Two perky idols from Morning Musume, Ai Takahashi and Linlin, stopped by the Square Enix offices to try out something new -- an online game! Producer Hiromichi Tanaka and Director Nobuaki Komoto sat them down in front of Final Fantasy XIV to give it a test run and share their impressions.

What are they holding in the last picture, and where can I get one?

It doesn't say what they were holding. My best guess would be a mousepad, though they look a little thicker than that.

Vicks and Wedge, if you're oldschool.

Also, Biggs and Wedge weren't even in every game. They didn't show up for the first time till 6, (Vicks and Wedge were in Chrono Trigger too, I believe) they weren't in 9, they weren't in 11, and they weren't in 12. I don't know if they were in 13.

I hate to be Uber-Nerd, but in Final Fantasy 12 they were Gibbs and Deweg.

OMG!!!!!!

So I'm sure no one noticed, but I mentioned in another thread earlier today that I was a Jpop fan... and Morning Musume from Hello! Project (which Ai-chan and LinLin, as we call them, are from) is like the major group in my fandom! XD I got a twitter from my fansite (non-FFXIV-related) about this article, and when it redirected me to ZAM I was like "holy @#$%!!!"

*calming down*

Okay... lol. So. Some here may have noticed, but Takahashi Ai (Ai-chan), who is also leader of Morning Musume and Hello! Project (the umbrella "idol factory" over groups such as Morning Musume), has actually become quite a covergirl for SqEnix and the Final Fantasy series, as she did many promotional events and broadcasts for FFXIII's Japan release. It would be awesome if she did XIV as well! Though as you can tell from the interview, I don't believe she has played a MMO before (her pop idol schedule likely leaves her too busy for the timesinks ;)). However, she's been playing FF games since she was a little girl, since her parents were into them as well. LinLin was brought into the group a couple years ago as their first international member along with JunJun, also from China. She's known as a big anime fan, but hasn't done any promotion such as this for FF or SqEnix up to this point.

I'd say it's very possible Ai-chan or maybe LinLin as well could participate in promotion for FFXIV in the future as well (albeit promotion in Japan), so look for them again sometime!

If there is a Takahashi Ai NPC or mob put into the game, you can bet I'll be camping it round the clock. ;) Then again, there'll likely be many Japanese otaku with the same idea... haha.

To me, their responses seemed as if they were reading from a teleprompter. Like they were rehearsing their lines for about an hour before they did the interview. Very boring read, in my opinion.

A surprisingly exciting read! Linlin is Chinese and that point is mentioned a few times, saying she'd love to play with other Chinese and that FF has lots of fans in China. Perhaps she was chosen to generate a buzz in the Chinese community?

I liked her comment on silver haired characters, makes me see this interview as authentic hahah.

Man, I hope Linlin's wish comes true

Takahashi, what kind of people would you party with?

Takahashi: Americans. I really like English, so it would be awesome to practice my English conversation skills while playing a game.

Takahashi-san, I will be your English conversation partner! Although I think Morning Musume is sort of past their prime, they're still a genki group of girls :)

Creeeeep. Yes. I once saw a "real" MM fan at Tokyo Gameshow. Oblivious to the world (and his balding 50-year-old skull and the whitish wrinkles where other people store their sixpacks) he kept on para-para dancing in perfect alignment with the 12-year-old marketing lolitas on the vidscreen. That's something hard to forget - and thus a constant reminder that even being sucked up into the virtual world I so dearly love has its limits.

Btw, the thing they are holding is one of the FFXIV mousepads that was also available at Gamescom in Germany. Want one? - make your offer.

These idols bring back memories of getting photos of myself taken with the hottest mithra girls on the planet at E3 2006 Boss Battle Bash.

I still have those photos. Lap dancing Mithra = Happy Me!

It's true, Morning Musume otaku (wota, as they/we are called) can obsess over their hobby at least as much (and for a longer time) as some of the most hardcore MMO players. They'll travel all over the country going to concerts, events, what have you. The idol world offers a lot to follow and well, the Japanese really love cuteness. ^^

Although of course, we're not all fans to that extent, and I've met many wonderful and interesting people being a part of this fandom, just like while playing MMOs. Last year they came to Anime Expo in LA, their first time in America, and there was a huge gathering of North American fans there.

It's also true Morning Musume is likely past their prime in Japan... and perhaps even further down than that lol. By need or not though, they've begun spreading out their appeal, such as adding the Chinese group members and doing more international events. Also there are things like Ai-chan getting involved with Final Fantasy promotion as if she's some kind of anime (mithra? XD) princess. I wonder what people would think if she dressed up as a mithra (or Mi'qote! :D) like the girls Papanurf mentioned... lol.

Anyone else get the impression that the guys at SE don't get to see many attractive women? I just chuckled at the guys in the background on the fourth picture down - they look like they are in heaven. It's definitely not the screens they are looking at.

Anyway, this was a good test - take a couple of people who aren't really familiar with games and see what happens. The comments that stood out to me were regarding the battle system - how they didn't really get it at first. I've heard so many things about the battle system since the announcement of the game and I really wish they would just figure it out already. It really should be intuitive - it doesn't need to be overly complex to be exciting.

Also - while I appreciate a good sense of humor, this comment just irked me

Komoto wrote:
We may get to it in about 5... no, maybe 3 years. (laughs)

This continues to be a huge issue for XI players and requests that have been made and it sounds like SE knows full well they aren't delivering.

I don't know, man. I tend to have a hard time believing any "reviews" from celebrities. Especially during interviews.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Is he trying to hint that there's going to be in-game marriage in Final Fantasy XIV as well? :x

I sincerely hope not. Everyone will be far better off if they just leave it out of the game entirely. Far too much controversy and drama will ensue no matter what they do with it.

Marketing brilliance!

"Look! Even smoking hot girls like FFXIV!"

They are marketing to girls, guys - and showing off that you will enjoy FFXIV even if you've never played an MMO before. Nicely done Tanaka and Komoto.
