I'm thinking of leveling gladiator and conjurer roles.. From what I understand in the field i can put away my sword and pull out my wand as long as i'm not in combat. and poof I go from a gladiator to a conjurer. but what about my armor does it just fall off back into my inventory or can I be a conjurer running around in full plate ?

There are class and level(rank?) limits on armor, so no you can't run around in full plate as a mage haha. You're going to have to lug around a full set of gear for any class you want to be able to quickly switch to in the field. Although I do suspect that if you want to switch to conjurer just to quickly heal yourself and then switch back to gladiator, you'll be able to do that and only need the wand to do it.

Ok that's good. I'm kinda glad that mages will be in more mage like apparel, the whole Wizard Atmosphere would be kinda destroyed if mages ran around in plate just because it had better stats.

Thanks

I dont think SE will let you change your class so fast that you can cure/use other job ability the moment you want to change it, i guess it would be something like a 30second cooldown before you can change your class, something like desync party in FFXI i assume.

undoubtedly so. given how XI operates, i would be very shocked if they allowed a situation as in the OP. There is defiantly going to be a cool down period between switching jobs I would assume.

There's been no talk of a between job cool down, and more allusions away from it than to it. I'm guess that as long as your no in active mode (in combat) class switching is fair game.

I think I read somewhere that if you switch class your stats will be lowered for sometime like 30 seconds.

I understand the whole, "equipment = job" thing...well, kinda understand it. Anyway, have they ever given us the idea that we'll have the ability to change in the field? Did an Alpha tester leek this? As far as I know, we're still going to be limited to changing in our Mog house, but I'm only basing that on not being able to find any information on it.

I know it makes sence to be able to switch gear in the field, but that seems a bit too powerful, at least being able to switch jobs.

I'd think that we'd be able to switch gear that's relative to our current job, but I'm not sure about entire job switching in the field.

If the game allows youto change your job when not in combat mode, you can just disengage and change your job during battle when in party, this also will create a fashion where people will all change job to use the strongest ability/magic, and quick disengage to change their class to a tank so as not to die which i dont think creates a fair game as everybody will have to train/change gladiator as main defend job whenever they gets too much hate form the monster so that they will not get much damage from it? This will really make gladiator as a indispensable job.

Even there may or may not have delay in beta right now, it might change when the full game is release as one of the interview, SE mention something like teleporting in alpha/beta for free because that is to save time travel for people in alpha/beta as the server may not be up most of the time so that more testing can be done when server is available to everybody. So i assume most delays were kept short to make testing of alpha/beta to be more efficient and when the game is fully release, they may or may not add back the delays in game.

I believe you can change class in the field, as long as you aren't in active mode. The only question for me is how much space will you have for gear; ie, how many class changes can you carry with you? I'd guess only one or two changes would be necessary.

i think maybe mobs might have status effects that limit job switching, something like a sleep spell, preventing you from switching classes until a certain time period has passed.

I wonder if disengaging will be so easy? or like in WoW, are you "stuck" in combat until you run really far away? Then that strategy wouldn't be an option...

So does the wielding of a weapon control which job is active? So if you pick up a melee weapon, will all your mage armor drop?

Therefore we mention about possible delay that you might need before you can change your class, which is something quite similiar in ffxi system. Maybe you have to be idle for 30seconds before you can do a class change or some sorts of similar delay, but nothing is final for now, anything can be change till the final product is out.

The cooldown they were talking about is reallocating points. You can switch between active/passive mode by pressing a button. Active is weapon out, Passive is relaxed mode. HP is replenished at a faster rate in passive mode. There are no job specific armor, but armors require a certain rank in order to equip them.

If there is no job specific armor, wouldn't that just encourage people to just get the armor with the best defense and then equip that regardless of what their class is? I personally liked how FFXI had their armor set up. Certain classes could equip certain types of armor. Unless, armor really doesn't add anything to the character except an aesthetic appeal. That, of course, would be very silly. Perhaps the class specific part hasn't been added to the beta yet or just not announced?

This is from the FFXIV wiki on Zam:
Quote:

On the FFXIV Web site, the functionality of the system is illustrated through a fictional character named Leeroy. Here's what happens during a day in the life of Leeroy:

  • Leeroy decides to try his hand in swordplay, choosing the discipline of the Gladiator. He goes outside to fight wildlife on the edge of his town's borders.
  • Then some friends come and invite Leeroy to party with them in some nearby ruins. The party already has several accomplished warriors and mages, so Leeroy sheathes his sword and equips his staff, assuming the role of Thaumaturge, his most advanced class. He then joins his friend, fitting in with the party seamlessly.
  • After the ruins party, Leeroy is following the river back to town when he suddenly feels the urge to fish. He puts away his staff and pulls out his fishing rod, taking on the skills and abilities of a Fisherman.
  • When he finally gets back to town, Leeroy equips a hammer to take on the abilities of a blacksmith. Using his skills he goes to work sharpening his blade and pounding the dents out from his armor. All in a day's work!

From the first two points, we can see that players are allowed to change job in the field, but that doesn't necessarily mean one can change job "during a fight". I think there're certain restrictions may apply to changing your job, such as stats change and/or armor change.

We all know that FFXIV lets players to be able to redistribute their stats point freely, however, there maybe a cool down time in between. Since we have no infomation about that, I'm gonna take a wild guess. Let's say we can redistribute our stats points without any cool down when we're in our Mog house, so in that way, we can switch to any job anytime. When we're in the field, we can also redistribute our stats points (hopefully we can also set our stats point as macro, so even when we change job in the field, we don't have to spend too much time redistributing our points) with a cool down, so we can still change our job while we're in the field, but not as 'freely' as we're in town.

As for armor, I'm guessing we can change it anytime when we're not in active mode. So as long as we carry different sets of armors, then we can change it anytime.
