A few questions about jobs & skillsFollow

Firstly, will there be sub jobs like in FF XI?
The skill system has confused me a bit...

Can any class use a skill from any other class? So, for example. As a Gladiator I gain a certain skill, then I can switch jobs to Archer and still use this skill, as long as my archer is an equal or higher level?

But if I switch to a different disciple, then the effect will be reduced?

And, you can only have so many active skills at any time? Like guildwars where you have 8 (I think) on the action bar, or is that not the case for this game?

Do skills become more effective by using them? I think it was like that in FF XI, where your white magic skill would increase as you used it more. But then what would happen if my active job was a Thaumaturge but I was using a Conjurer spell? Which skills would see an increase?

How do you actually gain skills? Do you inherit them at a certain level like WoW, or do you unlock them by putting skill points in to certain stats? Or something different?

What would happen if I switched to a pick axe to do some mining and I got attacked? Could I still use offensive spells/attacks but they'd have reduced effectiveness?

Hope someone can help. Thanks.

All this is hearsay of course, but from what I've read, here are my best guesses!

1./2. yes, but if you equip skills from outside your disciple (war, magic, hand, land) it will weaken for two reasons: one, it may go from AoE to single target and reduce in range or some similar effect for being equipped outside of it's discipline, and two, you won't have equipment on that boosts that ability like a +magic staff or +dmg sword so a "dressed" person of that class will always do better. but if you need a self-cure in a pinch it should do.

3. Yes, from what we hear the higher your physical level the more "slots" you have to carry around abilities. Each ability "costs" a certain number of AP points to "equip." Your current class rank determines your overall AP budget I think. So if you have 3 slots but only 6 AP in a class you can equip three 0 AP abilities, two three-point abilities and a zero, three two-point ones, ect. Rearranging your abilities bar will likely be easy, just not to be done in combat.

4. I don't think so, but using any skill levels both your current rank (class) and your physical level. Your physical level increases base stats like HP, STR, MAG... (I have no idea what the actual stats are) so increasing your magic stat would probably raise damage. I think you only gain ranks in the current class equipped regardless of where the skill your using came from as well. A lancer with cure, is still a lancer.

5. No idea, quests? natural progression? books? I got nothing.

6. Yes, if you have your miner skill bar set up with some offensive abilities you can, as long as they don't require that class's weapon I guess. I hear miners for example get to throw rocks really well, so the gatherers probably have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Cool, that's really helpful. Thanks. Seems like a weird system to get used to. To get the most out of it, people will have to level a few different jobs to get the best abilities. I couldn't decide which magic user I wanted to be, but I'll probably end up having to level both of them.

Anyone got further information about any of this? I had a look around and couldn't find much.

I never played the Alpha nor the Beta, so I'm answering your questions based on the information I gathered from the official sites and the related forums.

As for skills, there are two type of skills, one is ability and one is weapon skill. You can equip abilities from other classes but you can only use the weapon skills from the weapon you're holding. So for example, if you have learned Steal (Pugilist's ability) from Pugilist, you can equip this ability even when you're a Lancer. But if you learned Jarring Strike (Pugilist's weapon skill), you can ONLY use this weapon skill when you're holding a fist weapon.

As far as equipping abilities, in addition to Tweezle120's post, I've read that the cost of AP of each ability is different when you're in different class. For example, when you're using a fist weapon, you're a Pugilist, and the Steal ability may cost you 1AP to equip. But if you change your weaon to a spear, you're now switched a Lancer, then the Steal ability may cost you 3AP to equip.

When using a weapon skill, it'll increase the class level. But when you're using an ability (either from your current class or other classes), it won't increase the class level. From my understanding, leveling a class level is different than leveling up the weapon level in XI. In XI, you can level up your weapon level during a battle. But in XIV, you'll get exp AFTER the battle for your class level.

Gotta love a Hacksaw Jim Duggan reference...make a Hyur character and jack the eyes up to be crossed...I'd love to randomly see that running past me in game...

I'm not sure if you've seen this yet, but this helped clarify and let me in on a lot of new info that I hadn't heard of yet. It was posted in a thread called "A good FFXIV info dump." It was started by our own Tweezle120, so be sure to tell him thank you. http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/283497/Final-Fantasy-XIV-Everything-You-Need-to-Know.html
