and am ready for the PC version.

As for your question, I would read as much material as I can before I start the game, but not the video (maybe trailer, but definitly not the gameplay videos). I like to get myself well prepared before I start a game, especially a MMORPG. I don't like to go through all the classes/jobs/races to start a MMORPG, then decide which one I like the most after leveling up all of them to a certain level. I like to read all the goods and bads about each class, then compare them and find the one that I like the most and stick with it until I hit the level cap. Then start another class if I want to.

The delay of the Ps3 makes me nervous. The reports I am hearing out of folks I know are in the beta make me even more nervous. It just doesn't seem to have the level of polish it should for a game that is set to release in two months.

While I would like to get in right at the start with everyone else, I can't help but feel like I shouldn't pay for a half-assed product by SE anymore. I did that with XIII, I'm largely still doing it with XI, and I just can't justify doing it with XIV. I think I'll just be watching closely to see if people really talk up the release. If they do, there will be plenty of time to drive to Gamestop to pick up a copy. If they don't, then nothing of value will have been lost and by the time Ps3 version comes around the game will probably have the polish it should have had now.

*shrugs.

I just think they are making one bad business decision after another with this one.

No. Wait, yes. What's the question again?

Are you kidding me? Of course, I'm going to absorb everything there is to find. I can't even avoid the compulsion to come here for the lastest little smidge of news.

It would take a disciplined person indeed to be a FF fanatic and simultaneously avoid every FF fansite in an effort to maintain the brand new MMO experience.

On the other hand, I purposely don't watch the trailers. So, yes, I'll avoid gameplay videos. No, I don't plan to avoid reading the players' feedback.

Well, I'll be reading feedback, what people like/dislike about the game or specific classes. But I don't want to know anything about storyline or guildleve quests, nor would I like to see pictures of gear or landscape. I want all of that to be fresh.

If you played many MMos on release day, you would know that absolutly NONE are polished products, that comes in the months following release. So if thats the only complaint they have, it will turn out quite well.

If I had to wait 6 months to play a MMO, I'd not play it at all, for some reason I don't buy MMOs thats been out for even a few months. :p

That's a big problem for me. My wife and I have been wavering on whether to upgrade our desktop enough for us to join our friends that will be signing up on PC release, and split our online time between each other, or wait with the group of friends forced to bide their time til PS3 release (and each have a system ready to go).

Honestly, I can think of plenty of things I could distract myself with while waiting for my friends. The problem is, I've been regularly searching for news about this MMO for several years now... ever since I heard about the mysterious "Project Rapture" years ago. I've been tracking news and contributing to theories about the game on various forums since the E3 '09 reveal. Keeping up with news about XIV has become part of my weekly routine. But sharing rumors and tidbits with dedicated fans isn't the same as reading about actual gameplay and story spoilers for six months. If we wait, I'd hate to have much of the mystery revealed before I have the opportunity to explore on my own, but at the same time the idea of sequestering myself away from the forums for half a year is also very unappealing. :(

It's a real dilemma... and I honestly don't know what I'll do if we decide to wait. The whole situation just sucks.

I'll be doing what I can to check on how things are going, probably checking the job and craft related stuff. I definitely will be staying away from any spoiler related info though

If I wasn't planning on getting both versions, and I had to wait for the PS3 release, I would still be ravenous for gameplay videos and such, but I wouldn't look things up in wikis. I'd rather my first few days be clueless, innocent, and sparkly...

...I have all the time in the world to actually get dragged into the "this is how you're supposed to play" mentality. Here's hoping it takes me a few years to submit to that.

I think a lot of people who compare the polish of FFXIV with FFXI forget that FFXI was a year old by the time we (english speakers) got it.

Edit: Supposed I should say something relevant to the thread as well :p I was planning on getting it on PS3 and then downloading the client for PC so I will have it for both, now though I am buying it on PC and am hoping a friend gets the PS3 version I can borrow to install.

I just want to know what all the starting cities and surrounding areas look like since that will play a big part on where I choose to start. Right now it's Gridania but thats not set in stone. I also plan to stay far far away from FAQs/Guides/Wikis.
