FF14 Equivalent to Subjobs and Skill ChainsFollow

Hi Everyone. I previously played FF11 and just started reading about FF14. The parts of FF11 I really enjoyed were the flexibility of the classes by changing subjobs and the teamwork necessary to complete skill chains.

I know you can change classes by switching weapons in FF14 but will the abilities of one class, for example Gladiator, still be available for me when I switch to 2H Axe as a Maurader? Will there be a level limit similar to your subjob abilities being restricted to half the main job's level?

Also, will there be some sort of skill chains and magic bursts where additional damage is done by working together as a team?

Thanks ahead for your help.

So far what I've read from people with experience/interviews:

Equipping a specific weapon changes your class. So let's do an example.

I want to make a gladiator, but I want chakra. Pugilist has chakra @ level 6

I equip some claws and level Pugilist to level 6, yay I have chakra.

I now equip a sword/shield to play gladiator.. but oh noez where's my chakra?!

Oh I'm only level 1. Level Gladiator to level 6 (weapon level?)

There's the chakra.

Plus whatever abilities you have on gladiator at this point.

*Someone please correct this if I'm wrong.

I think that's how they've described it to work thus far, accept you'll have points to allot on which abilities you get to use, somewhat like how Blue Mage works in FFXI now.

"I have it on good authority" that it works similarly to blue mage. I can't say for certain at what point you're permitted to equip an ability that requires higher levels, but I may consult the same "good authority" and get back to you.

Thanks for the information everyone. Seems like there is still a lot unknown.

Does anyone know if all abilities of a level 6 pugilist will be available to a level 6 gladiator? I remember there being some abilities that could only be used if it was your main class.

It seems, based on what I've been told, that the mana restoration abilities of casters are limited to the specific class as are the non-mp using ranged attacks (think "wanding," if you're familiar with Warcraft). Otherwise, I've been told that the spells themselves may be used with whatever other class you chose to equip it with, at reduced effect, which is to be expected.
