Has anyone figured out what jobs will be for a tank? In FFXI I was a 75 Galka Paladin. Also, I don't get the jobs, Like if you pick archer, you cant craft? It looks very confusing. Can anyone help me out with these 2 questions? Thanks!!

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking with your first question, but you can switch between any craft/magic/melee class. There is no limitation on that. Ie. you can play as an archer, then decide you want to take a break, so take out your handsaw and do some carpentry. Then break out a scepter and level your Thaumaturge. Simple as that.

People keep posting threads like this despite having seen it explained like 50 times...

Anyhow, the job system is very simple. At the moment all jobs can tank to an extent, it's only beta though and the amount of content is extremely restricted and prone to change at any time so we really don't know the exact details of every job yet.

About crafting jobs and job changes in general. No, an archer cannot craft, but all you have to do to craft is equip a different weapon (one suitable for a craft job). You can change jobs pretty much whenever you want and all you have to do is switch weapons and your job changes to whatever job the weapon is associated with.

No muss, no fuss.

A: None, it's working as intended.

Also consider the possibility that NO job is dedicated to tanking.

SE's been a big fan of putting stuff out there and seeing what the community does with it. See FFXI's ninja job, they weren't designed to tank, and in-fact SE tried to discourage the practice, but they were so good at it they eventually just gave in and started helping

From the information we have now, Gladiator seems like the closest tank job we have, since they're holding a 1h weapon and a shield, I would imagine they can wear plate for armor.

As for as how the "jobs" work in FFXIV, they don't have a specific "jobs" anymore, they have names in general, and it despends on what kind of weapons you're using. If you're using a 1h sword and a sword, you're Gladiator automatically, when you level up your "class rank", you'll learn Gladiator's abilities and weapon skills. If then you loot a bow and some arrows from a monster, and you decided to equip them, then you will become an Archer instantly, when you level up your "class rank", you'll learn Archer's ability and weapon skill. So if walked by a mining spot right after you killed the next mob with your bow and arrow and you would like to mine, you can simply equip a mining tool, and now you're a miner. In terms of armor, I'm not sure how exactly it'll be, like if you're wearing plate as a Gladiator, then when you switched your weapon to bow and arrows, then what would happen to your plate armors? Chances are, the armors would taken down and put in your bag as soon as you switch your weapon, so if you don't have a set of armor that suitable for Archer in your bag, you'll probably be running around naked?!

I've heard that Gladiator's shield usage is very potent, preventing quite a lot of damage.

Pugilist also seems to have some mitigation and / or avoidance potential; then again, so did MNK.

I suppose it would seem confusing if you haven't been glued to the internet for any information about FFXIV since it was first announced like many of us that frequent here.

Here's my crack at answering your question. I know others have attempted but they don't really do it to my satisfaction (though, admittedly I didn't read all of the posts).

Tanks, while all classes (they are called classes now, not jobs) have tanking abilities (though, I haven't seen any on the lancer that screams tank) really the gladiator and pugilist have been pushed in various interviews as the main tanks. Gladiator obviously having the sword and board combo and the pugilist apparently having a "stance" that makes it tank worthy.

As for your other question. You can change classes at will just by changing your weapon. Thus, if you are an archer and want to craft you simply change your bow and arrow to a hammer or whatever crafting tool and then craft to your hearts content.
