IDK if this is dumb but i have to ask,
ok from what I understand changing your weapon/tool will change your class, and this can be done at any point except in combat. My question is what happens when you get aggro in the field crafting or farming mats?
How do the non-combat classes defend them selves?

I assume they'll have options other than "roll over and die" (although I always put that button too close to the others)

Could be they have some basic combat abilities, like clocking things on the head with a pickaxe or throwing a rock at someone... whatever.

Could also be that it's possible and advisable to just switch weapons and become a combat class, deal with the bad guy, and switch back.

I can already see myself, all happy picking herb in the field and having a notorious monster mess up my day.

Well, it's been talked about that you can equip abilities from other classes you have ranked up. So perhaps you can equip attack skills on a Gatherer/crafter class.

edit: my sig is messed and I took it away ;p

Step 1: If you are a career crafter/gatherer, allocate all your stat points towards defense as you level up.

Step 2: Only craft and gather in areas within your skill-level.

Step 3: Run-away if an aggroing mob pops near you.

Step 3a: If you followed steps 1 & 2 and a mob starts unexpectedly attacking you, you should be able to survive a few hits, and possibly still get away.

Step 4: If you no matter what need to craft/gather in some extremely dangerous area, hire some players as a security escort?

Step 4a: Have a high-level class which can solo the problem mobs in the dangerous area. Switch to said high level class to clear-out your gathering area, before proceeding to gather.

Step 5: Hope S-E adds some basic combat/defense abilities specifically for crafters/gatherers.

Step 5a: Hope S-E allows you to equip some basic combat/defense abilities from other classes on crafters/gatherers.

Step 6: Don't worry about such things, which may be non-issue on release day.

Step 6a: If this is an issue on release day, people will likely complain vocally, and S-E will hopefully respond with a patch to improve the situation.

lol, yeah, that is probably what will happen, unless there is some major show-stopper which causes high-level gathering to become near-impossible.

Since S-E has presented crafting and gathering classes as a viable lifetime profession in FFXIV, they have likely already tested the entire level progression. If there is a problem, there will also likely be a solution in-game to allow you to adapt.

I am assuming that you may be able to switch from crafting class to combat class, even during combat. Just not in the reverse order. It would make sense to me, and would work pretty well.

How about the reverse?

Can you equip any gathering skills/abilities when you're a combat class?
Meaning you can hapilly roam the land fighting and gathering.

I would assume though that the most logical thing to do is run away. Perhaps some gathering classes have abilities which help them escape or hide?

OR... now this might take some getting used to here... we duo/party up and take it in turns to gather while the rest hunt. Didn't they mention that some non combat classes have combat sort of abilities or party buffs? (Rock throw or something?)

Archer would be perfect to level then, quickstride & chameleon look like the best bets for the coward method. That would be cool if the craft classes have some abilities to help their fighting or run away on top of that.

I remember reading somewhere that it would be beneficial for Combat and crafter to team-up in the field. Since the area's are phased though when you take guildleve craft quest it might not have any agro mobs out there. Also since they areas aren't instance you might find someone to help you in the field. If anything it would be like FFXI when you were HELM in an area where everything was IT.

They meant beneficial as in, some crafting classes most likely have Treasure Hunter type of skills. Increased odds of certain types of items to drop.

I'm still interested in what "non-combat classes" like DoH and DoL can bring to a party that would result in DoW/DoM inviting them to a group, or whether DoH/DoL will group independently from DoW/DoM.

I heard miner gets the ability to throw rocks at mobs, perhaps it stuns them so you can run?

and yeah, I'd likely level up archer 1st so I get their stealth sneaking and traps, then equip those abilities as a gatherer so I'm more survivable in the field.

I'm not a big fan of the show "The Mighty Boosh", but they had a demon character, jokingly, which kinda fits into the non-combat class.

Quote:
"Nanatoo
A seemingly sweet old woman who is, in fact, the most evil demon known to the Shaman; she has a five star rating in Spotlight for Demons. She kills a lad with the edge of a bus pass and Saboo by tying him up in a rapidly-knitted scarf, before skewering him with knitting needles."
