Was a keyboard needed in FFXI or was the ps2 controller well built, cause im wondering how the controller will be for ps3 since its wat im gonna be playing on.

You'll definitely want a keyboard to program your macros and chatting with people.

The rest should be fine with a PS3 controller if you prefer that.

FFXI was more designed around the controller than the keyboard and from what I hear FFXIV is similar in that respect.

It, like many things, is a matter of personal preference. Both my roommate and I played FFXI, him on PS2, and myself on PC, when he would dual box, he hated using the keyboard to control my character, and I in return hated using the PS2 controller when I was using his character.

So it really comes down to what you like, and what you get used to, FFXIV I'm sure is being made with a controller in mind, and therefore will work fine if you like using a controller, there is no advantage, or disadvantage to using either. Though like mentioned above, you will likely want to have a keyboard, simply for writing macro's (if that is in the game at all) and for chatting with other people.

I'm really wondering whether or not I'll choose controller over keyboard for my experience of FFXIV. I played FFXI on a keyboard and mouse (although the mouse was really only used for camera rotation)... so it is my first preference but I'll be playing it on PS3 in my living room on my comfy couch and not a computer desk. Wondering how I'll feel keeping a keyboard and mouse tucked away in my gaming center and then putting them on my coffee table while I play.. I can feel my back aching now. The controller would of course be easier to hold while i'm sitting on the couch but would hinder my abilities to communicate or access multiple job abilities with ease.

I'll probably end up going with a wireless keyboard / track pad combo and sitting "Indian Style" on the couch or stacking up some old board games until I've created the same seat:desk height ratio I'm accustomed to while I type... Oh.. the insanity of it all!!! I hadn't even considered this!!!

I use a X-Box 360 controller and a keyboard that uses a USB input. I put the keyboard on my lap relax an the couch when i play, It's really comfortable. I bought an extension for my USB cord so it reaces me when i sit on the couch. A ten foot cord cost 10 bucks or around that.

Remember the PS3 is bluetooth so you can buy a wireless keyboard for it, I was thinking about getting one but i didn't feel like dumping money into batteries for it.

The life span on batteries in a BT keyboard usually range in the 3-6 month area. I wouldn't rule them out for that reason alone. The downside of most wireless keyboards is the latency ... there are very few models that don't have an appreciable pause before your keystroke registers on screen.

So when are you going to stop coming here and whining about how you feel you got screwed because the PS3 version gets released later? You're ******* off so many people, I think your posts are starting out sub-default anyway.

Er.. for me it was a matter of comfort. I was raised on game consoles and moving my character with keys was just odd to me. I found no difficulty in pulling up my many books of macros, no did I ever feel disadvantaged for my use of a controller. Why would using a keyboard be superior, now I am curious as to your feelings of awesomeness.

To OP, in my opinion it's really a matter of comfort. I used the keyboard and a 360 controller with a wireless adapter on my laptop. It served me well for many years. However, like many have said before you really NEED a keyboard of some sort to communicate with people ;]

I was under the impression the controls for FFXIV are identical to XI, bar a few extra functions, i.e. more comfortable with a controller, awkward but manageable with a keyboard and mouse. Of course don't forget that the PS3 controller has that keyboard attachment thing (pricey, but very handy).

Most of my time on FFXI was behind desk. This time I have my little gaming cave with a comfy futon. I may try out a game pad but most likely I'll be using keyboard and mouse. Normally I just arrange my pillows and such until I find a comfortable position. I use an old year book for my mouse pad. Granted once I find the spot I tend not to move for long periods of time...

That's the best retort you can come up with? I point out how you're acting like a whiny child, and you respond by acting like a whiny child? Nice try, kid.

Guess you never played FFXI. IMO the game is better with a controller. Its very awkward with the keyboard. I understand where you're coming from but FFXI (and probably XIV) are different from other MMOs in that respect. Dont get me wrong though, you can become a pro at using both methods of control... its just not really shocking when someone says they use a Playstation Controller Adapter to play FFXI on their PC.

And to the guy who called it a "noob stick", oviously you never gave it a try. Its a very fluid experience to play the game with a controller (namely a PS2/PS3/Xbox controller since the game was designed for it). I actually hated the keyboard + mouse option, found it very awkward.

I do personally prefer keyboard and Mouse myself. *But* never tried controller, so I'll give it a shot...

I have a Newb question: (LOL 1st post)

Is it confirmed the PS3 servers and PC servers will be integrated? I only Bench marked 2347 on the low benchmark (wasn't full screen) So I'm thinking I'd get a better experience from my PS3, but my husband will be undeniably playing on his PC, and obviously it's rubbish if we can't play together.

And another Newb question, obviously the PS3 will take a keyboard, will it also take a mouse for this game? If I start playing the PC version 1st (so I don't have to wait 3 months and get that sweet collector's edition) but then switch to my PS3 later, it'd be nice to have the option of completely keeping my old controls if I can...

I apologise if this was obviously answered, only premium members can Forum search.

I really hope the majority of the controls are the same. That would really help make the new game feel like home. :-p

I did play with the keyboard exclusively, and just wanted to mention that if you're using the mouse, you're doing it wrong. The keyboard can do anything the mouse can aside from instantly selecting a single target amongst a group (which never seemed to work well for me anyway). One caveat is that it is a lot easier to move in first-person mode when using the keyboard.

I actually started playing FFXI through my ps2 and used the ps2 controller. I thought it was very comfortable and getting to my macros was very simple. The only difficulty I had was communicating to people through text. I will start to play FFXIV on pc but since my pc scored poorly on the benchmark I will end up buying the ps3 version when it is released. I was thinking of buying the wireless Keypad for the controller but I don't know how well it works. Has anyone used it and if so did you like it?

Whether Keyboard or Controller is / was better is wholly a matter of preference, unique to each individual.

I can tell you with certainty that you do not need a controller to play FFXIV.

There will be many for whom the game feels more natural with a gamepad, and many who feel more comfortable with a keyboard. I will, in all likelihood, use a combination of both, depending on the situation.

As for the current state of affairs with which is superior, from the *VERY TRUSTWORTHY* rumors I've heard, gamepad is much more user friendly for camera operation at the moment, while keyboard is more comfortable for a) typing, of course, and b) keybound ability use. Regarding point b, if you recall from FFXI, if you played on a keyboard you just used the Alt + # keystroke to start your ability; with a gamepad, you had to execute several keypresses to get to your selected macro ability. I would *most assuredly* assume that such will be the case with FFXIV.

As for mouse, from what I've gathered, it's supposedly very clumsy at this point, to the extent that it is barely useful (if at all).

So I take it he left after he hit the "Post Message" button. Well, glad that's over! Back to FFXIV talk!

As things stand now I'm actually going to be using a PS2 controller. Already ordered an adapter, in fact. I just can't do without my netplay controller, and if I have to take it up the rear for someone at Logitech to get to work on an updated model, well, just tell me where to bend over.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I used both in FFXI. Pretty much used the keyboard when I'm on a team and grinding. I used a PS/2 USB controller when I needed to run several zones.

I'm having a problem getting my PS3 controller to work... was hoping someone might have an idea what the problem is.

I'm using Motionjoy and following the guide @ http://blogs.ign.com/Blogs/Comments.aspx?blog=winter123&entryid=139479 to set it up, but when I get to the part that specifies what driver to use (Motionjoy's), Windows tells me it already has the best driver being used... crappy Microsoft's.

How can I bypass this stupid big brother crap and get microsoft to use the motionjoy driver?

I'm in a specific situation right now, but I have to say after ALWAYS using a keyboard and mouse in every single PC game that I've owned (except for emulators), I went to just keyboard in the beta and it is 100% better. The mouse is practically useless.

However, (after a bunch of debate) I might spring for a PS3 controller a bluetooth module and (eventually) the compatible wireless mini keyboard, and see how it works.

Just by using the UI you can tell that a joypad would be easier. Oh well.
