Ok, so I never got around to playing ffxi. I know, its probably a mortal sin around here. I figured I have my new rig and 2 months to wait so i need something to pass the time. I will be buying, installing, and hopefully playing ffxi tonight. Is there any helpful info that I need to know? A specific server that is better than the other? A better city to start in? Race/class combos that is the "best". Mabey even a helpful LS to look out for? Thanks

Don't throw away beastman's seals. Pressing + while in your inventory will allow you to sort it, there is also an autosort feature in the menus. /c with a monster selected will gauge the monster's difficulty. Avoid anything "Tough", "Very Tough" or "Incredibly tough". Ctrl+H rests to restore HP/MP, at the cost of TP. There should be a quest you can start when you first begin that takes you through more of the basics; don't skip it. There is a book outside of the city gates, click it and start the first entry which will tell you to kill mobs and reward you with bonus XP and points that can be spent on buffs like HP restore (regen) or MP restore (refresh) as well as temporary items and such.

There's a lot more, which there is likely a sticky in the FFXI forum to cover in more detail. I'll shoot these down one at a time though, so you don't have to ask them again:

No.

None are.

Depends on your server; lots of linkshells are helpful. If you just say in your starting city that you're new and ask if anyone will invite you to their linkshell, you'll probably get like 2 or 3 replies. If you like the one you join, stay. If you don't like it, leave. You can be a member of multiple linkshells at a time so joining a new one does not require you to leave an old one.

These combinations will result in a ring when you start:
Elvaan = San d'Oria (DEF, +STR, +MND)
Hume/Galka = Bastok (+HP, +VIT, +DEX)
Mithra/Taru = Windurst (+MP, +AGI, +INT)

...any other combination is fine, but you don't get a ring. For a fee in gil, you an always change nation later (or change back) as many times as you like (and can afford).

Hey you still have 2 months or so to give FFXI a try. You can probably pick up a real cheap copy from Gamestop.

I actually couldn't find one at seven Gamestops, an EBGames and two BestBuys. I was having a craving and had some time to kill. I do believe it's only $10 to download it from Gamestop.com, though.

It was $5 on Steam last week. Dunno if it still is, but that was a 50% off sale. So $10 for all expansions sans Abyssea (which you won't have a need for really within 2 months time) is an awesome deal. Wish I got that deal, but I had to go buy a $15 copy of the Xbox compilation in my attempt to get cheaper expansions. Doh.

I saw that Steam & Fileplanet are selling download versions for $9.99. Still not a bad deal IMHO. I wish I can go back to my old FFXI account, but I lost the box and manual during a move across the country. Their customer service refused to help me. One detail was off during the questioning so they said they couldn't help me. All that invested time down the drain. But I might just download and play the old one for kicks.

Then again, I wonder if it's even possible to find a Dune team. Just how many new leveling players are in the game now?

I played for the first 6 months after NA release. I came back a few years later, and had a lot of trouble finding parties for 40+ PLD. NIN tanks were preferred at the time.... I only stayed on for that month and ended up turning it off because I spent too much time waiting around for parties. It didn't seem worth it to me. Leveling BST was fun for awhile though.

Levels 40 through about the mid 50s were always a problem after a while in XI. It was a sharp drop off due to people stopping at 37 who were only leveling sub jobs. Compounded by the fact that SE never really added any extra EXP camps when they raised the level cap from 50, so it's a slower exp range too thus tougher to get people to go through it just to help out. Now-a-days people just sync to 38ish and do East Ronfarue (S) until they're near enough to 55 to do birds.

Oh, man...how I wish I was this guy. To walk into FFXI for the first time again.

Advice. Yes. I've got advice. Pick whatever floats your boat, but when you enter the first town be sure to speak to all NPC's you can and spend some time getting to know the town. Explore. Take your time. I know this sounds like common knowledge...yeah, it's common knowledge. Just enjoy yourself.

You are about to walk into a wonderful world. You'll do well. Just be yourself. I'm sorry, I'm sugar-coating it...it's a tough journey, but you'll make friends along the path that'll make it...well, it'll be something you'll want to tell us about later.

And I wait to hear your stories.

You can sell the crystals and random loot at the AH (auction house). Don't sell them to NPC shops (almost always better deals at the AH).

Save all your seals. They are useless to you right now, but later you can use them to enter "special battles." You'll find out later. :)

If you're going to play FFXI on a new machine, you'll need this:

http://vnboards.ign.com/ffxi_general_board/b22412/60198299/p1/

It's a link to a forum post about tweaking FFXI's graphics (the link has executables that will modify the registry for you, as well as how to manually adjust the registry).

FFXI for PC graphics were limited by the PS2 version of the game (I don't know why, don't ask). SOME people can tolerate them. This tweak allows you to tighten up the graphics, which in turn actually makes the game look pretty good [dated, but still good]

This ticks me off about the service. I did not have all my information as well, and I had to basically raise **** to get them to turn back on my account, then at the end in a snide remark he stated that they hope my character was not deleted. I was like WTF! my account was still in the system, so why would they delete the info attached to it. In the six years I had and was billed for the game I went through 3 credit cards attached to the account. They would expire and one was stolen. Not only did they want the 3 numbers on each as well as the expiration and the CVS number (security number) I had to list what server I was on, Characters name, POL account, Date of purchase and location, as well as have another card to attach the account to even though the one I planed to use was in good standing I was required to register 2 cards total. Needless to say I was ******* I refused to give them my CVS numbers on the outdated cards under common sense. If they already have the information and all I needed to do to verify it why give them full access to older accounts. Not to mention when I switched the second card I had listed was for it being stolen I had no way to get the CVS. Also since the billing name did not match the card name (the cards cut off 4 letters of my name for being to long) he had to again get another approval from his boss.

The funny thing, I play WoW, never had this many issues, even when all my friends are being hacked and reps ruined. While FFXI was secure, they played it to close to the rule book. All in all though, my character was intact and even items were still in my mail box after a year. Alas my plants had withered and died, lazy moogle.
