(i.e coudl i walk around teh entire world on foot and fight things aliong teh way if i choose, or do you HAVE to use guildleves to get around)?

You might be confusing guildleves with Aetherite. Guildleves are essentially ffxiv's version of quests and nothing more.
Aetherite, however, does let you teleport around (one of its many functions). You can use any node to warp to any other aetherite you've previously been to. So, yes you do have to walk around the world on foot. SE has also hinted at some kind of mount but we don't know much about it yet.

Hope that was helpful.

According to the ffxiv site:

Guildleves are small, rectangular plates made of stained crystal set into a frame of precious metal, each depicting a virtuous deed of one of Eorzea’s patron saints, also known as “guardians.”

To my understanding, it's more like you get a quest from a npc, then the npc would give you one of these guildleves that has serves different purposes. For example, maybe players are not allow to get into a house in one of the cities, but after accepting or finishing a quest, the quest npc would give this guildleves which works like a pass to enter the house, and you'll find that there're special vendors inside this house selling gears that aren't being sold anywhere else.

People who haven't played the game should have a decent idea of this anyway, but not everyone who has played the game is actually in the beta test. Some of us have played NDA-free public demos.

Of what I've seen, it's similar to Assaults-- you get a quest from a counter NPC, only rather than warping to an instance, you go to an Aetheryte and activate an open-world instanced battle. i.e., everyone is there, but the leve mobs are just for you and your group.

There's also a teleport feature that teleports you to certain Aetheryte (presumably only ones you've been to).

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.
