Hi all. Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone know for sure if you will be able to type Japanese with the NA version this time? It was the reason I got the JP version of FFXI because the NA version did not support Japanese IME (and because I didn't want to wait :D). Now that you can only get FFXIV for the same region where you have SE account, it would make playing on a JP version all the more difficult.

Thanks for any help! ('∇')ノ

I think I recall for the reasoning behind the NA/EU clients not including the IME had to do something with software licensing? Not positive; could be wrong.

If that's the case though, they probably won't.

I honestly have no idea though; they haven't said anything one way or the other to confirm/deny it.

I have it in my mind that SE said they didn't include a Japanese IME with the US client because Americans don't know Japanese and would just use the characters because they looked cool, and confuse the Japanese players.

Now I know what you're thinking... this is an absurd statement that no reasonable person could make. I think they made it anyway.

I thought the reason XI didn't have an IME was because SE felt we wouldn't have needed it, and simply overlooked the idea that Westerners would actually want to type in Japanese. I doubt it had anything to do with software licensing, we're only talking about a standard input method.

Given the high demand for this feature in XIV, I'm confident it will be implemented so that all regions are able to use it. Very confident.

I've seen screens of NA beta with JP characters therein; my memory may be inaccurate, but I believe I've also seen screens of NA client inputting JP characters.

I reiterate TraumaFox's confidence.

Funny to think that SE billed FFXI as a global community where players from all over the world could truly mingle, yet did not allow non-JP players the means to communicate freely. Auto-translator can only do so much...

Thank you all for your input! I shall ride this wave of confidence and head to Amazon.com.

It starts with W and rhymes with "Bindower".

Well considering they are playing a computer game that requires them to chat, they know Romanji. Now im not sure how well they can read romanji because to me when i try, it just looks like a jumbled mess. im assuming to someone more skilled in japanese... say a native speaker, they would be able to read it just fine.

But nonetheless, they do know romanji so its not like we just cant communicate at all with JP players if SE doesnt offer japanese IME support. Although, when i switched from the JP version to the NA version (when NA was released) i did miss my cool looking macros. NA's got screwed in that respect, lol.

I'm sorry, I wasn't specific enough. I meant FFXIV beta screens, wherein no W - Bindower is necessary (SHOCKING REVELATION, no windower necessary for ffxiv)

Ah, I thought you were referring to XI. If the IME is in the NA beta, then I would hope they carry it into retail.

...even if this does mean endless arguments over the fact that a Manji is not a Swastika.

To native speakers, Romaji in place of kana is hard to read. It'stheequivalentoftryingtoreadasentencelikethis. They can do it, it's just not a preferred method (as proof, see how NPC/enemy names in the JP version of XIV are now in Katakana). After spending many years studying Japanese, I've found kana much easier to read than Romaji for actual Japanese sentences.

^ This.

I shudder to think I might be reduced to conversing with my LS friends in jumbled strings of alphabets; imagine reading English sentences spelled in JP kana.

All you beta testers out there, please demand SE to keep Japanese IME for retail~~! Thank you.

I hope they allow key strokes and letters from different alphabets/symbols to be copied and pasted into the chat screens. I know several players who are from other countries and while it takes longer for me to figure out what they are saying (online translators) and to respond, I know it takes just as long for them in return to chatting with me. We work on it because together we knew how to play well and grouped fantastically. In FFXI many of the auto translates we typed to each other kept going out of context.
