We touched upon this subject in another thread, but I wanted to explore it a bit further.

As I've posted several times, I'm a programmer and I've been looking for a good reason to get into mobile development, specifically iPhone/Android. I'm currently working through some books on iPhone development, but nothing really gets you down and dirty like working on your own project (following examples in books is nice, but they're usually very specialized). Android is not a problem since I'm a fairly experienced Java programmer already; I just need to get a better grasp on the classes and views the Android SDK presents.

What I was wonder is what kind of things would people like to see in an App? I had an idea at one time to create an app for FFXIV that would have crafting recipes, a skillchain calculator, possibly hooks into FFAH, etc. Since I'm not playing FFXI anymore I let that idea drop, but I was thinking about starting a project for a FFXIV app. If I get enough good ideas, I'll start working on something (I would have to wait until after the game was released, I'd rather not rely on beta data). Smiley: smile

Would be cool to have a sort of 'on the go' armoury, something that tracks what you're wearing, how far you've levelled your classes and such.

Not sure how viable this is, but something that tracks LS progress would be cool too (since they're giving websites for them, I presume alot of data will be collected?), I know some apps allow a forum/chat ability too so if you could add that kind of capability, that would be cool too.

Also, something that keeps track of your retainers would be useful.

The best IMO would be viewing LS chat on your phone. Don't know how viable that is but that's my request! :)

If they make that kind of thing available, either consumed as a web service or some how mined from the game files, I could probably do it. The armory might be possible without hooks into the game, but you'd have to update it yourself which makes it loose it luster as an option. I sincerely hope they give us some way of accessing this kind of thing, or even make an app themselves although I would prefer they open up third party access. Allows for creation and innovation.

There's the obvious things, such as what's seen on common FFXI timers (ie. Day/Time in-game, Moon Cycles if applicable). Depending on the in-game economy and how SE implements retainer market searching, possibly something that would hook an inevitable FFXIVAH-like site.

Recipe Database and things such as this would be very helpful, but one has to wonder how applicable/useful this would be to a mobile app? Since FFXIV will not suffer the Alt+Tab issue that FFXI did, game information is an Alt+Tab away for most PC users. PS3 users would benefit (to some degree), provided they aren't within arms reach of their laptop/desktop PC.

Now, actual retainer access would be interesting, if that's something that could somehow be accessed via web (to be determined by SE?). Being able to actually check, and maybe even modify pricing, of your Retainers market would be absurdly useful and great for on the fly market changing without directly accessing your Retainer in-game. Integrating this type of functionality into a mobile app would be very interesting indeed.

Along those same lines, getting alerts when something sells in game would be very cool. The possibilities are only limited by SE and what they will expose, which is hopefully more than what FFXI has.

My ideas of what the mobile app should entail:
1.) A timer, of course, with options to expand to moon, day, ship/ferry/airship (assuming these all return)
2.) A way the user can input their company name (I assume SE will have something like the "beta LS community page) and you can pull latest topics and threads of each company you belong to and have the latest topics shown
3.) A way to see "who else is online" not necessarily on your server, but in your company as well (if the "SE Company Page" supports that...or at the very least who's else has the app and is using it)
4.) PING! Send a message to a user and have it notify their phone ("Hey, I desperately need my armor repaired, can you log on?" or "Reminder.. Event starts in 15 minutes!" or "NM up!! I know you need the item? Can you log on!!"
5.) A search bar for within FFXIV's wiki
6.) Updates from SE
7.) Avatar, hopefully just take a screenie of your character so its visible
8.) FFXIV"Retainer".com or whatever that will become, a quick link to see whats selling,.. whats not... and a mobile friendly version to update your wares, assuming SE is going to make a regular page for that.
9.)Auto Alert of Server Down/UP
10) Integrate Company Calendar to the mobile phone calendar and have all events renamed to Dog sitting for my neighbor, so you appear to have a legitimate excuse for not leaving the house.. ever!!

11.) For PS3 players that would like to "Voice Chat"... is their and API for Ventrilo like communications? Or at least a way that your PC running Vent can stream/send audio from your phone to the computer?

I am working on a webOS (palm pre) app to show the time/date/boat & ship schedules, but don't have access to beta or know anyone with access so right now it is very vague.

Only problem with an armory is what access SE will open to the web.

Some sort of calculator that tells you which abilitys you can use at whatever level you input, ie you input level 4 and it comes up with the abilitys your current class has earned aswell as the abilitys that are available from your other classes. Would help planning your leveling route alittle better i think.

When the crafts come out, how about a list of what can be made with what materials, and possibly a picture of the item. That way if we cant see whats available to us to craft while were on either another character for those who have multiple, or if we cant see if were on another dicipline. would have quick access.

(btw i have an iphone so willing to help you test out any app you make)

A lot of great ideas going on here, however, my first concern is security. If the app can somehow connect to our charactor (check AH or track LS activities), so that means we'll have to input our username and password to the app so it can get our charactor's info from the database, and that's where I think it maybe a problem.

I'm not saying you will hack in anyone's account or something, but what if the phone is stolen or lost?

I'm hoping SE makes a mobile authenticator app like WoW did. That'd be so much better than keeping track of a key ring token.

I expect this is why you don't see more services out there. However, I could see them easily making your one time password a requirement to consuming anything they expose, which would then mitigate that risk because even if you lost the phone, you should still have your security token. Any app I would create would require login that couldn't be saved, it's a pain to have to input your info each time, but safer. Similarly to how my bank's iPhone app works.

Some good ideas there! #1 I've already done a clock for android (see signature), so that's easy! Once the game launches (or hopefully once the information is available in the beta, but I don't want to assume) it'll be easy to add airships and that sort of thing.

I think #5, 6, & 9 would be very feasible even without input on Square's part (and pretty useful). 8 would be great if/when someone decides to do a FFXIAH type site. The rest would probably require Square to provide some data themselves, which while I hope they do that, I doubt it.

#3 & 4... just use google talk or other RL messengers (or, more realistically something like Meebo because everyone uses different ones).

I really hope Square comes out with something like that where you can get an API key from them and get a bunch of data from the game. But for some reason I doubt they will actually do it. All you beta testers should go suggest that. You'd be doing the whole FFXIV community a favor. Do it now!

Yea the Java aspect of Android is pretty straight forward, but if you've never programmed a larger Android app, there is a pretty large number of best practices you need to learn to make the most out of the platform.

I'm a pretty experienced Android dev and if you wanted to team up and make a cross platform XIV app, that would be pretty sweet.

You are probably going to want to be careful with the Apple store until the NDA is lifted. If you published a simple clock and SE took notice you could have your dev license revoked.

I think you would find arguments both ways. I love my iPhone. I heard the Droid-X's are pretty nice. Played with my brothers Droid, didn't care for it. Not sure how may apps the Android app store has, but the iPhone app store has 225,000 apps so far.

Good question. I'm not in the beta either. My friend who allowed me to see the game so I could make the clock is breaking the NDA by doing so, but he shall remain anonymous. The way I see it is:

1. The point of the NDA is basically to stop negative information from coming out before the game is finished, so they wouldn't mind just having a simple clock application out there.

2. As it is not hurting their business, or using their intellectual property, and I am just a fan who is not making money off of the application, they probably won't sic their lawyers on me. It's bad PR. Therefore, the worst they will probably do is contact me and ask me to take it down. If ask me to, I will do so.

So I figured, why not?

Depends which carrier you're on. If you're on anywhere but AT&T, go with any android phone really and you won't regret it. If you're on AT&T, the iPhone is nice, but go in and play with all the phones to see which one you prefer. Even Blackberry phones have their advantages. It's really more about which phone is right for you, as opposed to which phone is best.

As for apps, iPhone store has more apps than the android market right now, but I think that gap is closing rather quickly and probably isn't significant enough to influence a decision either way. Most major apps that a lot of people use are on both.

Wow, I didn't know my little clock was a killer app for android phones :D

Wint is planning on porting the application to the iPhone for me, so it will be on both at some point. The only issue is that iPhone apps have to be reviewed by Apple beforehand, which is what we were discussing. I'd imagine once the game ships, they'd allow it.

lol Did not say it was killer, it may be, I really don't know. But it is definitely interesting. And if it is an indication that the apps for the game would be going that way then it would influence my decision. But if it and the others you guys are collaborating on will be available on iPhone then I guess I will go that way. I think it is great that you guys are doing this.

Thanks so much.
