Does anyone remember when the guide for FFXI was released? Was it available on the PC release day?

The reason I ask is I started FFXI on the PS2 NA release so the guide was already out and although it was laughable in some ways it did have some useful information in it and at the very least was a GREAT bathroom read (I still have mine in my upstairs bathroom) and I ask because unlike FFXI both Japanese and American players will start on the same day this time so will the guide be released on the 22nd or the 30th or weeks after or before the 22nd and the 30th?

A Brady guide would be extremely useful. Read it, then do the exact opposite of what it tells you :)

I hate to sound boastfull...no, that's a lie, I'm totally going to boast about how the Zam community is going to help create a better guide than anyone else.

Because we're the Fonz of FF. In fact, they'll probably have to rename it to "Final Fonzasy".

Now that's not really fair, when that guide was released it was actually fairly decent. I have a lot of memories of reading the class descriptions and abilities OVER AND OVER trying to decide what job to level, and then following the guild as I leveled up to remind me when to upgrade spells, etc.

It got SO much use that it disintegrated, and I had to lay my hands on a 2nd on [which was a pain, as they had been out of print for awhile @ that point]

Sure, as the expansions rolled on they didn't update it, and forums gradually replaced it. . but I still have a lot of fond memories of that guide, and I can still lay my hands on it right now [it's in my desk drawer].

A new guide would be nice, though tbh I'm not sure if I'd use it now that forums are as developed as they are.

within probably 2 weeks of release, every class forum will probably have a guide of at least 1-10 (probably 1-20) explaining everything that will be beneficial for each class. Personally, a guide would be useful for like the first 2-3 days, but after that would lose its luster for me. I'd REALLY like to see it come out maybe a week or so before the CE release. Then I'd just read it cover to cover and it would be very helpful.

This is why I'm Pre-Ordering the CE. To be thrown into the complete unknown. Guideless.

Really you wanna buy a $20 guide to help you decide what job you want to level... I would think you allready know what each job does, and if your looking for the "overpowered job" thats just silly too, "nerf". Not to mention you can switch to any job in FF XIV.... sooo ya a guide would be more useless then ever. Now if it came out before the 22nd I would probably buy it, but if it comes out on the 22nd or later then its complete garbage because I would certainly rather play the game then spend hours looking for a bit of usefull info in the guide.

I dunno, I kinda like guides, even though I tend to rely more on the internet and wikis for many games. At the same time, having a paperback with maps and lists of items is pretty spiffy to read when I'm not at home and can't use a laptop or desktop.

No guide on the SKU lists at Gamestop yet. Personally, I was really disappointed with the guide for FFXI, I like tables in my guide, an in-depth explanation of certain variables that need to be tracked out by hand otherwise. THERE WAS NO GARDENING SECTION! I was pretty let down there.

I remember buying the Guide for FFXI, but as it was my first MMO, I figured it would be useful. Since a MMO is dynamic, alot of the info in a guide quickly becomes outdated. I also remember that same guide I bought for FFXI, quickly became less useful as I started using info from forums such as here.

A guide is good for having a hard copy of some info close at hand. But all the stuff I "need" to know, will be the little details, the obscure. All the basic gameplay stuff, I will learn on my own in due time.

You missed my point. I said that it was handy for me, back in the day [when i was young, and the game specific internet forums were still in their relative infancy]. My copy holds a reasonable amount of sentimental value, and I can MAYBE see picking up a strat guide for XIV if I have an extra $20 and I'm feeling whimsical.

See, the great thing about a strategy guide is, it doesn't whine about how every job is Overpowered, or how the new patches are nerfing it. It doesn't complain constantly about how this job or that class should be played. it doesn't sit there and insult anyone for being creative, thinking outside the box, or trying to develop strategies or plans of actions for the coming days/weeks/months. It doesn't require you to log off [or download unauthorized windowers] in order to reference it, and you can even look at it when your internet inevitably goes down for service/power goes out. . w/e.

Will it end up becoming outdated? Sure ^^. Will it hold sentimental value after it's usefulness has passed? ABSOLUTELY. Will I rely solely on it, even as it becomes obsolete? Of course not. But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it anyway :)

I'm sure there will be a guide on release day, but it may not be as useful as the guide for FFXI was, because FFXI was out for over a year in Japan before the worldwide PC release. Hence, there was a lot more information to cover. Considering that FFXIV is going live with only 7 combat classes and no one has had a chance to adventure beyond the starting areas in a single starting city, not all that much is known. It's hard to create an authoritative guide for content that you can't actually experience.
