Kinda weird seeing it from the other side.

Yeah there were a lot of really cool names the JP players would use. One guy was named "Earth" and another was named "Guitar." They seemed completely out of context; but I think that might be specific to Japan as evidenced by the aftermarket Honda parts maker "Spoon." Or Japanese seat company "Bride."

And my favorite, the Taru named "Disneyparade"

At first I was very 8| faced but now I've gotten used to the idea. Only problem I have with it is I have no freaking idea what to make my last name (And really, right now, my first name as well.)
I'll figure something out eventually though, and hopefully I'll love both names :)

Hate it for the 100+ Sephiroths I'm going to have to see everyday.

If you get the real name, cool man that's great.

I've never heard the phrase, "If I had my druthers..." but now I'm thinking "druthers" makes a pretty good last name..

Fiona Druthers, Aberes Druthers, Darby Druthers, Augustine Druthers...

If you can't think of a good second name, pick ANY OLD THING, and even if you hate it at first, write it on a paper and tape it to your monitor, look at it every day. When you get "used" to it, you'll be able to view it with a more objective eye.

Personally I LOVE this system as now me and my friends can all be family!

Well you can always pick a different server, given that they didn't take the name you wanted on the server you wanted.

Quote:

Go for it. As for "druthers," I think it's an aging American slang word that's falling into disuse. "If I had my druthers" simply means "if I had my choice." I assume it comes from a southern dialect as that's where I picked it up, and I can easily imagine the word "druther" being a bastardization of "rather" in that context.

And your advice about writing down your name is good advice. Personally I spent a couple of hours mulling over mine, and changed it several times in the process. Now I think I've settled on one I like, and it's much more satisfying knowing that it will be "mine" and I won't have to compete with anyone for it.

Just think of it as another customization trait given by our dear SE.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I thought it had to do with the food chain, but apparently you're right; it's a shortening of "would rather".

I really like the idea of surnames. It's going to allow my group of friends to be "related" in-game. We figure that we're going to use the street name we grew up on. However, if at the last minute that doesn't work I completely have a back-up plan that I love! (so much so that I kinda hope our "plan" fails) I'm also completely terrified that since I can't play till March (PS3) it'll be taken already.

I LOVE this system. I have used the name Lomelindi in every game, forum and silly contribution to the internet for years. . . but there are times when I join something and Lomelindi is taken :E (case in point, ZAM. Someone who I think never posts is named Lomelindi ; ; so I chose some other nerdy J.R.Tolkien word.)

Aside from having no fear that I can definitely be Lomelindi, it's nice to know that my fiance can share the same surname. It may seem silly, but I enjoy the small things. ^^'

I tend to always be in favor of creativity and lack of restraint in terms of choices. I'd rather be hard-pressed to think of a last name than an entirely new name.

David Rappolla. I feel like I need a 70s mustache and shades 24/7 with a name like that.

Could be worse though. I could have grown up here. First time I saw that street name, I busted out laughing.

(EDIT: Link fail; fixed)

Sidenote, there are only two Rappolla Streets in the US. Pretty sure anyone who wants to can figure out which one is mine. Yup, that's where I grew up. Right between a highway and my Elementary school. Moved out after 5th grade.

You now know a little more about Mikhalia. Can I watch your cats now?

Is it time to derail the thread and post your favorite names from FFXI? Too late!

My favorite: legolasmyeggolas

I would see him waiting for an airship or toting along a charmed kraken and yell to my wife, "Look! There he is again!"

On Topic: I just can't decide, since I can't come up with a fitting surname for my favorite game name. Does seem like it will clutter up the screen a bit more than necessary. Option to turn Floating Surnames off?

Surely more people will get the name they want, kind of, and server migration will be less likely to cause a name change.

Side note: In order to change my character's name in FFXI, I created a character with the same name on another server, and then migrated the original there. (I only had to do this because I had lost the name by going to join friends on another server.) Worked like a charm, but will more than likely be unnecessary in FFXIV because of surnames.

Love it. Yes some people will make silly names, but they will do that even without surenames. I usually end up using a silly name because the last 20 names I tried are already taken by people who likely don't even play anymore or "reserved" it for an alt they never decided to play. I end up being forced to think of something silly (often also taken) or string some random letters together and attempt to make them sound ok, which isn't very pleasing often.

This solves the huge naming issues many mmo's have, and with the addition to nicknames its even better sine people who use weird or complicated names you can just cut down what you have to type shorter.

I may be confused or others are but...

I have noticed a few times people saying that they are excited their friends/wives can have the same surname (last name).

It was posted at the beginning that first names are not Unique, and the surnames ARE. Is this correct?

If so, seems some people got confused.

Not sure how I feel about it though, as most names I use in games, make no sense to be a last name. Wonder why they didn't make first names unique and last names not unique. Makes it easier.

And before people say "well, then not everyone could have the name John if they wanted" Well, if you have the name John, you won't be known as John, but you will by your last name, so the first name is moot.

It almost amuses me that FFXIV should require a first and last name, mostly because my (character) name itself is made up of the characters' first and last name (a character in a book I'm writing), so for me it's reverting to the original state.

Anyhow, I can understand the plight that many have - I remember days long ago when RPGs would ask you to name the character and not give you a default should you not have a clue/care. The name you chose would last you the duration of your fictional adventure (well apart from using rename cards in FFVI) so it was somewhat important to get something you liked. (Worse still if some one should catch you playing said game and laugh at your chosen moniker.)

So, perhaps a solution or a suggestion of the sort. Providing that the game doesn't ever refer to you by surname (which it might well do), you could just add a title or suffix.
For example, as someone said earlier you could have your first name being Lord, Duke, Wanderer, etc and then your original chosen name as your surname.
However should the game introduce titles for you for feats performed etc then this might get awkward. Same if they continually referred to you by your given name. (Duke, this Duke that...)
So on to the next suggestion, a name suffix.
For example, your original name followed by "The-Third" (Or just "Third", "III").
Using this pattern, it is easy for you to just be called by whatever you were going to be called originally and it not look too out of place. Speaking of places you could be "Of-somewhere" instead. i.e. Kreisash of-Midgar.

It's not ideal perhaps, but for those stressing over this surname thing it is a way out which hopefully won't be too bizarre.

neither the surname or the first name have to be unique, just the combination of the two must be unique. In this way, married couples can share the same surname given their first names are different.

I love it - I've got a name picked out already - it was fun to pick two names instead of one - and the chances of the combination being taken are astronomically low with a system like this. I only wish there would be an in-game way of changing your last name so that people could signify their alliance to each other in a family or clan-like structure - that would be cool.

After finding some screen shots online it appears that your surname appears inline with your first name? I was hoping it would be underneath so it wasn't so spammy long. Can anyone confirm if it is possible to use all caps for your surename, or is that covered by the NDA still? Hoping I can add roman numberals to my prefered name because I can't think of a good last name.

<name> XIV ... or something like that
<name> Xiv ... is no good in my opinion

I really like it. Adding a proper name gives your character way more personality. I've always used forum usernames in MMO's past (incidentally, similar to what someone wrote earlier here, my normal username 'Cyaneyed' was taken here). I have a friend who is using a name from his novel, he's ecstatic that he'll be able to use it.

I've chosen my name already, seriously loving the fact I can play an MMO as Norris Cole.

However I do hope there's an option to block people on the chat, because the person who takes 'Allakhazam' and the ensuing 'joke' spam will be extremely irritating (seriously, I had a rather long block list in Aion for this reason and I only played that for a month).

Edit - I love the fact that the annoying name is censored here.

Probably quite a Few, im sure SE will gave that blocked as a first name. If not.. as long as peopel remember the rules, Main one being GM's Will never ask for User name and passwords. should be okay.. Hmm this might be a good thing to put into the feedback forum, to block GM [GM] {GM} or any variation of.
