Choosing the right cityFollow

I was just wondering if you choose the city that goes with your race like Galka>Bastok Taru>Windy and whatnot if you will get a certain item like the rings in XI? I think it would be a good idea to add this in XIV because every bit of gear helps out in the beginning and it can be an incentive to make your character in its home city. Anybody else have some good opinions or ideas? Please share!

I've thought about that and that's kinda what I'm doing if I play the hellsguard roegadyn I'm leaning towards. The site suggests they're near Ul'dah so I'd probably start there, also because the weaver's & thaumaturge guilds are there, 2 things that interest me. Seems like Ul'dah for Hellsguard and Limsa Lominsa for Sea Wolves are obvious, but with some of the other race/clans it's not very clear what the suggested starting area would be. That makes me think there won't be such rings.

Or maybe there are, but it's not about picking the "correct" starting city. Maybe you get one from whatever city you choose. Seems odd to kind of penalize people for not starting in the correct city when there isn't a clear-cut city to start in.

Yea when i started FFXI I made a Windy Galka and didnt get the ring and id see people with a badass ring (for a lowbie) and asked where they got it and most didnt know they said they just started with it and by the time i finally figured out how to get it, it was obsolete anyways. Needless to say...i never got the ring lol. it would be nice if they had gear you can acquire if you choose the right path though so it might possibly make lower lvls easier if you are wise.

I hope that if they do decide to this, they give something to every city not just one. I'm thinking of Limsa Lominsa because of the guilds they have. Hopefully when we get closer to the release they will let us know if this will be done.

The main difference is there are all sorts of races in each city...where before you would only see humes and galkas in bastok, you will now see all races in all locations, so there is more diversity from the start.

That being said I do not think it will be beneficial to player freedom to do something like this. In fact I think it will limit and frustrate some players...why should I, based on my class, race and clan, be excluded from a certain stat bonus if I don't want to chose Limsa Lominsa as my hometown???

Yeah, I was planning to start a Miqo'te in Gridania, but if I knew that I got a bonus for starting in Ul'dah or Limsa Lominsa, I'd change.

You can buy these rings with conquest points.

What ever city i start in will be the right one. WHo ever starts in the other two cities will be the wrong one.

Ul'dah Is wheir i'll be starting the description sounds awsome. Gambling a fighting arena, Ho's ( I added this ) what more could an Elvan ask for. Boats and Ho's...Boats and Ho's

I really liked the rings from FFXI. I thought they added a decent enough incentive to start in the "correct" starter city without making it impossible to start elsewhere. I'd like to see a similar system carried over to XIV, but as has been mentioned, the cities seem a lot more integrated this time around, so I'm not sure if it'd make sense.

Edit to add: The "right" city is going to be whichever one has the most accessible layout (Bastok), not some convoluted maze where everything you need is a 15 minute run away from everything else (Windurst). ****, do I hate Windurst...

This is very true. Only after 3-4 years of time in XI did I finally get Windy down lol. Limsa Lominsa looks very similar, with halls and alleys leading off in different directions....two levels which can only be accessed from certain areas. Why do you do this to us SE?!?!?

I think we better be prepared for all the cities to be like this. FFXI most cities didn't have more then one level and if they did it was only for a couple shops (exception being certain parts of Bastok). Just from the various trailers and concept art alone it seems all cities have more then 1 level to them and some look like they might even have 3-4 levels depending on the location (Those Huge structures in Gridania and multi-tiered walls in Ul'Dah). The main problem Windurst had wasn't the fact it was 'a maze' it was the fact that all the places were so spread out with space that had absolutely nothing but walking distance and little else (The location of the warp NPCs and the Residential Section didn't help much either). From what I have 'heard' about Limsa Lominsa, the maze like structure isn't that bad, its more like a heavily expanded Mhaura from FFXI. Lots of cliffs and levels but there is very few areas that exist without a purpose. Once you get the framework of the cities down it probably won't take you long to figure out shortcuts to and from key parts of the city. Stuff I'm certain will be in the other two cities as well.

LL is manageable at the moment; if you look at the maps, just takes some getting used to. From the screenshots, everything is well labeled. Seamless zones is a major upgrade so that you don't have to deal with the silliness of zoning from Lower to Port Jeuno, e.g.

Not sure there are maps available yet for Uldah and Gridania.
